This session will provide an overview of available online platforms and phone apps that can be used to engage students in physics labs. The topics include Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Waves and Sound. A variety of freely available materials including lesson plans will be shared with participants. These resources can be used in the virtual learning environment, and can be incorporated as a form of alternative assessment during regular face-to-face instruction. Participants need to install a free phone app ‘Phyphox’ for this session

This project is meant for a high school physics course where the students have studied Newton\u27s Universal Law of Gravitation, Newton\u27s Second law, and free fall motion. The students construct their own parachute, record a video in LoggerPro of the parachute in motion, and analyze the data to calculate the drag coefficient of their parachute

Educating and Debating Social and Political Issues in the Naperville Lyceum

This historical research responds to a call from other scholars to allow thetopics discussed in the lyceum of the nineteenth century to shed light onthe social consciousness of the frontier settlements of the era. The recentdiscovery of the “Proceedings of the Naperville Lyceum” (1836-1843)provided the means to do this. Since political topics were clearly central tothe Naperville Lyceum members, this research focused on those items. Itis revealing that lyceum topics in this location were not self-absorbed. Thedebated topics included several global issues and did not simplychampion the American status quo. It suggests that the frontier settlers ofNaperville were concerned with concerns of justice as citizens of acosmopolitan world, one in which they valued self-governance. The studyfurther reveals how some topics have continued to be politically relevantfor more than 180 years since the Naperville Lyceum began. Characterization of copy-number variants in a large cohort of patients with von Willebrand disease reveals a relationship between disrupted regions and disease type

BACKGROUND: Genetic analysis for von Willebrand disease (VWD) commonly utilizes DNA sequencing to identify variants in the von Willebrand factor ( OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize CNVs in a large sample of VWF mutation-negative VWD patients. METHODS: To determine the role of CNVs in VWD, a VWF high-resolution comparative genomic hybridization array was custom-designed to avoid multiple sequence variations, repeated sequences, and the RESULTS: Among the 204 patients, 7 unique CNVs were found, with a total of 24 CNVs (12%). Of the 7 unique CNVs, 1 was novel, 1 was found in a VWF database, and 5 were previously reported. All patients with type 1C VWD and a CNV had the same exon 33 and 34 in-frame deletion. Certain clinical variables were also significantly different between those with and without CNVs. CONCLUSION: The in-frame deletion in patients with type 1C VWD exactly matches the D4N module of the D4 domain, a region where mutations and deletions are known to affect clearance. We observed significantly higher VWF-to-ristocetin cofactor levels in patients with type 1C VWD and a CNV than in patients without a CNV, suggesting a relationship between CNVs and the increased clearance observed in patients with type 1C VWD. Glycoprotein IbM activity was significantly lower in patients with type 1 VWD and a CNV than in patients without a CNV, suggesting that platelet binding is more affected by CNVs than single base pair mutations. This work elucidates some of the underlying genetic mechanisms of CNVs in these patients

Seafood graded oral food challenge outcomes in a pediatric tertiary care center

BACKGROUND: There are sparse data regarding the predictors of positive oral food challenges and reaction severity for seafood in children. OBJECTIVE: Identify clinical characteristics in children with seafood allergy who were most likely to experience a negative oral food challenge (OFC). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for children who had a graded OFC to seafood at a pediatric tertiary care center from 2008 through 2019. RESULTS: Sixty-three (60% male; average age 8 years; range 1-21 years) OFCs were performed, of which 21 were fish and 42 were shellfish. There were 10 (16%) positive OFCs and positive OFC rate was similar between fish (19%) and shellfish (14%). Forty-three children who underwent OFC had a reported history of IgE-mediated symptoms. Five of six children who had a history of anaphylaxis had a negative OFC. There was no difference in positive OFCs due to age, history of atopy, or initial allergic reaction history. The clinical characteristics of the positive OFCs were similar between fish and shellfish. A positive skin prick test to fish or shellfish did not increase the risk of a positive OFC. While the positive OFC rate did not differ for the shellfish food-specific IgE (FSIgE) level, there was a significant difference for fish (median \u3c0.34 kU CONCLUSION: A retrospective study of OFCs to seafood showed that the rate of a positive OFC was low. While seafood allergy is thought to be rarely outgrown, children who have a low FsIgE and/or skin testing can successfully tolerate seafood

The reports that follow identify mid-anchor businesses that have contributed to the social and economic wealth of the City of New Orleans for, in some cases, hundreds of years. The hope is that these businesses will be supported through new City initiatives to improve façades, marketability and expand employment opportunities. The research and resources provided by the students at UNO will support these efforts and hopefully contribute to the reinvestment and redevelopment of the new New Orleans
