Enhanced reverse saturable absorption and optical limiting in heavy-atom-substituted phthalocyanines
The reverse saturable absorption and the optical-limiting response of metal phthalocyanines can be enhanced by use of the heavy-atom effect. Phthalocyanines containing heavy-metal atoms, such as In, Sn, and Pb, show a nearly factor-of-2 enhancement in the ratio of effective excited-state to ground-state absorption cross sections compared with those containing lighter atoms, such as Al and Si. In an f/8 optical geometry, homogeneous solutions of heavy-metal phthalocyanines, at 30% linear transmission, limit 8-ns 532-nm laser pulses to ≤ 3 µJ the energy for 50% probability of eye damage) for incident energies as high as 800 µJ
Training Deer to Avoid Sites Through Negative Reinforcement
Deer frequently visit areas where they may cause damage. Incidents along roadways and runways inflict numerous injuries to animals and humans, and cause considerable economic losses. Concerns are increasing that deer interactions with domestic animals may contribute to spread of disease. Deer foraging in residential areas, agricultural fields, or plant propagation sites can impede growth and possibly survival of desirable plants. We conducted a series of trials to determine whether mild electric shock would induce place avoidance in deer. Shock was delivered through a device attached to a collar. A noise cue was emitted as an animal approached a defined area if the animal failed to retreat a shock followed. Deer learned to avoid areas associated with shock. We concluded that place avoidance induced through negative reinforcement may be a feasible means to protect valuable resources from resident animals. However, the technological limitations of tested devices, costs to implement, and required training for individual deer reduced the practicality of this approach for highly mobile animals and as a means to protect resources with low economic significance
Feasibility of non-lethal approaches to protect riparian plants from foraging beavers in North America
Beavers in North America will occupy almost any wetland area containing available forage. Wetland restoration projects often provide the resources necessary for dispersing beavers to create desirable habitats. Their wide distribution and ability to disperse considerable distances almost assure that beavers will establish themselves in new wetlands. Although beavers are a natural and desirable component of a wetland ecosystem, their foraging behaviors can be destructive. Fencing may be a feasible approach to reduce damage to small, targeted areas, and textural repellents may provide some utility to protect established trees. However, these non-lethal approaches will be marginally effective when beaver populations become excessive. Beaver populations need to be maintained at levels that permit viable colonies while still permitting plant communities to flourish. This will require a better understanding of beaver movements, site and forage selection, and reproductive characteristics. This is particularly true when management objectives and regulations prohibit beaver removal from project sites
The impact of induction chemotherapy on the outcome of second-line therapy with pemetrexed or docetaxel in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer
Background: Using data from a large phase III study of previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that showed similar efficacy for pemetrexed and docetaxel, this retrospective analysis evaluates the impact of first-line chemotherapy on the outcome of second-line chemotherapy. Patients and methods: In all, 571 patients with advanced NSCLC were randomly assigned to receive pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 or docetaxel 75 mg/m2 on day 1 of a 21-day cycle. Comparisons were made based on type of first-line therapy [gemcitabine + platinum (GP), taxane + platinum (TP), or other therapies (OT)], response to initial therapy, time since initial therapy, and clinical characteristics. The two second-line treatment groups were pooled for this analysis due to similar efficacy and were assumed to have no interaction with the first-line therapies. Results: Baseline characteristics were generally balanced. By multivariate analysis, gender, stage at diagnosis, performance status (PS), and best response to first-line therapy significantly influenced overall survival (OS). Additional factors by univariate analysis, histology, and time elapsed from first- to second-line therapy significantly influenced OS. Conclusions: Future trials in the second-line setting should stratify patients by gender, stage at diagnosis, PS, and best response to first-line therap
Analysis of motion during the breast clamping phase of mammography
Objectives: To measure paddle motion during the clamping phase of a breast phantom
for a range of machine/paddle combinations.
