Doctoral graduates of the Social Sciences and Humanities career paths : the case of Portugal
While it is said that the mobility of PhD graduates would be encouraged outside the aca- demic environment, they continue to work mostly within higher education and research. This paper explores the professional life courses of 25 PhD Portuguese graduates in the Social Scienc- esand Humanities in order to understand the process according to which they move or not from one sector to another. A first dataset results from an online survey of SSH doctoral graduates. A second dataset is made of the transcripts of 25 in-depth interviews with doctorate holders. The paper sheds light on their motivation and expectation, among other expectation emerging over the course of their doctoral research

Family and gender values in contemporary Europe: The attitudinal gender gap from a cross-national perspective
Drawing on data from the International Social Survey Programme 2002 survey
‘Family and changing gender roles’, this article looks at the diversity in attitudes
towards gender relations and family values in contemporary Europe from a gender
perspective. Rather than the idea of a one-dimensional move from tradition to modernity
that would gradually erase the attitudinal gender gap, the findings corroborate
that gender differentiation plays a key role in attitudinal patterns. Furthermore,
the attitudinal gender gap is path-specific and varies according to country-specific
societal modernisation. Hence, I examine differences in the statements of men and
women to portray attitudinal gender gaps on the national level. I follow the idea that
wide gender gaps are associated either with women’s financial autonomy or with
greater societal equality in education and political participation, since they allow for
greater female awareness of masculine domination. I also argue that family deinstitutionalisation
also correlates with greater attitudinal gender gaps
Fathers on Leave Alone in Portugal: Lived Experiences and Impact of Forerunner Fathers
In Portugal there has been a continuing enhancement of fathers’ leave entitlements
over the last two decades. Policy goals have underlined the improvement of workfamily
balance for both parents and the well-being of the child as well as the promotion
of gender equality, in particular through the increased involvement of fathers in
child care. The last reform of the parental leave system, in 2009, addressed all these
objectives but put a strong emphasis on fatherhood and gender equality by increasing
paternity leave to 4 weeks of fully-compensated leave (taken with the mother
after childbirth) and, more importantly, by introducing a 1-month ‘bonus scheme’ in
case of gender sharing of leave (Wall and Leitão 2014 ).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
