    Get PDF
RAPD techniques were used for the detection of genetic heterogeneticity among the axenic culture of fresh water cyanobacterial isolates. The electrophoretic patterns for 12 cyanobacterial strainsbelonging to 2 genera (8 Oscillatoria strains and 4 Lyngbya strains) were used for molecular analysis using the RAPD technique. A total of 12 cyanobacterial isolates were selected and mass cultured inBG11 medium. Genomic DNA was extracted from fresh water cyanobacterial isolates and was amplified using primers D7, M13, OPC11, OPC12, OPC13, OPC14 and OPC15 and distinct PCR fingerprint were generated. Unique banding patterns were observed from all tested cyanobacterial species and their molecular weights of each band were used to calculate their genetic distance among them. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was carried out for the phylogenetic characterization of these strains. RAPD fingerprinting results clearly showed the genetic variation among the cyanobacterial isolates

Effective Teachers of Multilingual Learners: A Mixed-Method Study of UK and US Critical Sociocultural Teaching Practices

    Get PDF
This convergent parallel mixed-method study (quan + QUAL) relies on systematic classroom observations of mainstream teachers considered highly effective with multilingual learners in the United Kingdom and the United States (N = 9). Using a critical sociocultural theoretical lens, we use an established quantitative observation rubric and lesson field notes to capture real-world teaching practices. Using deductive reasoning to merge closed- and open-ended observation data, we illuminate the features of highly effective teaching for multilingual students. Evidence demonstrates that elements of challenge in activity design and teacher presentation, prioritizing language and literacy development, and modeling, were practices with the highest consistency across countries. At the same time, other features leave room for future growth. Lesson analysis unpacked various ways teachers enact effective teaching based on country context. Despite educational policies that may conflict with strong teaching for multilingual students, linguistically responsive teachers in both countries transcend curricular and testing constraints by intentionally enacting lessons that richly scaffold learning

The present study was aimed to assess the effect of pre-freeze addition of cysteine hydrochloride and glutathione (GSH) on post-thaw sperm functional parameters and field fertility. The experimental bulls aged 4 to 6 years were used for the present study. A total of 36 ejaculates, 6 ejaculates from each bull (n=6) were collected and divided in to three groups, group I (control), group II (5mM cysteine hydrochloride) and group III (5mM GSH). The extended semen samples were added with @5mM additives, filled in mini straw using automatic filling and sealing machine (IMV, France) and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Post-freeze seminal traits were also recorded after thawing at 37oC for 30 seconds. Post thaw livability was significantly (p< 0.01) higher in GSH group as compared to cysteine and control groups. The loss of acrosomal integrity was significantly (p< 0.01) lower in GSH group than cysteine and control groups. Analysis of variance for post thaw motility parameters (Forward progressive and Total motility) has revealed that significant difference (p< 0.05) between the good and poor freezer in the group II and there was no difference in the group I and III under study at 0 and 1 hr incubation period and at 2 hrs the group III and at 4 hrs group I has revealed significance difference (p< 0.05).The curvilinear velocity (VCL) and amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) values were significantly (P<0.05) higher in GSH than the cysteine and control groups. The Mitochondrial membrane potential (per cent) had no significance difference between the treatment groups. The present study indicates that the addition of cysteine and GSH suggestive of reducing lipid peroxide levels. The conception rate (%) in glutathione (68) added semen was significantly (p>0.05) higher than cysteine (58) and control (49) groups. The post-thaw sperm progressive forward motility (r=0.4) had moderate but, no significant correlation with conception rate. However post-thaw VSL (r=0.7), loss of acrosomal integrity (r=-0.8) and mitochondrial membrane potential (r=0.9) had significant (p< 0.05) correlation with field fertility. The present study indicates that the use of glutathione as semen additives may be recommended for improving semen quality and overall augmentation of pregnancy in cows. The present study suggests that pre-freeze addition of glutathione was found to be better than cysteine in improving sperm fertility

Minimization of Eddy-Current Loss in a Permanent-Magnet Tubular Linear Motor

    Get PDF
This paper presents a minimization of eddy-current loss (ECL) in permanent-magnet (PM) of three tubular linear PM motors (TLPMMs). Three-dimensional Finite-Element Analysis has been used for the simulations. The ECL component is usually not taken into consideration in conventional PM motors. In present technologies, ECL is generated inside magnets of PM motors, due to both the high conductivity of the rare-earth magnets and the harmonics of the slot. This loss can increase the temperature inside the magnets and that may deteriorate their magnetic properties and potential risk of thermal demagnetization. Therefore, in the translator, segmented magnets has been used, because the cancelation of the ECL with this technique is possible as illustrated by the FEA results. Meanwhile, for the stator core of the three proposed motors, soft magnetic composite (SMC) material, Somaloy 700 has been used for its low cost and approximately zero ECL

Hospital antimicrobial stewardship program implementation in the Gulf Cooperation Council States: a systematic review of evidence of implementation.

