    25 years of tillage effects on wheat production in a continuous cropping system

    Non-Peer ReviewedHeat stress occurs often in wheat on the Canadian Prairies especially during grain growth (from anthesis to maturity), which has a markedly negative impact on yield (McCaig 1997). Under no-till management (NT), surface residue and stubble act as insulation and impede the exchange rate of thermal energy between the soil and the atmosphere, and the superior soil moisture of NT compared to conventional tillage (CT) can buffer the extremes in daily soil temperatures. It is, therefore, possible that the cooling effect of NT could alleviate the root heat stress of wheat. Under a continuous wheat cropping system on a Thin Black Chernozemic clay loam in central Alberta, Wang et al (2007) found that the near-surface soil temperature of NT was lower than that of CT throughout the growing season, which reduced the risk of root heat stress and benefited grain yield and biomass.     Structure of even-even nuclei using a mapped collective Hamiltonian and the D1S Gogny interaction

    A systematic study of low energy nuclear structure at normal deformation is carried out using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory extended by the Generator Coordinate Method and mapped onto a 5-dimensional collective quadrupole Hamiltonian. Results obtained with the Gogny D1S interaction are presented from dripline to dripline for even-even nuclei with proton numbers Z=10 to Z=110 and neutron numbers N less than 200. The properties calculated for the ground states are their charge radii, 2-particle separation energies, correlation energies, and the intrinsic quadrupole shape parameters. For the excited spectroscopy, the observables calculated are the excitation energies and quadrupole as well as monopole transition matrix elements. We examine in this work the yrast levels up to J=6, the lowest excited 0^+ states, and the two next yrare 2^+ states. The theory is applicable to more than 90% of the nuclei which have tabulated measurements.     The Logical Intelligence Enhancement Program (LIEP) is a program specifically addressed to students aging from 6 to 12. It consists of a series of exercises of different types (verbal inferences, understanding of graphs and tables, series of digits, etc.) and increasing difficulty, properly devised to activate and train the abilities of logical reasoning. Hopefully, such an enhancement should result in an improvement of academic achievements, especially in low proficiency learner students. Here we report on a study carried out on a large cohort of fifth-grade students. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of LIEP in improving students’ cognitive abilities and abstract reasoning

    Linear Responses in Time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Method with Gogny Interaction

    A numerical method to integrate the time-dependent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations with Gogny interaction is proposed. The feasibility of the TDHFB code is illustrated by the conservation of the energy, particle numbers, and center-of-mass in the small amplitude vibrations of oxygen 20. The TDHFB code is applied to the isoscalar quadrupole and/or isovector dipole vibrations in the linear (small amplitude) region in oxygen isotopes (masses A = 18,20,22 and 24), titanium isotopes (A = 44,50,52 and 54), neon isotope (A = 26), and magnesium isotopes (A = 24 and 34). The isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole strength functions are calculated from the expectation values of the isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

    An Exact Chiral Amorphous Spin Liquid

    Topological insulator phases of non-interacting particles have been generalized from periodic crystals to amorphous lattices, which raises the question whether topologically ordered quantum many-body phases may similarly exist in amorphous systems? Here we construct a soluble chiral amorphous quantum spin liquid by extending the Kitaev honeycomb model to random lattices with fixed coordination number three. The model retains its exact solubility but the presence of plaquettes with an odd number of sides leads to a spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry. We unearth a rich phase diagram displaying Abelian as well as a non-Abelian quantum spin liquid phases with a remarkably simple ground state flux pattern. Furthermore, we show that the system undergoes a finite-temperature phase transition to a conducting thermal metal state and discuss possible experimental realisations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Protocol for studying cough frequency in people with pulmonary tuberculosis.

    INTRODUCTION: Cough is a key symptom of tuberculosis (TB) as well as the main cause of transmission. However, a recent literature review found that cough frequency (number of coughs per hour) in patients with TB has only been studied once, in 1969. The main aim of this study is to describe cough frequency patterns before and after the start of TB treatment and to determine baseline factors that affect cough frequency in these patients. Secondarily, we will evaluate the correlation between cough frequency and TB microbiological resolution. METHODS: This study will select participants with culture confirmed TB from 2 tertiary hospitals in Lima, Peru. We estimated that a sample size of 107 patients was sufficient to detect clinically significant changes in cough frequency. Participants will initially be evaluated through questionnaires, radiology, microscopic observation drug susceptibility broth TB-culture, auramine smear microscopy and cough recordings. This cohort will be followed for the initial 60 days of anti-TB treatment, and throughout the study several microbiological samples as well as 24 h recordings will be collected. We will describe the variability of cough episodes and determine its association with baseline laboratory parameters of pulmonary TB. In addition, we will analyse the reduction of cough frequency in predicting TB cure, adjusted for potential confounders. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval has been obtained from the ethics committees at each participating hospital in Lima, Peru, Asociación Benéfica PRISMA in Lima, Peru, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. We aim to publish and disseminate our findings in peer-reviewed journals. We also expect to create and maintain an online repository for TB cough sounds as well as the statistical analysis employed

    Characterization of oil sands naphthenic acids by negative-ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry : influence of acidic versus basic transfer solvent

    Considerable effort and progress has been made over the past decade with respect to development of analytical tools for the determination of naphthenic acids and related components in environmental samples. However, experimental variables that influence the analytical results have not been fully explored. The relative contributions of Ox classes are of particular interest in data obtained using negative-ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Using two types of ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometers (Orbitrap and FT-ICR), the apparent pH of the transfer solvent was observed to have a significant impact upon compound class distributions. A basic transfer solvent favored the detection of Ox species of lower oxygen content, while acidic pH favored the preferential observation of organic compounds with higher oxygen contents. These observed trends were independent of the instrument type. In addition, when using an acidic transfer solvent, the overall observed response was reduced by a factor of ∼20. Thus, the apparent pH of the transfer solvent has critical influence upon detection and upon the profile of different components observed within a complex mixture. In turn, this significantly impacts oil sands environmental monitoring for toxicity, forensic interpretation, and quantitation; when comparing data sets from different laboratories, these findings should therefore be taken into account
