Multiscale Fields of Patterns
We describe a framework for defining high-order image models that can be used
in a variety of applications. The approach involves modeling local patterns in
a multiscale representation of an image. Local properties of a coarsened image
reflect non-local properties of the original image. In the case of binary
images local properties are defined by the binary patterns observed over small
neighborhoods around each pixel. With the multiscale representation we capture
the frequency of patterns observed at different scales of resolution. This
framework leads to expressive priors that depend on a relatively small number
of parameters. For inference and learning we use an MCMC method for block
sampling with very large blocks. We evaluate the approach with two example
applications. One involves contour detection. The other involves binary

Vorticity and magnetic shielding in a type-II superconductor
We study in detail, solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the magnetic
field, supercurrent and order parameter profiles originated by a solenoid or
magnetic whisker inserted in a type-II superconductor. We consider solutions of
different vorticities, n, in the various cases. The results confirm the
connection between the vorticity, the internal currents and the boundstates in
a self-consistent way. The number of boundstates is given by the vorticity of
the phase of the gap function as in the case with no external solenoid. In the
limiting case of an infinitely thin solenoid, like a Dirac string, the solution
is qualitatively different. The quasiparticle spectrum and wave functions are a
function of n-n_ext, where n_ext is the vorticity of the solenoid. The flux is

This paper aims to explain the immediate causes of per capita income growth, the decline in income inequality and poverty reduction in five different geographic regions - Brazil, the Northeastern region, the state of Bahia, the metropolitan area of Salvador and nonmetropolitan areas of Bahia - between 2003 and 2011. More specifically, we assess whether these five regions followed the same general pattern and inquire about the sustainability of this process of pro-poor growth. Our results show that while income growth was higher in the poorer regions, it was generally driven by rising labor market earnings. The fall in income inequality, however, did not display such a clear-cut pattern: the richer regions experienced a larger decline in inequality, fostered mainly by the labor market, while the poorer regions became less unequal mostly due to the Programa Bolsa Família. Thus, both growth and redistribution contributed decisively to poverty reduction in Brazil and the metropolitan area of Salvador, but only income growth mattered in the other three regions. Therefore, the long-term prospects for pro-poor growth and poverty reduction in Brazil will hinge on a more equitable labor market in the Northeastern region and in the nonmetropolitan areas of Bahia
Foeniculum vulgare Essential Oils: Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities
The essential oils from Foeniculum vulgare commercial aerial parts and fruits were isolated by hydrodistillation, with different distillation times (30 min, I h, 2 h and 3 h), and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The antioxidant ability was estimated using four distinct methods. Antibacterial activity was determined by the agar diffusion method. Remarkable differences, and worrying from the quality and safety point of view, were detected in the essential oils. trans-Anethole (31-36%), alpha-pinene (14-20%) and limonene (11-13%) were the main components of the essentials oil isolated from F. vulgare dried aerial parts, whereas methyl chavicol (= estragole) (79-88%) was dominant in the fruit oils. With the DPPH method the plant oils showed better antioxidant activity than the fruits oils. With the TBARS method and at higher concentrations, fennel essential oils showed a pro-oxidant activity. None of the oils showed a hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity >50%, but they showed an ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase. The essential oils showed a very low antimicrobial activity. On the renormalization group flow of f(R)-gravity
We use the functional renormalization group equation for quantum gravity to
construct a non-perturbative flow equation for modified gravity theories of the
form . Based on this equation we show that certain
gravitational interactions monomials can be consistently decoupled from the
renormalization group (RG) flow and reproduce recent results on the asymptotic
safety conjecture. The non-perturbative RG flow of non-local extensions of the
Einstein-Hilbert truncation including and interactions is investigated in detail. The inclusion of
such interactions resolves the infrared singularities plaguing the RG
trajectories with positive cosmological constant in previous truncations. In
particular, in some -truncations all physical trajectories emanate from
a Non-Gaussian (UV) fixed point and are well-defined on all RG scales. The RG
flow of the -truncation contains an infrared attractor which drives a

Quintessence and the Swampland: The Parametrically Controlled Regime of Moduli Space
We provide evidence that slow roll is not possible in any parametrically controlled regime of the moduli space of string theory. This is proven in full generality in the asymptotic limit of the moduli space of type II and heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications for the dilaton and any number of Kähler moduli. Our results suggest that in order to build quintessence into string theory one must work in the interior of moduli space where numerical, even if not parametric, control could still be achieved
Supersymmetric Extension of the Quantum Spherical Model
In this work, we present a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical
model, both in components and also in the superspace formalisms. We find the
solution for short/long range interactions through the imaginary time formalism
path integral approach. The existence of critical points (classical and
