    The Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership Approach to the Adoption of New Beef Industry Technologies

    Technology adoption in the Australian beef industry has been low and slow compared to the intensive livestock and cropping industries. The principles of accelerated adoption provide an innovative solution to this problem. In the Beef CRC, Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership (BPP) members will meet regularly to measure their current performance, set targets for future productivity increases, and use a profitability framework to assess the potential impact of new technology. Capacity building and partnership outcomes will also be assessed. The BPP teams will be supported with appropriate tools and resources.     Third-order nonlinear optical properties of bismuth-borate glasses measured by conventional and thermally managed eclipse Z scan

    Third-order nonlinearity one order of magnitude larger than silica is measured in bismuth-borate glasses presenting a fast response (<200 fs). The results for the sign and magnitude of the nonlinearity were obtained using a combination of the eclipse Z scan with thermal nonlinearity managed Z scan, whereas the Kerr shutter technique was employed to obtain the electronic time response of the nonlinearity, all performed with 76 MHz repetition rate 150 fs pulses at 800 nm. Conventional Z scans in the picosecond regime at 532 and 1064 nm were also independently performed, yielding the values of the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities at those wavelengths. The results obtained for the femtosecond response, enhanced third-order nonlinearity of this glass (with respect to silica), place this glass system as an important tool in the development of photonics devices.     Evaluation of the efficacy of commercial disinfectants against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Race 1 and Tropical Race 4 propagules

    Panama disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) has devastated banana production worldwide. This work aimed to determine effective disinfectants against two races of Foc, race 1 and tropical race 4 (TR4), for implementation with on-farm biosecurity procedures against this disease following the outbreak of TR4 in North Queensland in 2015. A total of 32 commercial disinfectants were screened and their activity was assessed after ≤ 30 sec, 5 min, 30 min and 24 hr of contact with a Foc suspension containing 105/ml chlamydospores without and with soil added (0.05 g/ml). Of the disinfectants tested, the quaternary ammonium compounds containing ≥ 10% active ingredient were found to be the most effective against both Foc races. These products, when used at a 1:100 dilution, completely inhibited the survival of all Foc propagules across all the contact times regardless of the absence or presence of soil. The bioflavonoids product EvoTech 213 and bleach (10% sodium hypochlorite) used at a 1:10 dilution also eliminated all Foc propagules across all the contact times. None of the detergent-based or miscellaneous products tested were completely effective against both Foc races even used at a 1:10 dilution. Soil decreases the efficacy of disinfectants and therefore must be removed from contaminated items before treatments are applied

    Geodesic distance for right invariant Sobolev metrics of fractional order on the diffeomorphism group

    We study Sobolev-type metrics of fractional order s0s\geq0 on the group \Diff_c(M) of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a manifold MM. We show that for the important special case M=S1M=S^1 the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(S^1) vanishes if and only if s12s\leq\frac12. For other manifolds we obtain a partial characterization: the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(M) vanishes for M=R×N,s<12M=\R\times N, s<\frac12 and for M=S1×N,s12M=S^1\times N, s\leq\frac12, with NN being a compact Riemannian manifold. On the other hand the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(M) is positive for dim(M)=1,s>12\dim(M)=1, s>\frac12 and dim(M)2,s1\dim(M)\geq2, s\geq1. For M=RnM=\R^n we discuss the geodesic equations for these metrics. For n=1n=1 we obtain some well known PDEs of hydrodynamics: Burgers' equation for s=0s=0, the modified Constantin-Lax-Majda equation for s=12s=\frac 12 and the Camassa-Holm equation for s=1s=1.Comment: 16 pages.     Practitioner compression force variation in mammography : a 6 year study

    The application of breast compression in mammography may be more heavily influenced by the practitioner rather than the client. This could affect image quality and will affect client experience. This study builds on previous research to establish if mammography practitioners vary in the compression force they apply over a six year period. This longitudinal study assessed 3 consecutive analogue screens of 500 clients within one screening centre in the UK. Recorded data included: practitioner code, applied pressure (daN), breast thickness (mm), BI-RADS® density category and breast dose. Exclusion criteria included: previous breast surgery, previous/ongoing assessment, breast implants. 344 met inclusion criteria. Data analysis: assessed variation of compression force (daN) and breast thickness (mm) over 3 sequential screens to determine whether compression force and breast thickness were affected by practitioner variations. Compression force over the 3 screens varied significantly; variation was highly dependent upon the practitioner who performed the mammogram. Significant thickness and compression force differences over the 3 screens were noted for the same client (<0.0001). The amount of compression force applied was highly dependent upon the practitioner. Practitioners fell into one of three practitioner compression groups by their compression force mean values; high (mean 12.6daN), intermediate (mean 8.9daN) and low (mean 6.7daN). For the same client, when the same practitioner performed the 3 screens, maximum compression force variations were low and not significantly different (p>0.31). When practitioners from different compression force groups performed 3 screens, maximum compression force variations were higher and significantly different (p<0.0001). The amount of compression force used is highly dependent upon practitioner rather than client. This has implications for radiation dose, patient experience and image quality consistency

    Using the wave equation as an example, it is shown how to extend the hydrodynamic Lagrangian-picture method of constructing field evolution using a continuum of trajectories to second-order theories. The wave equation is represented through Eulerian-picture models that are distinguished by their Lorentz transformation properties. Introducing the idea of the relativity of the particle label, it is demonstrated how the corresponding trajectory models are compatible with the relativity principle. It is also shown how the Eulerian variational formulation may be obtained by canonical transformation from the Lagrangian picture, and how symmetries in the Lagrangian picture may be used to generate Eulerian conserved charges.Comment: 21 page

    ‘Ethnic group’, the state and the politics of representation

    The assertion, even if only by implication, that ‘ethnic group’ categories represent ‘real’ tangible entities, indeed identities, is commonplace not only in the realms of political and policy discourse but also amongst contemporary social scientists. This paper, following Brubaker (2002), questions this position in a number of key respects: of these three issues will dominate the discussion that follows. First, there is an interrogation of the proposition that those to whom the categories/labels refer constitute sociologically meaningful ‘groups’ as distinct from (mere) human collectivities. Secondly, there is the question of how these categories emerge, i.e. exactly what series of events, negotiations and contestations lie behind their construction and social acceptance. Thirdly, and as a corollary to the latter point, we explore the process of reification that leads to these categories being seen to represent ‘real things in the world’ (ibid.)

    Tune in to your emotions: a robust personalized affective music player

    The emotional power of music is exploited in a personalized affective music player (AMP) that selects music for mood enhancement. A biosignal approach is used to measure listeners’ personal emotional reactions to their own music as input for affective user models. Regression and kernel density estimation are applied to model the physiological changes the music elicits. Using these models, personalized music selections based on an affective goal state can be made. The AMP was validated in real-world trials over the course of several weeks. Results show that our models can cope with noisy situations and handle large inter-individual differences in the music domain. The AMP augments music listening where its techniques enable automated affect guidance. Our approach provides valuable insights for affective computing and user modeling, for which the AMP is a suitable carrier application
