Globular cluster formation efficiencies from black-hole X-ray binary feedback
We investigate a scenario in which feedback from black-hole X-ray binaries
(BHXBs) sometimes begins inside young star clusters before strong supernova
feedback. Those BHXBs could reduce the gas fraction inside embedded young
clusters whilst maintaining virial equilibrium, which may help globular
clusters (GCs) to stay bound when supernova-driven gas ejection subsequently
occurs. Adopting a simple toy model with parameters guided by BHXB population
models, we produce GC formation efficiencies consistent with
empirically-inferred values. The metallicity dependence of BHXB formation could
naturally explain why GC formation efficiency is higher at lower metallicity.
For reasonable assumptions about that metallicity dependence, our toy model can
produce a GC metallicity bimodality in some galaxies without a bimodality in

Regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations near the boundary
We present some new regularity criteria for ``suitable weak solutions'' of
the Navier-Stokes equations near the boundary in dimension three. We prove that
suitable weak solutions are H\"older continuous up to the boundary provided
that the scaled mixed norm with ,
, is small near the boundary. Our methods yield new
results in the interior case as well. Partial regularity of weak solutions is
also analyzed under some conditions of the Prodi-Serrin type
Unconditional preparation of entanglement between atoms in cascaded optical cavities
We propose a scheme to unconditionally entangle the internal states of atoms
trapped in separate high finesse optical cavities. The scheme uses the
technique of quantum reservoir engineering in a cascaded cavity QED setting,
and for ideal (lossless) coupling between the cavities generates an entangled
pure state. Highly entangled states are also shown to be possible for

Leptogenesis and residual CP symmetry
We discuss flavour dependent leptogenesis in the framework of lepton flavour
models based on discrete flavour and CP symmetries applied to the type-I seesaw
model. Working in the flavour basis, we analyse the case of two general
residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, which corresponds to all
possible semi-direct models based on a preserved in the neutrino sector,
together with a CP symmetry, which constrains the PMNS matrix up to a single
free parameter which may be fixed by the reactor angle. We systematically study
and classify this case for all possible residual CP symmetries, and show that
the -matrix is tightly constrained up to a single free parameter, with only
certain forms being consistent with successful leptogenesis, leading to
possible connections between leptogenesis and PMNS parameters. The formalism is
completely general in the sense that the two residual CP symmetries could
result from any high energy discrete flavour theory which respects any CP
symmetry. As a simple example, we apply the formalism to a high energy
flavour symmetry with a generalized CP symmetry, broken to two residual CP
symmetries in the neutrino sector, recovering familiar results for PMNS
predictions, together with new results for flavour dependent leptogenesis.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figure

Monovision LASIK in emmetropic presbyopic patients.
BackgroundTo evaluate the efficacy and patient satisfaction of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) monovision correction in presbyopic emmetropic patients.MethodsA retrospective review of 294 patients who underwent LASIK for monovision was conducted. All patients had preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity in each eye of 20/25 or better in both eyes and underwent primary LASIK treatment in one eye with a near target; 82 patients underwent surgery in the distant eye for hypermetropia. Patients completed a patient-reported-outcome questionnaire at their one-month postoperative visit. Analysis was performed on a per patient basis with a logistic regression model.ResultsPatients achieved a postoperative mean spherical equivalent of -0.05 diopters (D) in the distant eye and -1.92 D in the near eye. Prior to surgery, 64.7% (n=178) of patients reported they were satisfied or very satisfied with their vision; postoperatively, this increased to 85.4% (n=251). The greatest predictor of dissatisfaction after surgery was severe patient-reported visual phenomena (glare, halos, starbursts, ghosting) (odds ratio 1.18, P=0.001).ConclusionsLASIK monovision for presbyopic patients with low refractive error and good preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity is both safe and effective with high patient satisfaction. Patients who were dissatisfied in the postoperative period tended to be those with postoperative visual symptoms
