Optimising Four-Wave Mixing in Ultralong SOAs

Abstract-The numerical modelling of four-wave mixing in ultralong semiconductor optical amplifiers (UL-SOAs) is discussed. Inside the UL-SOA, complex wave mixing interactions take place so that time-domain modelling is an important requirement for the simulation model. We validate our simulations by comparison with measurements and show that the confinement factor is a crucial parameter for the device optimisation with regard to the generation of broad FWM combs

Penalties From 2D Grating Coupler Induced Polarization Crosstalk in Silicon Photonic Coherent Transceivers

Silicon photonic two-dimensional grating couplers for C- and O-band dual-polarization coherent transceivers are analyzed with respect to their polarization splitting/combining performance. Due to scattered light in the grating's plane, a linear cross-polarization results. The latter is responsible for a limited polarization split ratio and a polarizations' non-orthogonality. The impact of these two quantities is evaluated by system-level simulations with regard to OSNR penalties in coherent systems. For both C- and O-band, a design modification for reduced penalties is proposed

Cross-polarization effects in sheared 2D grating couplers in a photonic BiCMOS technology

We investigate numerically and experimentally sheared 2D grating couplers in a photonic BiCMOS technology with a focus on their splitting behavior. Two realization forms of a waveguide-to-grating shear angle are considered. The cross-polarization used as a figure-of-merit is shown to be strongly dependent on the grating perturbation strength and is a crucial limitation not only for the grating splitting performance, but also for its coupling efficiency.Comment: This is a preprint version of an article accepted for publication in Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. Kontexte des Wohlbefindens von Kindern und Jugendlichen: Integrierende Stadtentwicklung mit dem kommunalen kleinräumigen Monitoring-Instrument UWE

Dieser Beitrag stellt Ergebnisse einer Pilotstudie vor, die ein Monitoring-Instrument des Wohlbefindens von Kindern und Jugendlichen für die kommunale Dauerbeobachtung und als Evaluationsinstrument entwickelte. Integrierende Stadtentwicklung steht vor der Herausforderung, negative Folgen von residentieller Segregation und Bildungssegregation für die Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen abzufedern. Zugleich mangelt es Städten an systematisch verfügbaren kleinräumigen Daten über Kinder und Jugendliche im Sekundarstufenalter. Das Instrument setzt am Humanvermögen als gesellschaftsintegrativem Potenzial an und fragt, wie Wohlbefinden von spezifischen Ressourcen und sozialräumlichen Kontexten beeinflusst wird, in denen sich für die Entwicklung prägende Interaktionen abspielen: Familie, Schule, Wohnumgebung. Die gleichzeitige Untersuchung verschiedener sozialräumlicher Kontexte erlaubt differenzierte Interventionsmöglichkeiten, die ressourcenspezifisch eingesetzt werden können.This article presents results of a pilot-study, which developed a monitoring-instrument for measuring wellbeing of children and young people in a municipal permanent observation and as evaluation tool. Integrated urban development faces the challenge to absorb negative consequences at the development of children by residential and educational segregation. At the same time, in cities there is a lack of systematic available small-scale data about children in the middle years. The instrument uses human resources as necessary potential for society and measures areas of children's development strongly linked to well-being and the influence by the socio-spatial contexts: family, school and living environment. Low threshold monocrystalline Nd:(Gd,Lu)₂O₃ channel waveguide laser

We report the first waveguide laser based on a rare-earth-doped sesquioxide. A 2 μm thick lattice matched Nd(0.5%):${(Gd, Lu)_2O_3}$ film with a nearly atomically flat surface has been epitaxially grown on a $Y_2O_3$ substrate, using pulsed laser deposition. The film has been structured with reactive ion etching and a rib channel waveguide laser has been realized. Laser radiation at 1075 nm and 1079 nm has been observed under 820-nm pumping. The laser possesses a threshold power of about 0.8 mW and a preliminary slope efficiency of 0.5% versus incident pump power. A maximum output power of 1.8 mW has been obtained for 370 mW incident pump power

