    Progress at reducing the scale and conservation impact of cetacean bycatch has been slow, sporadic and limited to a few specific fisheries or circumstances. As a result bycatch remains perhaps the greatest immediate and well-documented threat to cetacean populations globally. Having recognized the critical importance of reducing bycatch levels to prevent the depletion, and in some cases extinction, of cetacean populations, World Wildlife Fund-US launched a global bycatch initiative early in 2002. Their strategy calls on governmental and non-governmental bodies to move quickly, cooperatively and thoughtfully to achieve bycatch reduction. As a supportive step a working group was established to identify priorities and provide guidance on how financial and other resources should be invested to address bycatch issues. The group will conduct a global survey of cetacean bycatch problems, classify and rank those problems according to an agreed set of criteria and provide a clear rationale for each problem assigned high priority for funding and intervention. The working group will emphasise: (1) situations that are especially critical (e.g. a species’ or population’s survival is immediately at risk from bycatch) and are not being addressed adequately; (2) circumstances where rapid progress could be made with a modest investment of resources; (3) situations in which bycatch is believed to pose a threat to cetaceans but a quantitative assessment is needed to verify the risk; and (4) fisheries in which a currently available solution (technical, socioeconomic or a combination) appears feasible. The report of the working group will be directed at governmental decision makers, aid agencies, nongovernmental organizations and related audiences

    Body weight-length relationships in giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) (Carnivora, Mustelidae)

    Few giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) have been measured and weighed and its actual size is controversial in the literature. This study presents the weight-length relationship of Amazonian giant otters using 15 captive individuals. The maximum length and weight were 163cm and 22.5kg, and 162cm and 28.8kg, for the males and females, respectively. The weight-length relationships were not significantly different between the sexes (t = 0.658, d.f.=11, P>0.05) and can be expressed by the equation: W=1.48×10-5 L2.81. Considering that some of the giant otters used in this study were old individuals (more than 10 years old), and that all the animals analyzed were healthy, it is possible to assume that the weight-length relationships obtained are probably a close approximation of the relationship of giant otters of the Amazon region and can be used by institutions that keep this species in captivity as a base to quickly assess the animal's nutritive status. © 2009 Tecpar

    Negotiating Value: Comparing Human and Animal Fracture Care in Industrial Societies

    At the beginning of the twentieth-century, human and veterinary surgeons faced the challenge of a medical marketplace transformed by technology. The socio-economic value ascribed to their patients – people and domestic animals – was changing, reflecting the increasing mechanisation of industry and the decreasing dependence of society upon non-human animals for labour. In human medicine, concern for the economic consequences of fractures “pathologised” any significant level of post-therapeutic disability, a productivist perspective contrary to the traditional corpus of medical values. In contrast, veterinarians adapted to the mechanisation of horse-power by shifting their primary professional interest to companion animals; a type of veterinary patient generally valued for the unique emotional attachment of the owner, and not the productive capacity of the animal. The economic rationalisation of human fracture care and the “sentimental” transformation of veterinary orthopaedic expertise indicates how these specialists utilised increasingly convergent rhetorical arguments to justify the application of innovative fracture care technologies to their humans and animal patients.
