The dynamics of the systems present in the Amazon require a detailed view of the aspects involving human actions and their consequent interactions with the forest. The impacts caused by this relationship have been the subject of numerous studies aimed at understanding the responsiveness to these impacts, risks, and vulnerabilities of the environment subject to risk factors. The general goal of this paper is to conduct a theoretical and conceptual study on resilience in the face of socioenvironmental impacts in the Brazilian Western Amazon. The specific goals are to contextualize the concepts of situational resilience in the face of environmental impacts, to address the main definitions of environmental impacts in the Amazon, and analyze the approach in the face of the Amazon environmental heritage. Regarding the problem, the following question was proposed: how is resilience characterized in the face of social and environmental impacts? In order to answer this question, a theoretical-conceptual review based on the Contingency Theory was conducted to support the conclusions. In order to reach this goal, we sought the conceptualization of resilience in the face of environmental impacts, the search for the main definitions of environmental impacts in the Brazilian Amazon and some concepts about the Amazonian environmental heritage in a qualitative approach by collecting data through qualitative research for further analysis of the problem and literature review, in order to build knowledge for the theoretical foundation using the Contingency Theory, which springs from environmental conditions to actions that minimize the impacts of human action

Paradigm of leadership for organizational innovation based on theory U

    Get PDF
Leadership paradigms are the attributes that a leader must possess for efficient and innovative leadership. Theory U is used as an argument in this discussion. The objective of this essay is to consider the paradigms of transformational leadership for the consolidation of a culture of innovation in the organization. This task of qualitative and exploratory research. The results of the present study suggest that consolidating a culture of innovation in the organization implies an impressive change in the modus operandi, with an open-minded team, also essential as a agent of change, led in an appropriate and creative environment. To make this possible, leadership must use the paradigms of transformational leadership as well as the culture-creativity-team trilogy. In addition, the change agent must disseminate the values of creativity and innovation in the everyday activities of the team, besides instigating internal actions that invigorate this culture

Environmental degradation is one of the most discussed topics today, but organizations also consider it a source of competitive advantage. This study is qualitative and uses the Case Study Method. Data were collected in a pest control company located in Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. As its main topic, it takes aspects of environmental management in a pest control company´s production process in the city of Porto Velho. Its specific goals are to (1) identify which tools and sustainable production methods are used by the company in its production process; (2) highlight the competitive advantages arising from the incorporation of aspects of environmental management in production processes; and (3) indicate the innovation process that best contributes to the improvement of the company´s environmental management. Assessing the environmental aspects of the company´s production management revealed satisfactory results. The company is engaged in sustainable development and is gradually pursuing improvements to its methods of maintaining and conserving the environment. The subsidies mentioned allow the degree of sustainability demanded by contemporary society, which benefits from the environmental services offered. This study is a university´s research contribution to managers and stakeholders who want to learn more about the applicability of concepts of an environmental management system in pest control companie

Wave Propagation Technology in Non-destructive assays for Wood Qualifying in Tropical Amazon

Non-destructive tests use techniques which allow a body to be evaluated without changing its physical, mechanical and dimensional features and without compromising its future use. Impulse tomography analysis is a non-destructive method which allows a piece of wood to be analyzed by passing mechanical waves through it, allowing researchers to evaluate its qualities in advance and detect the presence of defects. This research reports the assessment of the efficiency of impulse tomography as a technique for identifying defects and the in situ evaluation of tree wood from Amazonian timber species. The data were collected at INPA's Tropical Forestry Experimental Station (ZF-2), located at BR 174, Manaus/AM, in a plot 1 (one) hectare in size, where 7 species were chosen at random. For evaluation, the ARBOTOM pulse tomograph at DAP (diameter at breast height) was used to rapidly capture cross sectional images of the wood. Next, the trees were cut to evaluate cross sections of the wood by eye and samples were taken to determine the density of the wood. The results enabled researchers to detect the presence of distinct zones in the wood by varying the mechanical wave speed indicated by various colour zones revealed in the X-ray. These colour differences are attributable to variations in density related to the different wood substances in the tree. It was found that the wood density and mechanical wave velocity correlated with R² 0.647. The dynamic elastic modulus of the species studied was satisfactory, showing a good degree of resistance. Impulse tomography technique provides complete information and can assist forest managers to make a decision about tree felling that is guided by the assessment of the internal quality of the wood

SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF URBAN SOLID WASTE IN THE AMAZON

Inadequate disposal of urban solid waste (USW) contaminates the soil, groundwater, bodies of surface water and the atmosphere, due to the emission of polluting gases. It causes urban flooding due to the obstruction of storm-water drainage systems caused by accumulated USW. Carried by rainwater, it also, among other environmental events, affects the macro- and micro-climate, raising the local and global temperature. In this scenario the present study asks how innovation in the management of urban solid waste can contribute to social and environmental innovation. The general objective of this work was to study the management of USW in the Amazon sub-region, given the advent of social and environmental innovation. To obtain its results, it took the following as its specific objectives: (1) interpreting the current management of the USW of the sub region of interest; (2) describing the ultimate destination of the USW; and (3) proposing models of socioenvironmental innovation for the management of USW in the local sub-regions. The case study method was applied, using the necessary procedures. It was observed that the management of USW in the studied sub region is restricted to public power facilities, where it employs few processes or technologies. Regarding the final disposal of the USW, the municipalities have not instituted any separation of recyclables from waste products and hence they send all domestic and industrial waste to landfill sites as if nothing was recyclable. In addition, most municipalities continue to dump contaminants in their old sites, pending decisions to close them and ask responsible bodies to supervise them. This paper is an academic contribution to the improvement of waste management. It proposes innovative USW management practices, based on the principle that the Polluter Pays; initiatives that favour socioenvironmental innovation must be substantiated. This research is of interest to scholars working on sustainability and to managers concerned with issues related to socioenvironmental management
