Fast fluorescence dynamics in non-ratiometric calcium indicators
A fluorescence decay of high-affinity non-ratiometric Ca2+ indicator Oregon
Green BAPTA-1 (OGB-1) is analyzed with unprecedented temporal resolution in the
two-photon excitation regime. A triple exponential decay is shown to best fit
the fluorescence dynamics of OGB-1. We provide a new model for accurate
measurements of the free Ca2+ concentration and dissociation constants of
non-ratiometric calcium indicators.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, figures revised, added chi-square goodness of fi
Static solutions from the point of view of comparison geometry
We analyze (the harmonic map representation of) static solutions of the
Einstein Equations in dimension three from the point of view of comparison
geometry. We find simple monotonic quantities capturing sharply the influence
of the Lapse function on the focussing of geodesics. This allows, in
particular, a sharp estimation of the Laplacian of the distance function to a
given (hyper)-surface. We apply the technique to asymptotically flat solutions
with regular and connected horizons and, after a detailed analysis of the
distance function to the horizon, we recover the Penrose inequality and the
uniqueness of the Schwarzschild solution. The proof of this last result does
not require proving conformal flatness at any intermediate step.Comment: 41 page
Gains from the upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX at the BER-II reactor
The upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX is described.
We discuss the characterisation of the gains from the new primary spectrometer,
including a larger guide and double focussing monochromator, and present
measurements of the energy and momentum resolution and of the neutron flux of
the instrument. We found an order of magnitude gain in intensity (at the cost
of coarser momentum resolution), and that the incoherent elastic energy widths
are measurably narrower than before the upgrade. The much improved count rate
should allow the use of smaller single crystals samples and thus enable the
upgraded FLEXX spectrometer to continue making leading edge measurements.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 5 table
Deterministic quantum teleportation between distant atomic objects
Quantum teleportation is a key ingredient of quantum networks and a building
block for quantum computation. Teleportation between distant material objects
using light as the quantum information carrier has been a particularly exciting
goal. Here we demonstrate a new element of the quantum teleportation landscape,
the deterministic continuous variable (cv) teleportation between distant
material objects. The objects are macroscopic atomic ensembles at room
temperature. Entanglement required for teleportation is distributed by light
propagating from one ensemble to the other. Quantum states encoded in a
collective spin state of one ensemble are teleported onto another ensemble
using this entanglement and homodyne measurements on light. By implementing
process tomography, we demonstrate that the experimental fidelity of the
quantum teleportation is higher than that achievable by any classical process.
Furthermore, we demonstrate the benefits of deterministic teleportation by
teleporting a dynamically changing sequence of spin states from one distant
object onto another
An Ultra-Stable Referenced Interrogation System in the Deep Ultraviolet for a Mercury Optical Lattice Clock
We have developed an ultra-stable source in the deep ultraviolet, suitable to
fulfill the interrogation requirements of a future fully-operational lattice
clock based on neutral mercury. At the core of the system is a Fabry-P\'erot
cavity which is highly impervious to temperature and vibrational perturbations.
The mirror substrate is made of fused silica in order to exploit the
comparatively low thermal noise limits associated with this material. By
stabilizing the frequency of a 1062.6 nm Yb-doped fiber laser to the cavity,
and including an additional link to LNE-SYRTE's fountain primary frequency
standards via an optical frequency comb, we produce a signal which is both
stable at the 1E-15 level in fractional terms and referenced to primary
frequency standards. The signal is subsequently amplified and frequency-doubled
twice to produce several milliwatts of interrogation signal at 265.6 nm in the
deep ultraviolet.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
A delta Scuti distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present results from a well studied delta Scuti star discovered in the
LMC. The absolute magnitude of the variable was determined from the PL relation
for Galactic delta Scuti stars and from the theoretical modeling of the
observed B,V,I light curves. The two methods give distance moduli for the LMC
of 18.46+-0.19 and 18.48+-0.15, respectively, for a consistent value of the
stellar reddening of E(B-V)=0.08+-0.02. We have also analyzed 24 delta Scuti
candidates discovered in the OGLE II survey of the LMC, and 7 variables
identified in the open cluster LW 55 and in the galaxy disk by Kaluzny et al.
(2003, 2006). We find that the LMC delta Scuti stars define a PL relation whose
slope is very similar to that defined by the Galactic delta Scuti variables,
and yield a distance modulus for the LMC of 18.50+-0.22 mag. We compare the
results obtained from the delta Scuti variables with those derived from the LMC
RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids. Within the observational uncertainties, the three
groups of pulsating stars yield very similar distance moduli. These moduli are
all consistent with the "long" astronomical distance scale for the Large
Magellanic Cloud.Comment: Accepted for publication on A
