Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of ornamental plants from Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil

A list of 35 scale insects collected from 72 ornamental plant species in Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil is provided. Regarding host specificity, 30 scale insects were polyphagous, 4 oligophagous, and 1 monophagous. A total of 102 coccoid/plant associations are recorded, 29 of which are new host records for the species; 60 are new host records for the species in Brazil. Pulvinaria urbicola Cockerell, 1893 (Coccidae), Phenacoccus similis Granara de Willink, 1983 (Pseudococcidae), and Orthezia molinarii (Morrison, 1952) (Ortheziidae) are recorded for the first time in Brazil. Primeiro registro de Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell, 1893) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) em Euterpe precatoria Martius (Arecaceae) no Brasil.

Euterpe precatoria Martius, 1824 is a palm tree of great socioeconomic importance for the northern region of Brazil, whose heart of palm and fruits are economically exploited. For the expansion of its cultivation in commercial plantations, there is a need to know the phytosanitary aspects of the crop, especially the associated insect pests. Thus, this work aimed was to record the scale insect Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell, 1893) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) infesting E. precatoria. Populations of this species were observed on E. precatoria plants in Rio Branco, state of Acre, Brazil. Thus, this is the first record of N. nipae on single açaí palm tree in the state of Acre and Brazil. Due to the socioeconomic importance of this palm for the North region and the damaging potential of N. nipae, further studies are strongly recommended in order to determine the level of damage and control alternatives

First record of Dysmicoccus boninsis Kuwana, 1909 (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on sugarcane in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Among the sap-sucking insects that infest sugarcane [Saccharum spp. (Poaceae)] around the world, scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) stand out with 103 recorded species. Ocorrência de Pseudococcus cryptus HEMPEL (HEMIPTERA: COCCOIDEA: PSEUDOCOCCIDAE) em limão-siciliano no estado do Tocantins.

Pseudococcus cryptus (Hempel, 1918) é uma espécie polífaga, amplamente distribuída no Sudeste Asiático, África Tropical, Mediterrâneo Oriental e América do Sul. Em Israel e no Japão é considerada praga de citros. No Brasil foi registrada para o Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais e São Paulo, principalmente sobre plantas de café e citros. Amostras do pseudococcídeo foram obtidas sobre planta de limão-siciliano, localizada em área urbana no município de Paraíso do Tocantins, TO, em julho de 2015. Observou-se alta infestação das cochonilhas na parte aérea da planta, brotos, frutos e folhas. Registra-se aqui a primeira ocorrência de P. cryptus para o Estado do Tocantins e, Citrus limon como nova planta hospedeira desse pseudococcídeo no Brasil.
