The main objectives of this research are to investigate whether: (1) STAD is more effective than PPP to teach speaking; (2) students having high creativity have better ability in speaking than those having low creativity; and (3) there is interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking to the eleventh graders of Science Program at SMA Negeri 7 in academic year of 2012/2013. This research applied an experimental study. The population of the study was the eleventh graders of Science Program totally consisting 140 students. Samples of the research were two classes; XI-IPA1 treated as the experimental class & XI-IPA2 treated as control class. The technique of sampling developed was cluster random sampling. Each class was categorized into two groups; students having high and low creativity. Techniques of collecting data were creativity test and speaking test. Data of the research were analyzed using Multifactor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Test of 2x2 and Tuckey Test. From the result of data analysis, it was discovered that: (1) STAD significantly differed from PPP with Fo > Ft and qo (between A1 and A2) > qt; (2) students having high creativity significantly differed in the speaking ability with Fo > Ft and qo (between B1 and B2) > qt; and (3) there was interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking with Fo > Ft, and the result Tuckey Test showed that: (1) the use of STAD significantly differed to students having high creativity from PPP to teach speaking with qo (between A1B1 & A2B1) > qt; and (b) the use of PPP significantly differed to students having low creativity from STAD to teach speaking with qo (between A1B2 & A2B2) > qt. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that STAD is more effective than PPP to teach speaking. The result of the research also showed that the students’ creativity affects the teaching methods in teaching speaking. Thus, English teachers are expected to select appropriate teaching methods to teach speaking to students having and low creativity. STAD can be used as an alternative teaching method to teach speaking to students having high creativity. Keywords: STAD, PPP, creativity, speaking, student, experimental study

    A Discovery on the Impact of Process Based Approach Towards Collage Students’ Ability of Writing English Paragraph

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui masalah-masalah menulis paragraf berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa; (2) mengetahui langkah-langkah Pendekatan Berbasis Proses dalam menulis paragraf berbahasa Inggris; and (3) mengkaji apakah Pendekatan Berbasis Proses berbengaruh positif dan signifikan atau tidak terhadap kemampuan menulis paragraf berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester empat yang tengah menempuh matakuliah Menulis jurusan pendidikan bahasa Inggris pada Fakultas Pendidikan Bahasa dan Seni IKIP Mataram tahun akademik 2016/2017 yang berjumlah 6 kelas dengan jumlah keseluruhan 174 mahasiswa. Sampel penelitian yaitu kelas IV-E dan IV-F dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 58 mahasiswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu menggunakan desain non ekuivalen kelompok kontrol pretest-posttest. Instrumen penelitian menggunakan penulisan paragraf narasi yang telah diuji validitas, reliabilitas, dan keterbacaannya. Data penelitian diperoleh dari hasil uji awal dan uji lanjutan penulisan paragraf narasi. Data penelitian selanjutnya dianalisa menggunakan analysis statistik descriptif dan inferensial menggunakan uji t dua sampel. Berdasarkan hasil uji statistik, diperoleh bahwa nilai rerata uji awal kelompok eksperimen adalah 58,01 dan nilai uji lanjut mencapai 70,34 sementara nilai rerata uji awal kelompok kontrol yaitu 55,97 dan nilai uji lanjut mencapai 68,79 dengan derajad kebebasan = 56. Hasil uji t menunjukkan nilai hitung (0,361) lebih rendah daripada nilai tabel (2,003) pada tingkat signifikansi 0,05 dengan derajad kebebasan =56. Hasil ini dapat diinterpretasikan bahwa penggunaan Pendekatan berbasis Proses dalam belajar menulis paragraf berdampak positif terhadap kemampuan menulis paragraf berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa, tetapi tidak signifikan.     Note-Taking Pairs Strategy Towards Students’ Critical Thinking Ability In Reading Comprehension

    This study aimed to seek the effect of the Note-Taking Pairs strategy on the students' critical thinking skill in reading comprehension. This study used an experimental method with pre-test and post-test design. The research sample covered class XI-IPA2 which was used as an experimental group and consisted of 26 students and class XI-IPA1 was used as a control group consisting of 26 students. The instruments used in collecting data were reading test in the form of multiple-choice and observation sheets of critical thinking skills. The finding data were subsequently analyzed by using SPSS 18. The t-test results showed that the t-test value (1.754) was higher than the t-table (1.671) at the significance level 0.05. Therefore, based on these results, it can be concluded that there is a positive effect from the use of the Note-Taking Pairs strategy on the students' critical thinking skill in reading comprehension at the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 2 Narmada

