Self-Organizing Maps and Parton Distributions Functions
We present a new method to extract parton distribution functions from high
energy experimental data based on a specific type of neural networks, the
Self-Organizing Maps. We illustrate the features of our new procedure that are
particularly useful for an anaysis directed at extracting generalized parton
distributions from data. We show quantitative results of our initial analysis

Tracking Users across the Web via TLS Session Resumption
User tracking on the Internet can come in various forms, e.g., via cookies or
by fingerprinting web browsers. A technique that got less attention so far is
user tracking based on TLS and specifically based on the TLS session resumption
mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first that investigate the
applicability of TLS session resumption for user tracking. For that, we
evaluated the configuration of 48 popular browsers and one million of the most
popular websites. Moreover, we present a so-called prolongation attack, which
allows extending the tracking period beyond the lifetime of the session
resumption mechanism. To show that under the observed browser configurations
tracking via TLS session resumptions is feasible, we also looked into DNS data
to understand the longest consecutive tracking period for a user by a
particular website. Our results indicate that with the standard setting of the
session resumption lifetime in many current browsers, the average user can be
tracked for up to eight days. With a session resumption lifetime of seven days,
as recommended upper limit in the draft for TLS version 1.3, 65% of all users
in our dataset can be tracked permanently.Comment: 11 page
Post- and peritraumatic stress in disaster survivors: An explorative study about the influence of individual and event characteristics across different types of disasters
Background:
Examination of existing research on posttraumatic adjustment after disasters suggests that survivors’ posttraumatic stress levels might be better understood by investigating the influence of the characteristics of the event experienced on how people thought and felt, during the event as well as afterwards.
Objective:
To compare survivors’ perceived post- and peritraumatic emotional and cognitive reactions across different types of disasters. Additionally, to investigate individual and event characteristics.
Design:
In a European multi-centre study, 102 survivors of different disasters terror attack, flood, fire and collapse of a building were interviewed about their responses during the event. Survivors’ perceived posttraumatic stress levels were assessed with the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). Peritraumatic emotional stress and risk perception were rated retrospectively. Influences of individual characteristics, such as socio-demographic data, and event characteristics, such as time and exposure factors, on post- and peritraumatic outcomes were analyzed.
Results:
Levels of reported post- and peritraumatic outcomes differed significantly between types of disasters. Type of disaster was a significant predictor of all three outcome variables but the factors gender, education, time since event, injuries and fatalities were only significant for certain outcomes.
Conclusion:
Results support the hypothesis that there are differences in perceived post- and peritraumatic emotional and cognitive reactions after experiencing different types of disasters. However, it should be noted that these findings were not only explained by the type of disaster itself but also by individual and event characteristics. As the study followed an explorative approach, further research paths are discussed to better understand the relationships between variables

and more complex class of soft matrix elements, including generalized parton

The importance of XY anisotropy in Sr2IrO4 revealed by magnetic critical scattering experiments
The magnetic critical scattering in SrIrO has been characterized
using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) both below and above the 3D
antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, T. The order parameter
critical exponent below T is found to be \beta=0.195(4), in the
range of the 2D XYh universality class. Over an extended temperature range
above T, the amplitude and correlation length of the intrinsic
critical fluctuations are well described by the 2D Heisenberg model with XY
anisotropy. This contrasts with an earlier study of the critical scattering
over a more limited range of temperature which found agreement with the theory
of the isotropic 2D Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet, developed to describe
the critical fluctuations of the conventional Mott insulator LaCuO and
related systems. Our study therefore establishes the importance of XY
anisotropy in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of SrIrO, the
prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulator.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Intracellular pathways involved in bone regeneration triggered by recombinant silk-silica chimeras
Biomineralization at the organic-inorganic interface is critical to many biology material functions in vitro and in vivo. Recombinant silk-silica fusion peptides are organic-inorganic hybrid material systems that can be effectively used to study and control biologically-mediated mineralization due to the genetic basis of sequence control. However, to date, the mechanisms by which these functionalized silk-silica proteins trigger the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) to osteoblasts remain unknown. To address this challenge, we analyzed silk-silica surfaces for silica-hMSC receptor binding and activation, and the intracellular pathways involved in the induction of osteogenesis on these bioengineered biomaterials. The induction of gene expression of αVβ3 integrin, all three Mitogen-activated Protein Kinsases (MAPKs) as well as c-Jun, Runt-related Transcription Factor 2 (Runx2) and osteoblast marker genes was demonstrated upon growth of the hMSCs on the silk-silica materials. This induction of key markers of osteogenesis correlated with the content of silica on the materials. Moreover, computational simulations were performed for silk/silica-integrin binding which showed activation of αVβ3 integrin in contact with silica. This integrated computational and experimental approach provides insight into interactions that regulate osteogenesis towards more efficient biomaterial designs

‘I will not be thrown out of the country because I’m an immigrant’: Eastern European migrants’ responses to hate crime in a semi-rural context in the wake of Brexit
This article examines Eastern European migrants’ experiences of and responses to hate crime. Following the UK European Union Membership Referendum (‘Brexit’ vote), there was an increase in reported hate crimes against immigrants. The study focuses on the experiences of migrants in Lincolnshire, a region of England which has a significant migrant population, and which had one of the highest ‘leave’ votes. The focus on white migrants in this semi-rural setting offers an original perspective in the field of hate crime studies. We draw on semi-structured interviews and observations to identify temporal, spatial, and relational factors in responses to hate crime. We uncover the insecure occupation of a ‘third space’ constituted by material, discursive, and emotional practices. This positioning was destabilised post referendum; but there was also evidence of the operation of agency within processes of ‘othering’, suggesting a transition from victim identity to emergent political subject
Multi-filament structures in relativistic self-focusing
A simple model is derived to prove the multi-filament structure of
relativistic self-focusing with ultra-intense lasers. Exact analytical
solutions describing the transverse structure of waveguide channels with
electron cavitation, for which both the relativistic and ponderomotive
