    Empirical vulnerability curves for Italian mansory buildings: evolution of vulnerability model from the DPM to curves as a function of accelertion

    In the framework of the emergency management in the case of seismic events, the evaluation of the expected damage represents a basic requirement for risk informed planning. Seismic risk is defined by the probability to reach a level of damage on given exposed elements caused by seismic events occurring in a fixed period and in a fixed area. To this purpose, the expected seismic input, the exposed elements and their vulnerability have to be correctly evaluated. The aim of the research is to define a correct model of vulnerability curves, in PGA, for masonry structures in Italy, by heuristic approach starting from damage probability matrices (DPMs). To this purpose, the PLINIVS database, containing data on major Italian seismic events, has been used and supported by “critical” assumption on missing data. To support the reliability of this assumption, two vulnerability models, considering or not the hypothesis on the missing data, have been estimated and used to calculate the seismic scenario of the L’Aquila 2009 earthquake through the IRMA (Italian Risk MAp) platform. Finally, a comparison between the outcomes elaborated by IRMA platform and the observed damage collected in the AEDES forms, has been done. © 2020, The Author(s)

    Caesar II: An Italian decision support tool for the seismic risk. The case study of Torre Pellice, Villar Pellice and Pinerolo municipalities

    Italy is a country with high seismic risk; however, a broad seismic classification of the national territory has been introduced only in the last twenty years. Therefore, most of the existing buildings stock do not comply with the current anti-seismic codes. In recent years, the seismic events that occurred in Italy have highlighted the complexity of emergency management and the great challenge for public authorities called to answer to the post-event reconstruction and the planning of effective risk prevention and mitigation measures implemented in "peacetime". In this perspective, the CAESAR II project (Controlling, Mitigating and Managing Earthquake Emergency: Cost-Benefit and Multi-criteria Analysis of Impact Scenarios for Risk Reduction and Increased Resilience) has been developed as a decision support system for public authorities engaged in the development of seismic disaster risk reduction plans. CAESAR II includes a module for the simulation of retrofitting measures applied at the municipal scale, integrating different categories of anti-seismic and energy improvement measures based on the vulnerability analysis of the existing buildings stock. The CAESAR II tool's core is the module for evaluating "seismic impact scenarios" based on the end-users' hazard. The output of the model includes information on expected damage levels for buildings (from D0-no damage to D5- total collapse) and population (dead, injured and homeless). Impact scenarios can be customised according to the minimum unit of analysis assumed (municipality or 250x250m square mesh grid) and the availability of exposure data (from national census data or survey on the spot building by building according to the PLINIVS form). Scenarios include geo-referenced data managed by geo-servers to exchange data in a format compliant with OGC (Open Gis Consortium) standards and the European INSPIRE Directive. Simulation results can be further processed through the Multi-Criteria and Cost-Benefit Analysis modules to support the comparative assessment of alternative seismic and energy measurements. In this work, the procedures included in CAESAR II are described and a case study is reported. It concerns the analysis of the expected damage assessment on buildings and population for three municipalities in northern Italy, Torre Pellice, Villar Pellice and Pinerolo (Piedmont Region)

    Volcanic Risk Management: the Case of Mt. Etna 2006 Eruption

    Mt. Etna volcano is located in a very populated area of eastern Sicily (Italy). Its permanent degassing activity from summit craters and frequent eruptions impact significantly on town habitations and cultivated areas. In the latest years Etna has produced copious ash emission causing great losses to local economy and causing serious hazards to national and international air traffic over Mediterranean area and the often closure of Catania airport. In July 2006 eruptive vents opened on the East and South flanks of the summit craters showing irregular explosive and effusive activity lasting 6 months. This eruption represented the opportunity to perform the pre-operative test of FP6 Eurorisk-Preview (Prevention, Information and Early Warning) project aimed to develop tools for monitoring volcanoes. The test was performed during two temporal phases: the first one of early-warning was aimed to measure ground deformation and the second one during the crisis to survey volcanic ash produced during the explosions. The ground deformations were measured through the elaboration of SAR data. Beside the geophysical objectives, the test was also important to check data availability and efficiency of European Space Agency procedures. The pre-operative test has been peculiar to understand and quantify the delivering time of the final satellite products expected from the Volcanological Observatory in operative case. The analysis of July 2005 - July 2006 SAR data showed a pre-eruptive inflation trend in agreement with the ground network of GPS data. The magmatic source, that produced the September - October activity, has been located about 2.7 km below the summit craters. During the crisis phase characterized by paroxysmal activity, the Italian Civil Protection (DPC) in charge of airport closure in case of volcanic hazard, requested the satellite volcanic ash product retrieved from the NASA-MODIS data. An agreement between the industry Telespazio as direct broadcast of satellite data at Matera station and INGV was signed in order to elaborate the data in near-real time. The volcanic ash product provided information about: the presence of volcanic ash in the air; the affected area; the volcanic plume dispersal direction, dimensions and altitude and the volcanic ash loading. The satellite products and the observations report have been successively inserted in a web-interface. At the same time the observations report has been linked to the DPC dedicated Web-GIS interface that allows in a short time the availability of volcanic ash information to DPC in support to their decisions.Published77-811.10.     Contrast Agents during Pregnancy: Pros and Cons When Really Needed