    The Effectiveness of Chain Drill Technique in Teaching Speaking

    Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan teknik Chain Drill dalam mengajarberbicara bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen semu menggunakan pretest-posttestcontrol group design. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk memperoleh data sampel pada penelitian ini adalah tesberbicara dalam bentuk instruksi. Teknik yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah pretest danposttestberbicara. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianaisis dengan menggunakan analisis statistik deskriptifdan inferensial untuk menarik sebuah kesimpulan. Berdasarkan analisis, ditemukan bahwa skor rata-rata post-test lebih tinggi dari skor rata-rata pre-test (64≥37), sedangkan di kelas kontrol, skor rata-rata post-test jugalebih tinggi daripada skor rata-rata pre-test (50≥30). Dari data yang diperoleh, diperoleh perbedaan skor baikpada post-test dari pre-test antara kedua kelas; kelas eksperimen 14≥7 untuk kelas kontrol yang menunjukkanskor eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada kelas kontrol. Analisis lebih lanjut pada uji-t, ditemukan bahwa skor uji-t(2,52) lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (1,671) dengan tingkat kebebasan 42. Dengan kata lain, Ha diterima dan Hoditolak, dimana terdapat perbedaan signifikan dalam perolehan selisih skor antara kelas eksperimen dankontrol. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan teknik Chain Drill efektif dalam mengajarberbicara. Abstract: This study aims at finding out the effectiveness of Chain Drill technique in teaching speaking. The technique used to collect datawas pretest and posttest of speaking test. Data gained were subsequently analyzed by using descriptive andinferential statistical analysis from which a conclusion was drawn. Based on the analysis, it was found that themean score of post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test (64≥37), while in the control class, the meanscore of post-test was also higher than the mean score of pre-test (50≥30). From the data obtained, it was foundthe difference in score both in post-test from pre-test between the two classes; experimental class 14≥7 forcontrol class which showed experimental score was higher than the control class. The further analysis on the t-test, it was found that t-test score (2.52) was higher than t-table (1.671) with the degree of freedom 42. In otherwords, H a was accepted and H o was rejected in which there was a significant difference in scores betweenexperiment and control class. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Chain Drill technique is effective inteaching speaking

    The Effect of Student Team Work Learning (STWL) towards Students’ Reading Comprehension

    This research was aimed at finding out whether or not Student Team Work Learning Strategy (STWL) has positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. The research was pre experimental with one  pre-test post-test design. The sample of the study was second grade students of MA Nurul Muhsini Jomang Batu Jai Lombok Tengah which consisted of one class 30 students. The instrument used was reading test inthe form of multile chose test and objective test which were consited of 25 items. The score was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to describe mean, mode, median, and standard deviation of group, and inferential analysis was used to describe the value of t-test for comparison between t-table. It was showed that the value of t-test = 5.411 was higher than the value of t-table = 1.692. Alternatively, using Student Team Work Learning Strategy has positive effect on students’ reading comprehension at second grade students of MA Nurul Muhsini Jomang Batu Jai Lombok Tengah

    Contract Learning as Individualized Instructional Strategies in Improving Students’ Performance in Academic Writing Courses

    The use of contract learning is essential to involve students actively in the classroom activities and to facilitate teachers’ control and flexibility in the teaching and learning process, while letting students to work on activities independently. Therefore, this research is aimed at 1) revealing out whether or not contract learning instruction has a significant difference in the students’ academic writing performance; 2) describing to what extent the contract learning promotes students’ learning and autonomy; and 3) elaborating how the students perceive the diagnostic and feedback phases of individualized strategy as embedded in the contract learning. This study is mixed method interventional research design because the data are obtained from quantitative and qualitative. The participants of the study was the year 3 students of English Department at Mandalika University of Education consisting of 21 students. The instruments used in collecting the data are diagnostic test of academic writing performance, contract form, and questionnaires. The quantitative data are analyzed through the inferential paired t-test. Meanwhile, the qualitative data of each individual’s response to each item on the questionnaire are broken down according to the responses to each question, and the responses are compared, contrasted, and explored to find patterns and themes. The results revealed that 1) contract learning has affected positively students’ learning and performance in academic writing, 2) contract learning brings positive improvement on academic writing performance and 3) positive  perception towards the application of contract learning was shown by the students as it provided self-study materials and multiple types of feedback from the  the lecturer. This implies that students may benefit from multiple types of feedback and that instructors’ expertise in effective feedback delivery is of paramount importance

    Cognitive and Social Strategies to Deal With Anxiety in Speaking: Typical Strategies and Application

    This study aimed to reveal students’ strategies to deal with anxiety in performing speaking at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School. The study was qualitative with case study design. The subjects of this study were eleventh grade students which were chosen through purposive sampling technique. The techniques of data collection were semi-structured interview and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and data verification and conclusion. Methodological triangulation technique was used to provide valid data. The result of this study showed there were five strategies used by eleventh grade students at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding school to deal with anxiety: Rehearsal, Preparation, Cooperation, Self-talk and Relaxation. From the five strategies, Rehearsal is the dominant strategies used by students to deal with speaking anxiety. Except Preparation and Relaxation, the other strategies were claimed effective to reduce anxiety. The five strategies were classified into two classifications: Cognitive strategy and Social strategy. Cognitive strategy involves Rehearsal and Preparation, while Social strategy involves Cooperation, Self-talk, and Relaxation. In this study, there were no strategies that represent the Metacognitive strategy

    The English communication skill training for shop waiters in the tourism area of Aik Berik aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about the use of a variety of tourism English, expressions and vocabulary commonly used in providing services especially to foreign tourists. This training activity involved the shop waiters around the tourism area of Aik Berik. The mentors of this training were lectures and students majoring in English who had proficient English skills. The training activity took a place around the shop location in the tourism area of Aik Berik, Central Lombok. The training method included material presentation including greetings, showing the way, kinds of food and beverage, menus, price lists, fruits, expressions, mini conversations and the practice of making short conversations among participants regarding the materials that had been taught. The results of the evaluation during the training showed high interest and enthusiasm of the shop waiters in participating in the whole series of training activities ranging from socialization to the implementation of the training. The shop waiters also showed an increase in the capability of using the language, expressions and vocabularies as well as better self-confidence in providing services for tourists. Participants also gave high appreciation to the presence of lectures and students as trainers and hoped that similar activities could continue to be carried out in order to enrich insight and improve communication skills and confidence of tourism activists, especially shop waiters in the Aik Berik tourism area
