Effective numbers of charge carriers in doped graphene: The generalized Fermi liquid approach
The single-band current-dipole Kubo formula for the dynamical conductivity of
heavily doped graphene from Kup\v{c}i\'{c} [Phys. Rev. B 91, 205428 (2015)] is
extended to a two-band model for conduction electrons in lightly doped
graphene. Using a posteriori relaxation-time approximation in the two-band
quantum transport equations, with two different relaxation rates and one
quasi-particle lifetime, we explain a seemingly inconsistent dependence of the
dc conductivity of ultraclean and dirty
lightly doped graphene samples on electron doping, in a way consistent with the
charge continuity equation. It is also shown that the intraband contribution to
the effective number of conduction electrons in vanishes at K in the ultraclean regime, but it remains finite in
the dirty regime. The present model is shown to be consistent with a picture in
which the intraband and interband contributions to are characterized by two different mobilities of conduction electrons,
the values of which are well below the widely accepted value of mobility in
ultraclean graphene. The dispersions of Dirac and plasmon resonances are
reexamined to show that the present, relatively simple expression for the
dynamical conductivity tensor can be used to study simultaneously
single-particle excitations in the dc and optical conductivity and collective
excitations in energy loss spectroscopy experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure
Minimum and maximum against k lies
A neat 1972 result of Pohl asserts that [3n/2]-2 comparisons are sufficient,
and also necessary in the worst case, for finding both the minimum and the
maximum of an n-element totally ordered set. The set is accessed via an oracle
for pairwise comparisons. More recently, the problem has been studied in the
context of the Renyi-Ulam liar games, where the oracle may give up to k false
answers. For large k, an upper bound due to Aigner shows that (k+O(\sqrt{k}))n
comparisons suffice. We improve on this by providing an algorithm with at most
(k+1+C)n+O(k^3) comparisons for some constant C. The known lower bounds are of
the form (k+1+c_k)n-D, for some constant D, where c_0=0.5, c_1=23/32=0.71875,
and c_k=\Omega(2^{-5k/4}) as k goes to infinity.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
starszych (65,9 ± 12,3 lat) i młodszych (26,9 ± 4,4 lat) mężczyzn. Czynnikami
wykluczającymi z badania były: zwężenia naczyń, hemodynamicznie istotne zaburzenia
rytmu serca, ciśnienie tętnicze krwi większe niż
160/90 mm Hg, wady zastawkowe i objawy niewydolności serca.
Materiał i metody: Stosując badanie USG oraz impulsową metodę dopplerowską,
prześledzono parametry przepływu krwi w tętnicach szyjnych: prędkość maksymalną
podczas skurczu (Vmax), prędkość średnią podczas całego
cyklu serca (Vmean), współczynnik pulsacji (PI), współczynnik
oporności (RI), czas narastania prędkości (Tn), czas obniżania
się prędkości (Tp), przyspieszenie narastania prędkości
(An) oraz zwalniania prędkości (Ap),
a w tętnicy szyjnej zewnętrznej - znamienny wzrost Vmax,
PI, RI i An oraz zmniejszenie Tn.
odczynowości obu odcinków łożyska naczyniowego mających początek we wspólnym

Proper acceleration, geometric tachyon and dynamics of a fundamental string near D branes
We present a detailed analysis of our recent observation that the origin of
the geometric tachyon, which arises when a D-brane propagates in the
vicinity of a stack of coincident NS5-branes, is due to the proper acceleration
generated by the background dilaton field. We show that when a fundamental
string (F-string), described by the Nambu-Goto action, is moving in the
background of a stack of coincident D-branes, the geometric tachyon mode can
also appear since the overall conformal mode of the induced metric for the
string can act as a source for proper acceleration. We also studied the
detailed dynamics of the F-string as well as the instability by mapping the
Nambu-Goto action of the F-string to the tachyon effective action of the
non-BPS D-string. We qualitatively argue that the condensation of the geometric
tachyon is responsible for the (F,D) bound state formation.Comment: 26 pages, v2: added references, v3: one ref. updated, to appear in