Methods: A deformable breast phantom was used to simulate a female breast. Twelve
mammography machines from three manufacturers with twenty two flexible and twenty
fixed paddles were evaluated. Vertical motion at the paddle was measured using two
calibrated linear potentiometers. For each paddle, the motion in millimeters was
recorded every 0.5 seconds for 40 seconds while the phantom was compressed with
80 N. Independent t-tests were used to determine differences in paddle motion
between flexible and fixed, small and large, GE Senographe Essential and Hologic
Selenia Dimensions paddles. Paddle tilt in the medial-lateral plane for each
machine/paddle combination was calculated.
Results: All machine/paddle combinations demonstrate highest levels of motion during
the first 10s of the clamping phase. Least motion is 0.17±0.05 mm/10s (n=20) and the
most is 0.51±0.15 mm/10s (n=80). There is a statistical difference in paddle motion
between fixed and flexible (p<0.001), GE Senographe Essential and Hologic Selenia
Dimensions paddles (p<0.001). Paddle tilt in the medial-lateral plane is independent of
time and varied from 0.04° to 0.69°.
Conclusions: All machine/paddle combinations exhibited motion and tilting and the
extent varied with machine and paddle sizes and types.
Advances in knowledge: This research suggests that image blurring will likely be
clinically insignificant 4 seconds or more after the clamping phase commences
Extra patient movement during mammographic imaging : an experimental study
Objectives: To determine if movement external to the patient occurring during mammography may be a source of image blur. Methods: Four mammography machines with seven flexible and nine fixed paddles were evaluated. In the first stage, movement at the paddle was measured mechanically using two calibrated linear potentiometers. A deformable breast phantom was used to mimic a female breast. For each paddle, the movement in millimeters and change in compression force in Newton was recorded at 0.5 and 1 second intervals respectively for 40 seconds with the phantom in an initially compressed state under a load of 80N. In the second stage, clinical audit on 28 females was conducted on one mammography machine with the 18x24cm and 24x29cm flexible paddles. Results: Movement at the paddle followed an exponential decay with a settling period of approximately 40 seconds. The compression force readings for both fixed and flexible paddles decreased exponentially with time while fixed paddles have a larger drop in compression force than flexible paddles. There is a linear relationship between movement at the paddle and change in compression force. Conclusions: Movement measured at the paddle during an exposure can be represented by a second order system. The amount of extra-patient movement during the actual exposure can be estimated using the linear relationship between movement at the paddle and the change in compression force. Advances in knowledge: This research provides a possible explanation to mammography image blurring caused by extra patient movement and proposes a theoretical model to analyze the movement

Galectin-9 Is a Possible Promoter of Immunopathology in Rheumatoid Arthritis by Activation of Peptidyl Arginine Deiminase 4 (PAD-4) in Granulocytes
The aetiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is unknown, but citrullination of proteins is thought to be an initiating event. In addition, it is increasingly evident that the lung can be a potential site for the generation of autoimmune triggers before the development of joint disease. Here, we identified that serum levels of galectin-9 (Gal-9), a pleiotropic immunomodulatory protein, are elevated in RA patients, and are even further increased in patients with comorbid bronchiectasis, a lung disease caused by chronic inflammation. The serum concentrations of Gal-9 correlate with C-reactive protein levels and DAS-28 score. Gal-9 activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (granulocytes) in vitro, which was characterized by increased cytokine secretion, migration, and survival. Further, granulocytes treated with Gal-9 upregulated expression of peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD-4), a key enzyme required for RA-associated citrullination of proteins. Correspondingly, treatment with Gal-9 triggered citrullination of intracellular granulocyte proteins that are known contributors to RA pathogenesis (i.e., myeloperoxidase, alpha-enolase, MMP-9, lactoferrin). In conclusion, this study identifies for the first time an immunomodulatory protein, Gal-9, that triggers activation of granulocytes leading to increased PAD-4 expression and generation of citrullinated autoantigens.