Background and Purpose: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has led to the development of initiatives aimed at optimizing antimicrobial use. Co-ordinated interventions for promoting and monitoring safe and effective use of antimicrobials are termed antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP). While there are several systematic reviews on aspects of ASP, none have focused on the processes and outcomes of implementation in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States. The aim was to critically appraise, synthesize and present the available evidence on ASP implementation in the GCC States in relation to the interventions, reported outcomes and facilitators and barriers to implementation. Methodology: A systematic review protocol was developed based on PRISMA-P guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews). Electronic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Cochrane database and Web of Science) were searched using pre-specified terms for peer-reviewed publications in English from 2010 onward. Quality assessment, data extraction and synthesis were independently performed by two reviewers. ASP interventions were compared to the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) checklist, a systematic assessment of key ASP interventions. Results and Discussions: ASP interventions implementation in line with CDC checklist were weak, with the majority of studies reporting only one third of the expected CDC criteria. The most commonly reported outcomes were antibiotic consumption, with very little reporting of any microbiological, clinical and economic outcomes. Key facilitators were physician and organisation support. Barriers reported included the lack of dedicated staff and lack of sufficient funding for implementation. Conclusions: There is a lack of robust studies of ASP implementation in the GCC States. Such studies should focus on CDC criteria in developing the ASP intervention and report valid and reliable outcomes including microbiological, clinical and economic outcomes. There is also a need for qualitative research to focus on facilitators, barriers and solutions to implementation

A study to assess the effectiveness of play material on the level of anxiety among hospitalized children (9-12 yrs) in pediatric medical ward at Institute of Child Health and Research Centre, Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai OBJECTIVES: 1. To evaluate the effectiveness of play material in terms of reducing anxiety among hospitalized children (9-12Yrs). DESIGN: True experimental study was used to evaluate the effectiveness of play material in terms of reducing anxiety among hospitalized children (9-12yrs) in pediatric medical ward at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. The tool used for this study consists of demographic data and modified standardized pediatric anxiety rating scale. The populations of this study were 60 children (experimental-30, control-30) in the age group of 9-12 years admitted in pediatric medical ward who undergone treatment and other diagnostic procedure. Samples for the study were selected through simple random sampling technique. Conceptual frame work used for this study was King’s open system (1981) model. RESULTS: The findings of the present study revealed that the computed post-test "t" value in over all area was highly significant (t = 13.83, P < 0.05, df = 29). The mean and S.D value(mean=3.66, S.D=1.16) of post-test was lower than the pre-test value (mean=17.86, S.D=5.11). This shows that there was highly significant reduction of anxiety level after getting play intervention. In experimental group post-test anxiety level was not associated with the demographic variable. CONCLUSION: Play therapy was found to be very effective diversional technique to reduce the anxiety level as well as stressors of childhood hospitalization in hospitalized children, but it needs more practice and follow as a routine diversional technique in the ward for better hospitalization without any psychological responses of hospitalization (anxiety, depression)

Robust Face Recognition Using Enhanced Local Binary Pattern

    Get PDF
Face recognition is an emerging research area in recognition of the people. A novel feature extraction technique was introduced for robust face recognition. Enhanced Local binary pattern (EnLBP) divided the image into sub regions. For each sub region, the salient features are extracted by obtaining the mean value of each sub region. In LBP, each pixel was replaced by applying LBP into each sub region. In this paper, the mean value of sub region was replaced for the sub region. It reduced the dimension of the image and extracts the salient information on each sub region. The extracted features are compared with similarity measures to recognize the person. EnLBP reduces the operation time and computational complexity of the system. The experimental results were carried out in the standard benchmark database LFW-a. The proposed system achieved a higher recognition rate than other local descriptors
