Implementation of a Primary Tapped Transformer in a High Frequency Isolated Power Converter

    Get PDF
Abstract: On load, transformer primary tap changing is not common in high frequency converters. This paper investigates a new converter topology to drive primary tapped transformers. The ideas that have been introduced previously are simply implemented into existing converter topologies which have been modified to accommodate a primary tapped transformer. The effects of efficiency with variation of source voltage and duty cycle are studied. It is shown that this topology can maintain a load voltage for a much wider source voltage variation without major sacrifices in efficiency

Advances in the diagnosis and management of allergic disease: Applications to South African practice

    Get PDF
There have been a number of advances in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases that are relevant to South African (SA) circumstances. These are all published or about to be published in new guidelines that provide practical advice to guide SA doctors who treat patients with these conditions. The guidelines include those for atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and food allergy. This article reflects the most pertinent aspects of the guidelines. It also provides a short summary of a new allergy diagnostic test available in SA, the multiplexmicroarray chip, known as the immuno-solid-phase allergen chip (ISAC) test. It provides component-resolved allergy testing for special circumstances and complex allergic problems and is certainly not required as a screening allergy test. Finally, this article gives an update on allergen immunotherapy – some patients with allergic conditions may benefit from immunotherapy. In SA, some forms of immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis and mild asthma may currently include sublingual immunotherapy

Relationship of age and hypertension to neuropsychological test performance

Young adult (X- = 29) and middle aged (X- =50) hypertensive and normotensive subjects were compared with respect to seven neuropsychological test scores derived from tests on the Halstead-Reitan battery. Age main effects, with inferior performance for the middle aged subjects, were observed for the localization and time portions of the Tactile Performance Test (TPT) and for the Trail Making A test. The multivariate age effect was significant for the composite of seven scores. A multivariate blood pressure main effect was obtained and main effect blood pressure was significant for the category test; hypertensives made more errors than normotensives. A blood pressure by age interaction was observed for finger tapping scores and the TPT-Memory scores with larger differences between hypertensives and normotensives for the younger than for the middle aged group. Results were discussed in terms of previous studies of age and hypertension with the WAIS, the Primary Mental Abilities Test and serial reaction time measures. The poor prediction of hypertensive status from individual neuropsychological test scores was emphasized and readers were cautioned not to conclude that essential hypertensives, as a group, can be characterized as brain damaged

Some considerations for miniaturized measurement shunts in high frequency power electronic converters.

    Get PDF
Abstract: Power semi-conductors are able to achieve switching transients within a few nanoseconds and possibly even faster. These fast switching transients will need to be measured and analyzed thoroughly. In this paper four different types of shunt constructions and installations are tested on the same power electronics circuit, giving widely diverse results. Interpreting and analyzing these measurement results will assist in developing accurate current measurement devices for fast switching transient power electronic converters of the future

An experimental study of switching GaN FETs in a coaxial transmission line

    Get PDF
Abstract: The switching characteristics of GaN FETs have not yet been measured accurately because of their small electromagnetic size in relation to the circuit and the electromagnetic environment the measurements are exposed to. Switching GaN FETs in a transmission line will allow for measurements to be taken in an electromagnetically defined environment. The transmission line is adapted to take optimum measurements. This is proven by the waveforms presented

Education and specialist referral of patients with atopic dermatitis

    Get PDF
Educating patients with atopic dermatitis is an essential and necessary part of therapy and particularly important when young children are involved. Quality of life is seriously impaired if patients or their carers do not understand the chronic and relapsing nature of the disease and how it can be treated.
