    Interferometry for polarization mode dispersion measurements in single fibres

    We present two interferometric techniques for the measurements of the polarization mode dispersion of standard (i.e. circular) single-mode fibers. The first method uses an interferometric loop and works in the frequency domain. The second uses a polarization maintaining Michelson interferometer and works in the time domain. Their output are related by a Fourier transformation. Both techniques provide information about the entire statistical distribution of the polarization mode delays. Also, both techniques can be applied to the characterization of installed lines. The setups are presented, the principle of the measurements are discussed and examples of results are shown

    Efficient Palladium-Catalyzed Cyclotrimeriza- tion of Arynes: Synthesis of Triphenylenes**

    Over the last 15 years much effort has been devoted to the preparation and characterization of transition metal complexes of arynes. [1] Parallel studies on the reactivity of these complexesÐparticularly those of Ti, Zr, As part of a project aimed at the development of new reactions of arynes promoted by metal complexes, here we report on the metal-mediated cyclotrimerization of arynes. These preliminary results show that the reaction proceeds in the presence of catalytic amounts of metal and that it has great potential for the preparation of triphenylenes, which are found at the core of many discotic liquid crystals [9] An example of the formation of triphenylene as side product of a palladium-catalyzed domino reaction has also been reported. [10] However, to the best of our knowledge, efficient preparation of triphenylenes by metalcatalyzed reaction of arynes is without precedent. Development of a catalytic procedure for the trimerization of arynes requires careful selection of the catalyst and the method for generation of the aryne. The catalyst was chosen from among the various metal systems used for trimerization of alkynes; suitable candidates contained metals such as Ni, Co, Pd, and Pt.     Magnetism and photophysics in supramolecular transition-metal compounds

    Based on a synthetic strategy, extended anionic, homo and bimetallic oxalato-bridged transition-metal compounds with two (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) connectivities can be synthesized and crystallized. Thereby, the choice of the templating counterions will determine the crystal chemistry. Since the oxalato bridge is a mediator for both antiferro and ferromagnetic interactions between similar and dissimilar metal ions, long-range magnetic ordering will occur. Examples of the determination of magnetic structures in 2D and 3D compounds by means of elastic neutron scattering methods will be discussed. In addition, due to the possibility of the variation of different metal ions in varying oxidation states, interesting photophysical processes can be observed within the extended three-dimensional host/guest systems
