Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Constant Magnetic Field
We discuss the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation in systems of
noninteracting charged particles in three in one dimensions and in presence of
an external magnetic field. In the one dimensional, as well as in the magnetic
field cases, although not a critical temperature, a characteristic temperature
can be found, corresponding to the case in which the ground state density
becomes a macroscopic fraction of the total density. The case of relativistic
charged scalar and vector particles is studied. The results obtainedgive
support to the existence of superconductivity in extremely strong magnetic
fields, and leads to the prediction of superconductive-ferromagnetic behavior
in the vector field case, which might be of interest in condensed matter as
well as in cosmology. Some features of the magnetization in the early universe
are conjectured.Comment: 20 pages, 2 GIF figure
Naming Racism: A Conceptual Look at Internalized Racism in US Schools
Internalized racism describes the conscious and unconscious acceptance of a racial hierarchy where whites are consistently ranked above People of Color. Although scholars across multiple disciplines have discussed this concept, the role of schools in instilling and perpetuating internalized racism within Students of Color has very rarely been examined. This paper is a conceptual piece that utilizes a Critical Race Theory framework to acknowledge the racialized experiences within classroom pedagogy, curriculum, and unequal school resources. We examine how these factors can negatively affect racial group-identity and contribute to internalized racism for Students of Color. Because internalized racism works to sustain educational and social inequity, this paper also explores ways that schools can function to break this cycle
A moment based approach to the dynamical solution of the Kuramoto model
We examine the dynamics of the Kuramoto model with a new analytical approach.
By defining an appropriate set of moments the dynamical equations can be
exactly closed. We discuss some applications of the formalism like the
existence of an effective Hamiltonian for the dynamics. We also show how this
approach can be used to numerically investigate the dynamical behavior of the
model without finite size effects.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Revtex file, to appear in J. Phys.
Floquet interface states in illuminated three-dimensional topological insulators
Recent experiments showed that the surface of a three dimensional topological
insulator develops gaps in the Floquet-Bloch band spectrum when illuminated
with a circularly polarized laser. These Floquet-Bloch bands are characterized
by non-trivial Chern numbers which only depend on the helicity of the
polarization of the radiation field. Here we propose a setup consisting of a
pair of counter-rotating lasers, and show that one-dimensional chiral states
emerge at the interface between the two lasers. These interface states turn out
to be spin-polarized and may trigger interesting applications in the field of
optoelectronics and spintronics.Comment: 5 pages with 3 figures + supplemental materia
