In this report we have made a systematic study of strangeness production in proton-proton(pp),proton-nucleus(pA) and nucleus- nucleus(AA) collisions at CERN Super Proton Synchroton energies, using   HIJING   MONTE   CARLO   MODEL\,\,\, HIJING\,\,\, MONTE \,\,\,CARLO \,\,\,MODEL \\ (version HIJ.01HIJ.01). Numerical results for mean multiplicities of neutral strange particles ,as well as their ratios to negatives hadrons() for p-p,nucleon-nucleon(N-N),\,\,p-S,\,\,p-Ag,\,\,p-Au('min. bias')collisions and p-Au,\,\,S-S,\,\,S-Ag,\,\,S-Au ('central')collisions are compared to experimental data available from CERN experiments and also with recent theoretical estimations given by others models. Neutral strange particle abundances are quite well described for p-p,N-N and p-A interactions ,but are underpredicted by a factor of two in A-A interactions for Λ,Λˉ,KS0\Lambda,\bar{\Lambda}, K^{0}_{S} in symmetric collisions(S-S,\,\,Pb-Pb)and for Λ,Λˉ  \Lambda,\bar{\Lambda}\,\,in asymmetric ones(S-Ag,\,\,S-Au,\,\,S-W). A qualitative prediction for rapidity, transverse kinetic energy and transverse momenta normalized distributions are performed at 200 GeV/Nucleon in p-S,S-S,S-Ag and S-Au collisions in comparison with recent experimental data. HIJING model predictions for coming experiments at CERN for S-Au, S-W and Pb-Pb interactions are given. The theoretical calculations are estimated in a full phase space.Comment: 33 pages(LATEX),18 figures not included, available in hard copy upon request , Dipartamento di Fisica Padova, report DFPD-94-NP-4

Direct measurements of the fractional quantum Hall effect gaps

We measure the chemical potential jump across the fractional gap in the low-temperature limit in the two-dimensional electron system of GaAs/AlGaAs single heterojunctions. In the fully spin-polarized regime, the gap for filling factor nu=1/3 increases LINEARLY with magnetic field and is coincident with that for nu=2/3, reflecting the electron-hole symmetry in the spin-split Landau level. In low magnetic fields, at the ground-state spin transition for nu=2/3, a correlated behavior of the nu=1/3 and nu=2/3 gaps is observed

Electrostatic tailoring of magnetic interference in quantum point contact ballistic Josephson junctions

The magneto-electrostatic tailoring of the supercurrent in quantum point contact ballistic Josephson junctions is demonstrated. An etched InAs-based heterostructure is laterally contacted to superconducting niobium leads and the existence of two etched side gates permits, in combination with the application of a perpendicular magnetic field, to modify continuously the magnetic interference pattern by depleting the weak link. For wider junctions the supercurrent presents a Fraunhofer-like interference pattern with periodicity h/2e whereas by shrinking electrostatically the weak link, the periodicity evolves continuously to a monotonic decay. These devices represent novel tunable structures that might lead to the study of the elusive Majorana fermions.Comment: 4.5 pages, 4 color figure

Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems at Filling Factor \nu=2: An Exact Diagonalisation Study

    Get PDF
We present an exact diagonalisation study of bilayer quantum Hall systems at a filling factor of two in the spherical geometry. We find the high-Zeeman-coupling phase boundary of the broken symmetry canted antiferromagnet is given exactly by previous Hartree-Fock mean-field theories, but that the state's stability at weak Zeeman coupling has been qualitatively overestimated. In the absence of interlayer tunneling, degeneracies occur between total spin multiplets due to the Hamiltonian's invariance under independent spin-rotations in top and bottom two-dimensional electron layers.Comment: Some remarks added in the discussion of the phase diagram, and some typos corrected. Effect of in-plane magnetic field on magnetic phase transitions in nu=2 bilayer quantum Hall systems

By using the effective bosonic spin theory, which is recently proposed by Demler and Das Sarma [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3895 (1999) ], we analyze the effect of an external in-plane magnetic field on the magnetic phase transitions of the bilayer quantum Hall system at filling factor nu=2. It is found that the quantum phase diagram is modified by the in-plane magnetic field. Therefore, quantum phase transitions can be induced simply by tilting the magnetic field. The general behavior of the critical tilted angle for different layer separations and interlayer tunneling amplitudes is shown. We find that the critical tilted angles being calculated agree very well with the reported values. Moreover, a universal critical exponent for the transition from the canted antiferromagnetic phase to the ferromagnetic phase is found to be equal to 1/2 within the present effective theory.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages with 3 EPS figures include

Spin Bose Glass Phase in Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems at ν=2\nu=2

We develop an effective spin theory to describe magnetic properties of the ν=2\nu=2 Quantum Hall bilayer systems. In the absence of disorder this theory gives quantitative agreement with the results of microscopic Hartree-Fock calculations, and for finite disorder it predicts the existence of a novel spin Bose glass phase. The Bose glass is characterized by the presence of domains of canted antiferromagnetic phase with zero average antiferromagnetic order and short range mean antiferromagnetic correlations. It has infinite antiferromagnetic transverse susceptibility, finite longitudinal spin susceptibility and specific heat linear in temperature. Transition from the canted antiferromagnet phase to the spin Bose glass phase is characterized by a universal value of the longitudinal spin conductance.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figure

Spin gap in the 2D electron system of GaAs/AlGaAs single heterojunctions in weak magnetic fields

We study the interaction-enhanced spin gaps in the two-dimensional electron gas confined in GaAs/AlGaAs single heterojunctions subjected to weak magnetic fields. The values are obtained from the chemical potential jumps measured by magnetocapacitance. The gap increase with parallel magnetic field indicates that the lowest-lying charged excitations are accompanied with a single spin flip at the odd-integer filling factor nu=1 and nu=3, in disagreement with the concept of skyrmions.Comment: as publishe

Diffusion Approximation of Stochastic Master Equations with Jumps

In the presence of quantum measurements with direct photon detection the evolution of open quantum systems is usually described by stochastic master equations with jumps. Heuristically, from these equations one can obtain diffusion models as approximation. A necessary condition for a general diffusion approximation for jump master equations is presented. This approximation is rigorously proved by using techniques for Markov process which are based upon the convergence of Markov generators and martingale problems. This result is illustrated by rigorously obtaining the diffusion approximation for homodyne and heterodyne detection.Comment: 15 page
