Inducing spin-dependent tunneling to probe magnetic correlations in optical lattices
We suggest a simple experimental method for probing antiferromagnetic spin
correlations of two-component Fermi gases in optical lattices. The method
relies on a spin selective Raman transition to excite atoms of one spin species
to their first excited vibrational mode where the tunneling is large. The
resulting difference in the tunneling dynamics of the two spin species can then
be exploited, to reveal the spin correlations by measuring the number of doubly
occupied lattice sites at a later time. We perform quantum Monte Carlo
simulations of the spin system and solve the optical lattice dynamics
numerically to show how the timed probe can be used to identify
antiferromagnetic spin correlations in optical lattices.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Antiferromagnetic noise correlations in optical lattices
We analyze how noise correlations probed by time-of-flight (TOF) experiments
reveal antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations of fermionic atoms in
two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) optical lattices. Combining
analytical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations using experimentally
realistic parameters, we show that AF correlations can be detected for
temperatures above and below the critical temperature for AF ordering. It is
demonstrated that spin-resolved noise correlations yield important information
about the spin ordering. Finally, we show how to extract the spin correlation
length and the related critical exponent of the AF transition from the noise.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The [Y/Mg] clock works for evolved solar metallicity stars
Previously [Y/Mg] has been proven to be an age indicator for solar twins.
Here, we investigate if this relation also holds for helium-core-burning stars
of solar metallicity. High resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)
spectroscopic data of stars in the helium-core-burning phase have been obtained
with the FIES spectrograph on the NOT 2.56m telescope and the HIRES
spectrograph on the Keck I 10 m telescope. They have been analyzed to determine
the chemical abundances of four open clusters with close to solar metallicity;
NGC 6811, NGC 6819, M67 and NGC 188. The abundances are derived from equivalent
widths of spectral lines using ATLAS9 model atmospheres with parameters
determined from the excitation and ionization balance of Fe lines. Results from
asteroseismology and binary studies were used as priors on the atmospheric
parameters, where especially the is determined to much higher
precision than what is possible with spectroscopy. It is confirmed that the
four open clusters are close to solar metallicity and they follow the [Y/Mg]
vs. age trend previously found for solar twins. The [Y/Mg] vs. age clock also
works for giant stars in the helium-core burning phase, which vastly increases
the possibilities to estimate the age of stars not only in the solar
neighborhood, but in large parts of the Galaxy, due to the brighter nature of

Equipment for placing a sustained release bolus in the rumen of reindeer
A pair of pliers were developed to place sustained release boli with a diameter of 18-20 mm and a length of 50-60 mm safely into the rumen of reindeer. The pliers are connected to a flexible, plastic coated steel tube terminating in a bronze headpiece. Inside this tube a polyfilament, stainless steel wire connects the pliers to an attachment screw in the headpiece. Before treatment the bolus is screwed on to this screw. After the bolus has been guided through the pharynx and oesophagus into the rumen, it is released by squeezing the pair of pliers which then retracts the attachment screw and allows the bolus to drop off. Spring loading of the attachment screw ensures retraction of the screw into the headpiece if the bolus is lost during the operation. The equipment has been used for treatment of more than 1000 reindeer.Utstyr for nedføring av tabletter i vomma på rein.Abstract in Norwegian / Sammendrag: Et nedleggingsutstyr for innføring av vomtabletter i vomma på rein blir beskrevet. Vomtablettene har en diameter på 18-20 mm og en lengde på 50-60 mm. Utstyret består av en tang som via en bøyelig, plastbelagt spiralwire er forbundet med et hodestykke i bronse. En polyfilament stålwire går inne i spiralwiren fra tangen til hodestykket hvor den ender i en festeskrue. For behandling skrues festeskruen inn i et hull i bakflaten av vomtabletten. Etter nedføring i vomma frigjøres tabletten ved at festeskruen med kraft fra tanga trekkes ut av tabletten. Fjærbelastning av festeskruen sikrer at skruen trekkes inn og beskyttes i hodestykket dersom tabletten mistes under behandling av urolige dyr. Det er behandlet ca 1000 rein med nedleggingsutstyret. En behandling med to tabletter tar 2-5 min. pr. dyr inkludert nedlegging og fiksering av dyret. 
Evaluation of the Single Kernel Characterization System (SKCS) for Measurement of Sorghum Grain Attributes
The single kernel characterization system (SKCS) has been widely used in the wheat industry, and SKCS parameters have been linked to end-use quality in wheat. The SKCS has promise as a tool for evaluating sorghum grain quality. However, the SKCS was designed to analyze wheat, which has a different kernel structure from sorghum. To gain a better understanding of the meaning of SKCS predictions for grain sorghum, individual sorghum grains were measured for length, width, thickness (diameter), and weight by laboratory methods and by the SKCS. SKCS predictions for kernel weight and thickness were highly correlated to laboratory measurements. However, SKCS predictions for kernel thickness were underestimated by ≈20%. The SKCS moisture prediction for sorghum was evaluated by tempering seven samples with varying hardness values to four moisture levels. The moisture contents predicted by SKCS were compared with a standard oven method and, while correlated, SKCS moisture predictions were less than moisture measured by air oven, especially at low moisture content. Finally, SKCS hardness values were compared with hardness measured by abrasive decortication. A moderate (r = 0.67, P \u3c 0.001) correlation was observed between the hardness measurements. The SKCS predictions of kernel weight and diameter were highly correlated with laboratory measurement. Moisture prediction, however, was substantially lower by the SKCS than as measured by an air oven method. The SKCS should be suitable for measuring sorghum grain attributes. Further research is needed to determine how SKCS hardness predictions are correlated to milling properties of sorghum grain
ClaimChain: Improving the Security and Privacy of In-band Key Distribution for Messaging
The social demand for email end-to-end encryption is barely supported by
mainstream service providers. Autocrypt is a new community-driven open
specification for e-mail encryption that attempts to respond to this demand. In
Autocrypt the encryption keys are attached directly to messages, and thus the
encryption can be implemented by email clients without any collaboration of the
providers. The decentralized nature of this in-band key distribution, however,
makes it prone to man-in-the-middle attacks and can leak the social graph of
users. To address this problem we introduce ClaimChain, a cryptographic
construction for privacy-preserving authentication of public keys. Users store
claims about their identities and keys, as well as their beliefs about others,
in ClaimChains. These chains form authenticated decentralized repositories that
enable users to prove the authenticity of both their keys and the keys of their
contacts. ClaimChains are encrypted, and therefore protect the stored
information, such as keys and contact identities, from prying eyes. At the same
time, ClaimChain implements mechanisms to provide strong non-equivocation
properties, discouraging malicious actors from distributing conflicting or
inauthentic claims. We implemented ClaimChain and we show that it offers