Dieser Beitrag stellt Ergebnisse einer Pilotstudie vor, die ein Instrument für die kommunale Dauerbeobachtung und Evaluation des Wohlbefindens von Kindern und Jugendlichen entwickelt. Integrierende Stadtentwicklung steht vor der Herausforderung, negative Folgen von sozialräumlicher Segregation und Bildungssegregation für die Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen abzufedern. Zugleich mangelt es Städten an systematisch verfügbaren kleinräumigen Daten über Kinder und Jugendliche im Sekundarstufenalter. Das Instrument setzt am Humanvermögen als gesellschaftsintegratives Potenzial an und fragt, wie Wohlbefinden von spezifischen Ressourcen und sozialräumlichen Kontexten beeinflusst wird, in denen sich für die kindliche Entwicklung prägende Interaktionen abspielen: Familie, Schule, Wohnumgebung. Die Befragung wurde im nordrhein-westfälischen Herne durchgeführt. Die Verteilung des Wohlbefindens zeigt deutliches Potenzial für Verbesserungen. Wohlbefinden wird maßgeblich durch vier situative Ressourcen bedingt: regelmäßige Ernährung und ausreichend Schlaf, positive Schulerfahrungen im Sinne des respektvollen, unterstützenden Umgangs an der Schule und dem Ausbleiben von Mobbing, starke Beziehungen zu Erwachsenen in Familie, Schule und Nachbarschaft sowie starke Beziehungen zu Gleichaltrigen. Organisierte Freizeitaktivitäten als fünfte untersuchte Ressource korrelieren nicht mit Wohlbefinden. Die Anzahl Erwachsener zu Hause zeigt einen Effekt des Familienkontexts an, weil das Wohlbefinden der Kinder aus Ein-Erwachsenen-Familien signifikant niedriger ist. Ferner gibt es kleinere Unterschiede zwischen den Schultypen, wobei Gesamtschulen das höchste durchschnittliche Wohlbefinden aufweisen. Schließlich gibt es keine systematischen Unterschiede zwischen den Sozialräumen, die als statistische Bezirke gemessen wurden.This article presents results of a pilot study, which developed an instrument for measuring well-being of children and young people in a municipal permanent observation and as evaluation tool. Integrated urban development faces the challenge to absorb negative consequences at the development of children by socio-spatial segregation and educational segregation. At the same time, cities lack of systematically available small-scale data about children in the middle years. The instrument uses human resources as necessary potential for society and measures areas of children's development strongly linked to well-being and the influence by the socio-spatial contexts: family, school and living environment. The survey was conducted at schools in Herne, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The distribution of well-being shows clear potential for improvement. Well-being is mainly due to four situational assets: nutrition and sleep, positive school experiences, adult relationships at school, at home and in the living environment and peer relationships. After-school activities as a fifth resource do not correlate with well-being. The number of adults at home shows an effect on the family context, because the well-being of children with single parents is significantly reduced. There are differences between school types. The well-being is higher in comprehensive schools. There are no systematic differences on the level of social areas (measured as statistical districts)

Perspectives of Long-Haul WDM Transmission Systems Based on Phase-Insensitive Fiber-Optic Parametric Amplifiers

Kerr nonlinearity mitigation in 5 × 28-GBd PDM 16-QAM signal transmission over a dispersion-uncompensated link with backward-pumped distributed Raman amplification

International audienceWe present experimental and numerical investigations of Kerr nonlinearity compensation in a 400-km standard single-mode fiber link with distributed Raman amplification with backward pumping. A dual-pump polarization-independent fiber-based optical parametric amplifier is used for mid-link spectral inversion of 5 × 28-GBd polarization-multiplexed 16-QAM signals. Signal quality factor (Q-factor) improvements of 1.1 dB and 0.8 dB were obtained in the cases of a single-channel and a five-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system, respectively. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations with good agreement. It is also shown with simulations that a maximum transmission reach of 2400 km enabled by the optical phase conjugator is possible for the WDM signal
