    S-Duality for D3-Brane in NS-NS and R-R Backgrounds

    We construct the low-energy effective field theory for a D3-brane in constant R-R 2-form potential background as the S-dual theory of a D3-brane in NS-NS B-field background. Despite the non-Abelian algebra of the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry, the electromagnetic duality transformation can be carried out to all orders, and the dual Lagrangian is given in a compact form. The gauge algebra is found to be a mixture of a deformed area-preserving diffeomorphism and the usual U(1) gauge symmetry.Comment: 29 pages, minor change

    Partition Function of Chiral Boson on 2-Torus from Floreanini-Jackiw Lagrangian

    We revisit the problem of quantizing a chiral boson on a torus. The conventional approach is to extract the partition function of a chiral boson from the path integral of a non-chiral boson. Instead we compute it directly from the chiral boson Lagrangian of Floreanini and Jackiw modified by topological terms involving auxiliary fields. A careful analysis of the gauge-fixing condition for the extra gauge symmetry reproduces the correct results for the free chiral boson, and has the advantage of being applicable to a wider class of interacting chiral boson theories.Comment: 31 pages, minor modificatio

    Clinical Features of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

    Background/PurposeEhlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by hyperextensibility of the skin, hypermobility of joints, and tissue fragility. This retrospective study analyzed the characteristics of patients with EDS.MethodsReview of medical records identified 16 cases of EDS during the study period from November 1997 to October 2002. Data on these patients, including clinical presentation, physical examinations, Beighton score, echocardiogram, bone mineral density findings and clinical classification, were analyzed.ResultsThe age of the patients ranged from 13 months to 36 years. All patients had skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility (Beighton score > 5 points), and tissue fragility. Complete bone mineral density study was performed in 11 patients and revealed that all had osteoporosis. Echocardiographic study was performed in 14 patients and showed aortic root dilatation/valve prolapse in 6/14 (43%). Other common features of EDS had the following prevalence: premature rupture of membranes in 3/16 (19%); prematurity in 3/16 (19%); neonatal hypotonia in 5/16 (31%); congenital hip dislocation in 3/16 (19%); unstable gait in 7/16 (44%); bone fracture(s) in 3/16 (19%); motor delay in 3/16 (19%); scoliosis in 3/16 (19%); short stature in 7/16 (44%); and positive family history in 8/16 (50%). All patients had a Beighton score of more than 5 points.ConclusionThe results of this study emphasize the importance of echocardiographic monitoring of aortic size and valvular condition, and assessment of bone mineral density in patients with EDS. Clinical evaluation and counseling should be undertaken prior to pregnancy in patients with EDS because of the risk from labor and vaginal delivery in patients with type IV and the inability to distinguish EDS subtypes in Taiwan due to the unavailability of biochemical assay or molecular mutation analysis as part of standard care

    Microwave-assisted extraction of pectin from jackfruit rinds using different power levels

    Pectin is a heterogeneous branched polysaccharide with complex structure. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is more efficient in extracting pectin compared to conventional method. The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of microwave-assisted pectin extraction against conventional extraction method. This study was also to investigate the effect of power level on yield and quality of extracted pectin from jackfruit rinds. Water-based extraction method was performed with the extraction duration for conventional extraction and MAE were 1 h and 10 min, respectively. The temperature of conventional extraction was set at 90°C and the power levels of MAE were 450 W, 600 W and 800 W. High yield of pectin was obtained from conventional extraction (14.59%) and MAE (16.72-17.63%). All quality characteristics determined were found to be insignificant different for pectin extracted from both conventional extraction and MAE except moisture and ash content. Increase in microwave power did not affect yield and quality characteristics of pectin from jackfruit rinds significantly. In conclusion, MAE requires shorter time than conventional extraction in extracting comparable amount and quality of pectin from jackfruit rinds. Microwave-assisted extraction at 450 W was the most effective and economic extraction condition among the different power levels tested

    The magneto-optical properties of bilayer phosphorene is investigated by the generalized tight-binding model and the gradient approximation. The vertical inter-Landau-level transitions, being sensitive to the polarization directions, are mainly determined by the spatial symmetries of sub-envelope functions on the distinct sublattices. The anisotropic excitations strongly depend on the electric and magnetic fields. A perpendicular uniform electric field could greatly diversify the selection rule, frequency, intensity, number and form of symmetric absorption peaks. Specifically, the unusual magneto-optical properties appear beyond the critical field as a result of two subgroups of Landau levels with the main and side modes. The rich and unique magneto-absorption spectra arise from the very close relations among the geometric structures, multiple intralayer and interlayer hopping integrals, and composite external fields

    Working Memory Capacity as a Factor Influencing the Relationship between Language Outcome and Rehabilitation in Mandarin-Speaking Preschoolers with Congenital Hearing Impairment

    Memory processes could account for a significant part of the variance in language performances of hearing-impaired children. However, the circumstance in which the performance of hearing-impaired children can be nearly the same as the performance of hearing children remains relatively little studied. Thus, a group of pre-school children with congenital, bilateral hearing loss and a group of pre-school children with normal hearing were invited to participate in this study. In addition, the hearing-impaired participants were divided into two groups according to their working memory span. A language disorder assessment test for Mandarin-speaking preschoolers was used to measure the outcomes of receptive and expressive language of the two groups of children. The results showed that the high-span group performed as good as the hearing group, while the low-span group showed lower accuracy than the hearing group. A linear mixed-effects analysis showed that not only length of rehabilitation but also the memory span affected the measure of language outcome. Furthermore, the rehabilitation length positively correlated with the measure of expressive language only among the participants of the high-span group. The pattern of the results indicates that working memory capacity is one of the factors that could support the children to acquire age-equivalent language skills
