    Gravity well: underwater play

    Get PDF
More and more technology supports utilitarian interactions in altered gravity conditions, for example underwater and during Zero-G flights. Extending this, we are interested in digital play in these conditions, and in particular see an opportunity to explore underwater bodily games. We present an interactive shallow-water system that supports bodily play through water-movement interactions: Gravity Well. Through designing the system and combining aquabatic principles with exertion game design strategies, we identified a set of design tactics for underwater play based on the relationship between the afforded type, and level, of bodily exertion relative to pressure change and narcosis. With our work, we aim to inspire designers to utilize the unique characteristics of bodily interactions underwater and guide them in developing digital play in altered gravity domains

Time trends in survival and readmission following coronary artery bypass grafting in Scotland, 1981-96: retrospective observational study

Improvements in coronary revascularisation techniques and an increase in the use of percutaneous interventions1 have led to a rise in the number of coronary artery bypass grafting operations in older patients with more severe cardiac disease and worse comorbidity and who have previously undergone revascularisation procedures. 2 3 Advances in surgical and anaesthetic techniques have prevented a worsening risk profile from being translated into an increase in perioperative deaths. 2 3 The aim of our study was to examine time trends in major outcomes up to two years after coronary artery bypass grafting

Exposure to tobacco smoke in utero or during early childhood and risk of hypomania: prospective birth cohort study

Objectives: Using data from a prospective birth cohort, we aimed to test for an association between exposure to tobacco smoke in utero or during early development and the experience of hypomania assessed in young adulthood. Methods: We used data on 2957 participants from a large birth cohort (Avon longitudinal study of parents and children [ALSPAC]). The primary outcome of interest was hypomania, and the secondary outcome was “hypomania plus previous psychotic experiences (PE)”. Maternally-reported smoking during pregnancy, paternal smoking and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in childhood were the exposures of interest. Multivariable logistic regression was used and estimates of association were adjusted for socio-economic, lifestyle and obstetric factors. Results: There was weak evidence of an association between exposure to maternal smoking in utero and lifetime hypomania. However, there was a strong association of maternal smoking during pregnancy within the sub-group of individuals with hypomania who had also experienced psychotic symptoms (OR = 3.45; 95% CI: 1.49–7.98; P = 0.004). There was no association between paternal smoking, or exposure to ETS during childhood, and hypomania outcomes. Conclusions: Exposure to smoking in utero may be a risk factor for more severe forms of psychopathology on the mood-psychosis spectrum, rather than DSM-defined bipolar disorder

The use of natural fiber as reinforcement for composite materials provides several advantages such as low density, biodegradable, easily recycled, inexpensive, good mechanical properties, and renewable because it comes from nature. One of the natural fibers that can be used as reinforcement for polymer composites is gewang leaves. This study aims to analyze the tensile strength of a hybrid composite with gewang leaf chip and E-glass short fiber reinforcement. The tensile strength  of  61.25 Mpa and the stiffness modulus of 90.83 MPa produced by the E-glass fiber composite which is higher compared to the gewang leaf chip composite and the hybrid composite. The results showed that gewang leaf chip composite and the hybrid (gewang leaf chip + e-glass short fiber) can only be used for accessories applications such as car dashboards in the transportation industry that mechanical strength is not the prime factor

Using a Drone Formation with Sectored Antennas in Search-And-Rescue: Heuristics for Orienting Drones and Moving the Formation

    Get PDF
Recently there has been interest in using drones/unmanned aerial vehicles in search-and-rescue applications. Here we apply a formation of drones equipped with sectorised antennae to navigate to a transmitter using Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation to navigate. We present results indicating that the error of the DoA estimate is dependent on the DoA and evaluate a mitigation technique, finding that incrementally changing the drone orientation across the formation reduces the DoA estimation error. Further, we investigate a “dumbbell” formation in which the two “weights” generate independent DoA estimates, the difference between which are used to broadly classify the distance to the transmitter. We found that the choice of distance thresholds and relative direction of the transmitter substantially changes the performance of this distance heuristic
