    Strength training to prevent falls in older adults: A systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    We performed a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effects of strength training (ST), as compared to alternative multimodal or unimodal exercise programs, on the number of falls in older adults (=60 years). Ten databases were consulted (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, EMBASE, PEDro, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science), without limitations on language or publication date. Eligibility criteria were as follows: RCTs with humans =60 years of age of any gender with one group performing supervised ST and a group performing another type of exercise training, reporting data pertaining falls. Certainty of evidence was assessed with Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). Meta-analysis used a random effects model to calculate the risk ratio (RR) for number of falls. Five RCTs with six trials were included (n = 543, 76% women). There was no difference between ST and alternative exercise interventions for falls (RR = 1.00, 95% CI 0.77–1.30, p = 0.99). The certainty of evidence was very low. No dose–response relationship could be established. In sum, ST showed comparable RR based on number of falls in older adults when compared to other multimodal or unimodal exercise modalities, but evidence is scarce and heteroge-neous, and additional research is required for more robust conclusions.     Inhibition of <i>Listeria monocytogenes</i> by Phage Lytic Enzymes displayed on Tailored Bionanoparticles

    The high mortality rate associated with Listeria monocytogenes and its ability to adapt to the harsh conditions employed in food processing has ensured that this pathogen remains a serious problem in the ready-to-eat food sector. Bacteriophage-derived enzymes can be applied as biocontrol agents to target specific foodborne pathogens. We investigated the ability of a listeriophage endolysin and derivatives thereof, fused to polyhydroxyalkanoate bionanoparticles (PHA_BNPs), to lyse and inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes. Turbidity reduction assays confirmed the lysis of L. monocytogenes cells at 37 °C upon addition of the tailored BNPs. The application of BNPs also resulted in the growth inhibition of L. monocytogenes. BNPs displaying only the amidase domain of the phage endolysin were more effective at inhibiting growth under laboratory conditions (37 °C, 3 × 10(7) CFU/mL) than BNPs displaying the full-length endolysin (89% vs. 83% inhibition). Under conditions that better represent those found in food processing environments (22 °C, 1 × 10(3) CFU/mL), BNPs displaying the full-length endolysin demonstrated a greater inhibitory effect compared to BNPs displaying only the amidase domain (61% vs. 54% inhibition). Our results demonstrate proof-of-concept that tailored BNPs displaying recombinant listeriophage enzymes are active inhibitors of L. monocytogenes

    Evolution of the apricot industry in Italy and the national program &#8220;List of recommended fruit cultivars&#8221;

    Over recent decades many new fruit-tree cultivars have become available, including apricot, obtained by breeding programs conducted both in Italy and abroad. However, the experience acquired so far on apricot has shown that introduction of novel cultivars, especially of foreign origin, may often give disappointing results, with unpredictable variability depending on the environment. In 1992 a National Program was launched to draw up a list of \u93Recommended fruit varieties\u94 for fruit-tree growers. As part of this program, agreements were made with a number of Institutions (Operating Units) located in different areas of Italy. The new cultivars bred in Italy and in other countries were incorporated in the collections of the various Operating Units for analysis of vegetative, pomological, horticultural and technological characteristics, according to common descriptor. The traits thereby determined were used for classification of the cultivars into four lists: A, B, C, Fail.
