    Population Dynamics in the Penna Model

    We build upon the recent steady-state Penna model solution, Phys.Rev.Lett. 89, 288103 (2002), to study the population dynamics within the Penna model. We show, that any perturbation to the population can be broken into a collection of modes each of which decay exponentially with its respective time constant. The long time behaviour of population is therefore likely to be dominated by the modes with the largest time constants. We confirm our analytical approach with simulation data.Comment: 6 figure

    Punctuated equilibria and 1/f noise in a biological coevolution model with individual-based dynamics

    We present a study by linear stability analysis and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a simple model of biological coevolution. Selection is provided through a reproduction probability that contains quenched, random interspecies interactions, while genetic variation is provided through a low mutation rate. Both selection and mutation act on individual organisms. Consistent with some current theories of macroevolutionary dynamics, the model displays intermittent, statistically self-similar behavior with punctuated equilibria. The probability density for the lifetimes of ecological communities is well approximated by a power law with exponent near -2, and the corresponding power spectral densities show 1/f noise (flicker noise) over several decades. The long-lived communities (quasi-steady states) consist of a relatively small number of mutualistically interacting species, and they are surrounded by a ``protection zone'' of closely related genotypes that have a very low probability of invading the resident community. The extent of the protection zone affects the stability of the community in a way analogous to the height of the free-energy barrier surrounding a metastable state in a physical system. Measures of biological diversity are on average stationary with no discernible trends, even over our very long simulation runs of approximately 3.4x10^7 generations.Comment: 20 pages RevTex.     On The Energy Efficiency And Performance Of Irregular Application Executions On Multicore, Numa And Manycore Platforms

    Until the last decade, performance of HPC architectures has been almost exclusively quantified by their processing power. However, energy efficiency is being recently considered as important as raw performance and has become a critical aspect to the development of scalable systems. These strict energy constraints guided the development of a new class of so-called light-weight manycore processors. This study evaluates the computing and energy performance of two well-known irregular NP-hard problems-the Traveling-Salesman Problem (TSP) and K-Means clustering-and a numerical seismic wave propagation simulation kernel-Ondes3D-on multicore, NUMA, and manycore platforms. First, we concentrate on the nontrivial task of adapting these applications to a manycore, specifically the novel MPPA-256 manycore processor. Then, we analyze their performance and energy consumption on those different machines.     Reduction of brain metastases in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1-deficient mice with transgenic ocular tumors

    Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 is known to play a paradoxical positive role in tumor angiogenesis, but its contribution to metastatic spread remains unclear. We studied the impact of PAI-1 deficiency in a transgenic mouse model of ocular tumors originating from retinal epithelial cells and leading to brain metastasis (TRP-1/SV40 Tag mice). PAI-1 deficiency did not affect primary tumor growth or vascularization, but was associated with a smaller number of brain metastases. Brain metastases were found to be differentially distributed between the two genotypes. PAI-1-deficient mice displayed mostly secondary foci expanding from local optic nerve infiltration, whereas wild-type animals displayed more disseminated nodules in the scissura and meningeal spaces. SuperArray GEArray analyses aiming to detect molecules potentially compensating for PAI-1 deficiency demonstrated an increase in fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) gene expression in primary tumors, which was confirmed by RT-PCR and western blotting. Our data provide the first evidence of a key role for PAI-1 in a spontaneous model of metastasis, and suggest that angiogenic factors, such as FGF-1, may be important for primary tumor growth and may compensate for the absence of PAI-1. They identify PAI-1 and FGF-1 as important targets for combined anti-tumor strategies

    Este trabalho teve por objetivo o estudo da lixiviação de sulfona de aldicarbe em um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, na região de Lavras, MG, para posterior comparação com os resultados obtidos pelos simuladores CALF e PESTLA. Os resultados mostraram alta lixiviação de sulfona de aldicarbe no solo em estudo. Aos 44 dias após a aplicação do inseticida e com uma lâmina de água acumulada de 241,4 mm, a quantidade média de sulfona de aldicarbe remanescente nas colunas de solo de 45 cm de profundidade foi equivalente a 17,92% (±5,88) da dose aplicada, enquanto os simuladores CALF e PESTLA estimaram 20,52% e 37,82%, respectivamente. O simulador CALF gerou melhores estimativas da quantidade média de sulfona de aldicarbe no perfil do solo nas diferentes datas de amostragem, enquanto o simulador PESTLA gerou melhores estimativas da distribuição do inseticida ao longo do perfil do solo, nas diferentes datas de amostragem.<br>This work was carried out to study the leaching of aldoxycarb in a Red Yellow Latossol in Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, and to compare the observed results with those obtained by the simulators CALF and PESTLA. The results showed a high leaching of aldoxycarb in the soil. After 44 days of the insecticide application and with 241.4 mm of accumulated water applied in each column, the remained quantity of aldoxycarb in the soil columns (45 cm long) was 17.92% (±5.88) of the initial applied rate. However, the simulators CALF and PESTLA predicted 20.52% and 37.82%, respectively.
