Variable Interstellar Absorption toward the Halo Star HD 219188 - Implications for Small-Scale Interstellar Structure
Within the last 10 years, strong, narrow Na I absorption has appeared at
v_sun ~ -38 km/s toward the halo star HD 219188; that absorption has continued
to strengthen, by a factor 2-3, over the past three years. The line of sight
appears to be moving into/through a relatively cold, quiescent intermediate
velocity (IV) cloud, due to the 13 mas/yr proper motion of HD 219188; the
variations in Na I probe length scales of 2-38 AU/yr. UV spectra obtained with
the HST GHRS in 1994-1995 suggest N(H_tot) ~ 4.8 X 10^{17} cm^{-2}, ``halo
cloud'' depletions, n_H ~ 25 cm^{-3}, and n_e ~ 0.85-6.2 cm^{-3} (if T ~ 100 K)
for the portion of the IV cloud sampled at that time. The relatively high
fractional ionization, n_e/n_H >~ 0.034, implies that hydrogen must be
partially ionized. The N(Na I)/N(H_tot) ratio is very high; in this case, the
variations in Na I do not imply large local pressures or densities.Comment: 12 pages; aastex; to appear in ApJ
Atomic Diagnostics of X-ray Irradiated Protoplanetary Disks
We study atomic line diagnostics of the inner regions of protoplanetary disks
with our model of X-ray irradiated disk atmospheres which was previously used
to predict observable levels of the NeII and NeIII fine-structure transitions
at 12.81 and 15.55mum. We extend the X-ray ionization theory to sulfur and
calculate the fraction of sulfur in S, S+, S2+ and sulfur molecules. For the
D'Alessio generic T Tauri star disk, we find that the SI fine-structure line at
25.55mum is below the detection level of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer
(IRS), in large part due to X-ray ionization of atomic S at the top of the
atmosphere and to its incorporation into molecules close to the mid-plane. We
predict that observable fluxes of the SII 6718/6732AA forbidden transitions are
produced in the upper atmosphere at somewhat shallower depths and smaller radii
than the neon fine-structure lines. This and other forbidden line transitions,
such as the OI 6300/6363AA and the CI 9826/9852AA lines, serve as complementary
diagnostics of X-ray irradiated disk atmospheres. We have also analyzed the
potential role of the low-excitation fine-structure lines of CI, CII, and OI,
which should be observable by SOFIA and Herschel.Comment: Accepted by Ap
HyRec: A fast and highly accurate primordial hydrogen and helium recombination code
We present a state-of-the-art primordial recombination code, HyRec, including
all the physical effects that have been shown to significantly affect
recombination. The computation of helium recombination includes simple analytic
treatments of hydrogen continuum opacity in the He I 2 1P - 1 1S line, the He
I] 2 3P - 1 1S line, and treats feedback between these lines within the
on-the-spot approximation. Hydrogen recombination is computed using the
effective multilevel atom method, virtually accounting for an infinite number
of excited states. We account for two-photon transitions from 2s and higher
levels as well as frequency diffusion in Lyman-alpha with a full radiative
transfer calculation. We present a new method to evolve the radiation field
simultaneously with the level populations and the free electron fraction. These
computations are sped up by taking advantage of the particular sparseness
pattern of the equations describing the radiative transfer. The computation
time for a full recombination history is ~2 seconds. This makes our code well
suited for inclusion in Monte Carlo Markov chains for cosmological parameter
estimation from upcoming high-precision cosmic microwave background anisotropy

Polarized Broad H-alpha Emission from the LINER Nucleus of NGC 1052
Optical spectropolarimetry of the nucleus of the LINER NGC 1052, obtained at
the Keck Observatory, reveals a rise in polarization in the wings of the
H-alpha line profile. The polarization vector of H-alpha is offset by 67
degrees from the parsec-scale radio axis and by 83 degrees from the
kiloparsec-scale radio axis, roughly in accord with expectations for scattering
within the opening cone of an obscuring torus. The broad component of H-alpha
has FWHM ~ 2100 km/s in total flux and FWHM ~ 5000 km/s in polarized light.