Non-Critical String Duals of N=1 Quiver Theories
We construct N=1 non-critical strings in four dimensions dual to strongly
coupled N=1 quiver gauge theories in the Coulomb phase, generalizing the string
duals of Argyres-Douglas points in N=2 gauge theories. They are the first
examples of superstrings vacua with an exact worldsheet description dual to
chiral N=1 theories. We identify the dual of the non-critical superstring using
a brane setup describing the field theory in the classical limit. We analyze
the spectrum of chiral operators in the strongly coupled regime and show how
worldsheet instanton effects give non-perturbative information about the gauge
theory. We also consider aspects of D-branes relevant for the holographic
duality.Comment: JHEP style; 40 pages, 3 figures; v2: minor corrections, refs added,

From Euclidean Geometry to Knots and Nets

The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/s11229-017-1558-x.This paper assumes the success of arguments against the view that informal mathematical proofs secure rational conviction in virtue of their relations with corresponding formal derivations. This assumption entails a need for an alternative account of the logic of informal mathematical proofs. Following examination of case studies by Manders, De Toffoli and Giardino, Leitgeb, Feferman and others, this paper proposes a framework for analysing those informal proofs that appeal to the perception or modification of diagrams or to the inspection or imaginative manipulation of mental models of mathematical phenomena. Proofs relying on diagrams can be rigorous if (a) it is easy to draw a diagram that shares or otherwise indicates the structure of the mathematical object, (b) the information thus displayed is not metrical and (c) it is possible to put the inferences into systematic mathematical relation with other mathematical inferential practices. Proofs that appeal to mental models can be rigorous if the mental models can be externalised as diagrammatic practice that satisfies these three conditions.Peer reviewe
Baldness/delocalization in intersecting brane systems
Marginally bound systems of two types of branes are considered, such as the
prototypical case of Dp+4 branes and Dp branes. As the transverse separation
between the two types of branes goes to zero, different behaviour occurs in the
supergravity solutions depending on p; no-hair theorems result for p<=1 only.
Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, these supergravity no-hair
results are understood as dual manifestations of the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner
theorem. Furthermore, the rates of delocalization for p<=1 are matched in a
scaling analysis. Talk given at ``Strings '99''; based on hep-th/9903213 with

Positive energy unitary irreducible representations of D=6 conformal supersymmetry
We give a constructive classification of the positive energy (lowest weight)
unitary irreducible representations of the D=6 superconformal algebras
osp(8*/2N). Our results confirm all but one of the conjectures of Minwalla (for
N=1,2) on this classification. Our main tool is the explicit construction of
the norms of the states that has to be checked for positivity. We give also the
reduction of the exceptional UIRs.Comment: 27 pages, TeX with harvmac, amssym.def, amssym.tex; v.2: minor

Prenatal treatment path for angelman syndrome and other neurodevelopmental disorders
Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutation or deletion of the maternally inherited UBE3A allele. These pathogenic mutations lead to loss of maternal UBE3A expression in neurons. Antisense oligonucleotides and gene therapies are in development, which activate the intact but epigenetically silenced paternal UBE3A allele. Preclinical studies indicate that treating during the prenatal period could greatly reduce the severity of symptoms or prevent AS from developing. Genetic tests can detect the chromosome 15q11-q13 deletion that is the most common cause of AS. New, highly sensitive noninvasive prenatal tests that take advantage of single-cell genome sequencing technologies are expected to enter the clinic in the coming years and make early genetic diagnosis of AS more common. Efforts are needed to identify fetuses and newborns with maternal 15q11-q13 deletions and to phenotype these babies relative to neurotypical controls. Clinical and parent observations suggest AS symptoms are detectable in infants, including reports of problems with feeding and motor function. Quantitative phenotypes in the 0- to 1-year age range will permit a more rapid assessment of efficacy when future treatments are administered prenatally or shortly after birth. Although prenatal therapies are currently not available for AS, prenatal testing combined with prenatal treatment has the potential to revolutionize how clinicians detect and treat babies before they are symptomatic. This pioneering prenatal treatment path for AS will lay the foundation for treating other syndromic neurodevelopmental disorders. Autism Res 2020, 13: 11–17. © 2019 International Society for Autism Research, Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lay summary: Prenatal treatment could benefit expectant parents whose babies test positive for the chromosome microdeletion that causes Angelman syndrome (AS). Prenatal treatment is predicted to have better outcomes than treating after symptoms develop and may even prevent AS altogether. This approach could generally be applied to the treatment of other syndromic neurodevelopmental disorders
