En el contexto económico de nuestras sociedades capitalistas, el diseño es un instrumento para aumentar la cuota de mercado. Sin embargo, en todo sistema existen fracturas y contradicciones y los diseñadores pueden operar productivamente con ellas. Uno de sus grandes desafíos es lograr la consistencia profesional sin renunciar a los principios éticos. Algunos ya han aceptado el reto y desde mediados de la década de 1990 la preocupación por el medio ambiente y por el usuario es cada vez mayor. John Thackara se ha referido a la aparición de un diseño consciente, un modo de trabajar apoyado en la idea de que la ética y la responsabilidad pueden informar las decisiones de diseño sin constreñir la innnovación y el desarrollo tecnológico. Diseñadores X y nuevos emergentes: una instantánea

Este artículo presenta las primeras conclusiones de una investigación más amplia que se está llevando a cabo sobre el Sistema Diseño de Barcelona. Desde finales de los años ochenta y hasta la actualidad, al diseño barcelonés se han ido incorporando nuevos diseñadores con una serie de planteamientos conceptuales y formales diferentes a los de sus predecesores -aunque herederos tanto de las ideas modernas como postmodernas- debido, sobre todo, a que se encuentran inmersos en fenómenos sociales de tanta trascendencia como son las transformaciones del sistema productivo, la globalización, el impacto de las nuevas tecnologías y, en especial, el potencial de Internet

Visit Spain: The image of Spain in the state's tourist poster (1928-1975)

Throught the twentieth century, tourist posters have played a key role in the transmission of the image of Spain abroad. This article focuses on two periods in which they had a greater role: the end of the reign of Alfonso XIII with the founding of the National Tourist Board and the Franco dictatorship. These two periods are two different ways to show the country's image. The first was an attempt to spread the wealth and diversity of Spain, in an effort to break stereotypes that travellers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had created. The second used many of these clichés in order to gain acceptance of the regime at a time of international isolation

Des de la fi dels anys vuitanta fins a l'actualitat, s'han anat incorporant nous dissenyadors al disseny barceloní. Els nouvinguts tenen plantejaments conceptuals i formals diferents dels seus predecessors -malgrat ser hereus tant de les idees modernes com de les postmodernes-, sobretot pel fet de trobar-se immersos en fenòmens socials de tanta transcendència com les transformacions del sistema productiu, la globalització, l'impacte de les noves tecnologies i, especialment, el potencial d'Internet

Generation X and new emerging designers: a snapshot

This article presents the first conclusions of a more extensive research project that is being carried out on Sistema Diseño Barcelona. From the late 1980s to date, Barcelona design has been welcoming new designers who, albeit having inherited both our modern and postmodern ideas, have contributed a number of conceptual and formal approaches different to those of their predecessors, mainly because they are immersed in extremely relevant social phenomena such as productive system transformations, globalisation, the impact of new technologies and, in particular, the Internet's potential

Etiology and Surgical Management of Cervical Spinal Epidural Abscess (SEA):: A Systematic Review.

Study Design: Systematic analysis and review. Objective: Evaluation of the presentation, etiology, management strategies (including both surgical and nonsurgical options), and neurological functional outcomes in patients with cervical spinal epidural abscess (SEA). Methods: The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria were used to create a framework based on which articles pertaining to cervical SEA were chosen for review following a search of the Ovid and PubMed databases using the search terms epidural abscess and cervical. Included studies needed to have at least 4 patients aged 18 years or older, and to have been published within the past 20 years. Results: Database searches yielded 521 potential articles in PubMed and 974 potential articles in Ovid. After review, 11 studies were ultimately identified for inclusion in this systematic review. Surgery appears to be a well-tolerated management strategy with limited complications for patients with cervical SEA. However, the quantity of data comparing medical and surgical treatment of cervical SEA is limited and the bulk of the data is derived from low quality studies. Conclusion: Data reporting was heterogeneous among studies making it difficult to draw discrete conclusions. Early surgical intervention may be appropriate in selected patients with cervical epidural abscess, but it is not clear what distinguishes these patients from those who are successfully managed nonoperatively