    Many clinical conditions require radiological diagnostic exams based on the emission of different kinds of energy and the use of contrast agents, such as computerized tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance (MR), ultrasound (US), and X-ray imaging. Pregnant patients who should be submitted for diagnostic examinations with contrast agents represent a group of patients with whom it is necessary to consider both maternal and fetal effects. Radiological examinations use different types of contrast media, the most used and studied are represented by iodinate contrast agents, gadolinium, fluorodeoxyglucose, gastrographin, bariumsulfate, and nanobubbles used in contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). The present paper reports the available data about each contrast agent and its effect related to the mother and fetus. This review aims to clarify the clinical practices to follow in cases where a radiodiagnostic examination with a contrast medium is indicated to be performed on a pregnant patient

    Childbearing intentions in a low fertility context: the case of Romania

    This paper applies the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to find out the predictors of fertility intentions in Romania, a low-fertility country. We analyse how attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control relate to the intention to have a child among childless individuals and one-child parents. Principal axis factor analysis confirms which items proposed by the Generation and Gender Survey (GGS 2005) act as valid and reliable measures of the suggested theoretical socio-psychological factors. Four parity-specific logistic regression models are applied to evaluate the relationship between the socio-psychological factors and childbearing intentions. Social pressure emerges as the most important aspect in fertility decision-making among childless individuals and one-child parents, and positive attitudes towards childbearing are a strong component in planning for a child. This paper also underlines the importance of the region-specific factors when studying childbearing intentions: planning for the second child significantly differs among the development regions, representing the cultural and socio-economic divisions of the Romanian territory

    Impact of endometriosis on obstetric outcome after natural conception: a multicenter Italian study

    Purpose To evaluate obstetric outcome in women with endometriosis who conceive naturally and receive standard obstetric care in Italy. Methods Cases were consecutive women with endometriosis managed in eleven Italian referral centers. Controls were women in whom endometriosis was excluded. All women filled in a questionnaire addressing previous natural pregnancies. Marginal logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate the impact of endometriosis on obstetric outcome. A post hoc analysis was performed within the endometriosis group comparing women with severe adenomyosis versus women with absent or mild adenomyosis. Results Three hundred and fifty-five pregnancies in endometriosis group and 741 pregnancies in control group were included. Women with endometriosis had a higher risk of preterm delivery < 34 weeks (6.4% vs 2.8%, OR 2.42, 95% CI 1.22–4.82), preterm delivery < 37 weeks (17.8% vs 9.7%, OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.23–3.19), and neonatal admission to Intensive Care Unit (14.1% vs 7.0%, OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.23–3.36). At post hoc analysis, women with endometriosis and severe adenomyosis had an increased risk of placenta previa (23.1% vs 1.8%, OR 16.68, 95% CI 3.49–79.71), cesarean delivery (84.6% vs 38.9%, OR 8.03, 95% CI 1.69–38.25) and preterm delivery < 34 weeks (23.1% vs 5.7%, OR 5.52, 95% CI 1.38–22.09). Conclusion Women with endometriosis who conceive naturally have increased risk of preterm delivery and neonatal admission to intensive care unit. When severe adenomyosis is coexistent with endometriosis, women may be at increased risk of placenta previa and cesarean delivery. Trial registration Clinical trial registration number: NCT03354793

    How are time-dependent childbearing intentions realized? Realization, postponement, abandonment, bringing forward

    Our study aims to identify factors that facilitate or inhibit the realization of fertility intentions. The analysis uses data collected in the first two waves of a Hungarian longitudinal survey. Fertility intentions recorded at the first wave pertain to the subsequent 3-year period, just similar to the behavior variable measuring the realization of intentions, i.e., a birth within the 3-year period in question. For this analysis, we used the respondents’ demographic, socio-structural, and orientational traits recorded at the first interview. Our findings show that age, parity, and partnership play a determining role in the realization of fertility intentions, but employment status, religious affiliation, and overall life satisfaction all exhibit significant effects. A marked gender difference was detected not only with regard to employment status but in the area of values and orientations as well.L’objectif de notre Ă©tude est d’identifier les facteurs qui facilitent ou inhibent la rĂ©alisation des intentions de fĂ©conditĂ©. L’analyse s’appuie sur les deux premiĂšres vagues d’une enquĂȘte longitudinale menĂ©e en Hongrie. Les intentions de fĂ©conditĂ© recueillies dans le cadre de la premiĂšre vague concernent la pĂ©riode des trois annĂ©es Ă  venir, de la mĂȘme façon que la variable de comportement mesurant la rĂ©alisation des intentions, Ă  savoir, une naissance survenue au cours de cette mĂȘme pĂ©riode. Les caractĂ©ristiques dĂ©mographiques et socio-structurelles, de mĂȘme que certaines dispositions personnelles recueillies lors du premier entretien ont Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©es dans l’analyse. Nos rĂ©sultats indiquent qu’à la fois l’ñge, la paritĂ©, et la situation de couple jouent un rĂŽle capital dans la rĂ©alisation des intentions et aussi que la situation d’emploi, l’appartenance religieuse et le niveau de satisfaction par rapport Ă  la vie exercent une influence significative.     DTT - Divertor Tokamak Test facility: A testbed for DEMO

    The effective treatment of the heat and power exhaust is a critical issue in the road map to the realization of the fusion energy. In order to provide possible, reliable, well assessed and on-time answers to DEMO, the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) has been conceived and projected to be carried out and operated within the European strategy in fusion technology. This paper, based on the invited plenary talk at the 31st virtual SOFT Conference 2020, provides an overview of the DTT scientific proposal, which is deeply illustrated in the 2019 DTT Interim Design Report