Scattering by electrons is the mechanism most likely responsible for this
broadening, and we find T_e ~ 10^5 K for the scattering medium, similar to
values observed in Seyfert 2 nuclei. This is the first detection of a polarized
broad emission line in a LINER, demonstrating that unified models of active
galactic nuclei are applicable to at least some LINERs.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, prepared using the emulateapj style file,

Monitoring the Variable Interstellar Absorption toward HD 219188 with HST/STIS
We discuss the results of continued spectroscopic monitoring of the variable
intermediate-velocity (IV) absorption at v = -38 km/s toward HD 219188. After
reaching maxima in mid-2000, the column densities of both Na I and Ca II in
that IV component declined by factors >= 2 by the end of 2006. Comparisons
between HST/STIS echelle spectra obtained in 2001, 2003, and 2004 and HST/GHRS
echelle spectra obtained in 1994--1995 indicate the following: (1) The
absorption from the dominant species S II, O I, Si II, and Fe II is roughly
constant in all four sets of spectra -- suggesting that the total N(H) and the
(mild) depletions have not changed significantly over a period of nearly ten
years. (2) The column densities of the trace species C I (both ground and
excited fine-structure states) and of the excited state C II* all increased by
factors of 2--5 between 1995 and 2001 -- implying increases in the hydrogen
density n_H (from about 20 cm^{-3} to about 45 cm^{-3}) and in the electron
density n_e (by a factor >= 3) over that 6-year period. (3) The column
densities of C I and C II* -- and the corresponding inferred n_H and n_e --
then decreased slightly between 2001 and 2004. (4) The changes in C I and C II*
are very similar to those seen for Na I and Ca II. The relatively low total
N(H) and the modest n_H suggest that the -38 km/s cloud toward HD 219188 is not
a very dense knot or filament. Partial ionization of hydrogen appears to be
responsible for the enhanced abundances of Na I, C I, Ca II, and C II*. In this
case, the variations in those species appear to reflect differences in density

A model for atomic and molecular interstellar gas: The Meudon PDR code
We present the revised ``Meudon'' model of Photon Dominated Region (PDR
code), presently available on the web under the Gnu Public Licence at:
http://aristote.obspm.fr/MIS. General organisation of the code is described
down to a level that should allow most observers to use it as an interpretation
tool with minimal help from our part. Two grids of models, one for low
excitation diffuse clouds and one for dense highly illuminated clouds, are
discussed, and some new results on PDR modelisation highlighted.Comment: accepted in ApJ sup
Spitzer observations of the Massive star forming complex S254-S258: structure and evolution
We present Spitzer-IRAC, NOAO 2.1meter-Flamingos, Keck-NIRC, and
FCRAO-SEQUOIA observations of the massive star forming complex S254-S258,
covering an area of 25x20 arc-minutes. Using a combination of the IRAC and NIR
data, we identify and classify the young stellar objects (YSO) in the complex.
