Influence of Cure Temperature and Degree of Surface Treatment on Transverse Cracking and Fibre/Matrix Bond Strength in CFRP.
In the scheme of a EURAM-Programme, fibre/matrix bonding in CFRP was investigated as a function of the level of fibre surface treatment and cure temperature. The fibre/matrix bond strength was determined with the aid of a new technique based on transverse cracking in 0/904/0 laminates. A model taken from the literature, which describes transverse cracking as influenced by defects, matrix ductility and constraining effect, is applied to explain the effect of surface treatment in relation to the defect distribution and the bond strength. Further, it is shown that the surface treatment most effectively increases the bond strength if a high cure temperature (190°C) is chosen. </jats:p
