We present work-in-progress developing a communication framework that addresses the communication challenges of the decentralized multihop wireless environment. The main contribution is the combination of a fully distributed, asynchronous power save mechanism with adaptation of the timing patterns defined by the power save mechanism to improve the energy and bandwidth efficiency of communication in multihop wireless networks. The possibility of leveraging this strategy to provide more complex forms of traffic management is explored
Climate impact and energy efficiency from electricity generation through anaerobic digestion or direct combustion of short rotation coppice willow
Short rotation coppice willow is an energy crop used in Sweden to produce electricity and heat in combined heat and power plants. Recent laboratory-scale experiments have shown that SRC willow can also be used for biogas production in anaerobic digestion processes.
Here, life cycle assessment is used to compare the climate impact and energy efficiency of electricity and heat generated by these measures. All energy inputs and greenhouse gas emissions, including soil organic carbon fluxes were included in the life cycle assessment. The climate impact was determined using time-dependent life cycle assessment methodology.
Both systems showed a positive net energy balance, but the direct combustion system delivered ninefold more energy than the biogas system. Both systems had a cooling effect on the global mean surface temperature change. The cooling impact per hectare from the biogas system was ninefold higher due to the carbon returned to soil with the digestate.
Compensating the lower energy production of the biogas system with external energy sources had a large impact on the result, effectively determining whether the biogas scenario had a net warming or cooling contribution to the global mean temperature change per kWh of electricity. In all cases, the contribution to global warming was lowered by the inclusion of willow in the energy system. The use of time-dependent climate impact methodology shows that extended use of short rotation coppice willow can contribute to counteract global warming

Greenhouse gas performance of biodiesel production from straw: Soil carbon changes and time-dependent climate impact
Background: Use of bioâbased diesel is increasing in Europe. It is currently produced from oilseed crops, but can also be generated from lignocellulosic biomass such as straw. However, removing straw affects soil organic carbon (SOC), with potential consequences for the climate impact of the biofuel. This study assessed the climate impacts and energy balance of biodiesel production from straw using oleaginous yeast, with subsequent biogas production from the residues, with particular emphasis on SOC changes over time. It also explored the impact of four different scenarios for returning the lignin fraction of the biomass to soil to mitigate SOC changes. Climate impact was assessed using two methods, global warming potential (GWP) and a timeâdependent temperature model (âTs) that describes changes in mean global surface temperature as a function of time or absolute temperature change potential (AGTP).
Results: Strawâderived biodiesel reduced GWP by 33â80% compared with fossil fuels and primary fossil energy use for biodiesel production was 0.33â0.80 MJprim/MJ, depending on the scenario studied. Simulations using the timeâdependent temperature model showed that a scenario where all straw fractions were converted to energy carriers and no lignin was returned to soil resulted in the highest avoided climate impact. The SOC changes due to straw removal had a large impact on the results, both when using GWP and the timeâdependent temperature model.
Conclusions: In a climate perspective, it is preferable to combust straw lignin to produce electricity rather than returning it to the soil if the excess electricity replaces natural gas electricity, according to results from both GWP and timeâdependent temperature modelling. Using different methods to assess climate impact did not change the ranking between the scenarios, but the timeâdependent temperature model provided information about system behaviour over time that can be important for evaluation of biofuel systems, particularly in relation to climate target deadlines
Denna process resulterar i tre
Eurofins Food & Agro Testing Sweden AB.
produceras i bioraffinaderiet.