We detect 510 sources with near or mid IR-excess, and we classify 87 Class I,
and 165 Class II sources. The YSO are found in clusters surrounded by isolated
YSO in a low-density distributed population. The ratio of clustered to total
YSO is 0.8. We identify six new clusters in the complex. One of them,
G192.63-00, is located around the ionizing star of the HII region S255. We
hypothesize that the ionizing star of S255 was formed in this cluster. We also
detect a southern component of the cluster in HII region S256. The cluster
G192.54-0.15, located inside HII region S254 has a VLSR of 17 km/s with respect
to the main cloud, and we conclude that it is located in the background of the
complex. The structure of the molecular cloud is examined using 12CO and 13CO,
as well as a near-IR extinction map. The main body of the molecular cloud has
VLSR between 5 and 9 km/s. The arc-shaped structure of the molecular cloud,
following the border of the HII regions, and the high column density in the
border of the HII regions support the idea that the material has been swept up

Phylogenetic inferences of Atelinae (Platyrrhini) based on multi-directional chromosome painting in Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles b. marginatus
We performed multi-directional chromosome painting in a comparative cytogenetic study of the three Atelinae species Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles belzebuth marginatus, in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within this Platyrrhini subfamily. Comparative chromosome maps between these species were established by multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. The three species included in this study and four previously analyzed species from all four Atelinae genera were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of a data matrix comprised of 82 discrete chromosome characters. The results confirmed that Atelinae represent a monophyletic clade with a putative ancestral karyotype of 2n = 62 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed an evolutionary branching sequence \{Alouatta \{Brachyteles \{Lagothrix and Ateles\}\}\} in Atelinae and \{Ateles belzebuth marginatus \{Ateles paniscus paniscus \{Ateles belzebuth hybridus and Ateles geoffroyi\}\}\} in genus Ateles. High-Resolution Observations of Interstellar Ca I Absorption -- Implications for Depletions and Electron Densities in Diffuse Clouds
We present high-resolution (FWHM ~ 0.3-1.5 km/s) spectra of interstellar Ca I
absorption toward 30 Galactic stars. Comparisons of the column densities of Ca
I, Ca II, K I, and other species -- for individual components identified in the
line profiles and also when integrated over entire lines of sight -- yield
information on relative electron densities and depletions. There is no obvious
relationship between the ratio N(Ca I)/N(Ca II) [equal to n_e/(Gamma/alpha_r)
for photoionization equilibrium] and the fraction of hydrogen in molecular form
f(H2) (often taken to be indicative of the local density n_H). For a smaller
sample of sightlines for which the thermal pressure (n_H T) and local density
can be estimated via analysis of the C I fine-structure excitation, the average
electron density inferred from C, Na, and K (assuming photoionization
equilibrium) seems to be independent of n_H and n_H T. While the n_e obtained
from the ratio N(Ca I)/N(Ca II) is often significantly higher than the values
derived from other elements, the patterns of relative n_e derived from
different elements show both similarities and differences for different lines
of sight -- suggesting that additional processes besides photoionization and
radiative recombination commonly and significantly affect the ionization
balance of heavy elements in diffuse IS clouds. Such additional processes may
also contribute to the (apparently) larger than expected fractional ionizations
(n_e/n_H) found for some lines of sight with independent determinations of n_H.
In general, inclusion of ``grain-assisted'' recombination does reduce the
inferred n_e, but it does not reconcile the n_e estimated from different
elements. The depletion of calcium may have a much weaker dependence on density
than was suggested by earlier comparisons with CH and CN.Comment: aastex, 70 pages, accepted to ApJ
Transgenic avian-derived recombinant human interferon-alpha2b (AVI-005) in healthy subjects: an open-label, single-dose, controlled study.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study characterized the safety and pharmacological properties of AVI-005, a novel glycosylated recombinant human interferon-alpha2b produced from the egg whites of chickens transfected with human cDNA.
METHODS: 18 healthy volunteers received single subcutaneous rising doses (0.5, 1.66 or 5 million international units, MIU) of AVI-005. A randomized parallel comparator group of 10 subjects received 5 MIU of unglycosylated IFN-alpha2b (Intron A). The pharmacokinetic parameters t1/2, tmax, Cmax, AUC0-24h, Vd, and clearance were compared between AVI-005 and unglycosylated IFN-alpa2b.
RESULTS: At equipotent doses, AVI-005 had a larger AUC0-24h than the control interferon. Pharmacodynamic markers ofneopterin and beta2-microglobulin for the two treatments were similar. These markers were increased by AVI-005 in a dose-dependent manner. Pharmacodynamic responses to treatment with AVI-005 were shown by the change in mRNA expression for interferon inducible protein kinase and 2\u275\u27-oligoadenylate synthetase. Adverse events in the two groups were qualitatively and quantitatively similar.
CONCLUSION: AVI-005 demonstrates biological activity and pharmaco-kinetic properties in humans that support further development
