Synchronization time in a hyperbolic dynamical system with long-range interactions
We show that the threshold of complete synchronization in a lattice of
coupled non-smooth chaotic maps is determined by linear stability along the
directions transversal to the synchronization subspace. We examine carefully
the sychronization time and show that a inadequate observation of the system
evolution leads to wrong results. We present both careful numerical experiments
and a rigorous mathematical explanation confirming this fact, allowing for a

Comment on ``Intermittent Synchronization in a Pair of Coupled Chaotic Pendula"
The main aim of this comment is to emphasize that the conditional Lyapunov
exponents play an important role in distinguishing between intermittent and
persistent synchronization, when the analytic criteria for asymptotic stability

Electronic circuit implementation of chaos synchronization
In this paper, an electronic circuit implementation of a robustly chaotic
two-dimensional map is presented. Two such electronic circuits are realized.
One of the circuits is configured as the driver and the other circuit is
configured as the driven system. Synchronization of chaos between the driver
and the driven system is demonstrated

Riprogettazione e ristrutturazione della stazione video di Stromboli e nuovo sistema di acquisizione e trasferimento immagini da Vulcano
La sorveglianza visiva dei vulcani attivi siciliani è una delle attività dell’unità funzionale monitoraggio Sistema Poseidon dell’INGV di Catania e consiste nel monitoraggio video continuo di detti vulcani mediante stazioni permanenti.
In questo lavoro è stata rappresentata l’opera di riprogettazione e ristrutturazione della stazione video di Stromboli posta in località “Il Pizzo Sopra la Fossa” in cima al vulcano Stromboli. Tale ristrutturazione è stata necessaria poiché il materiale della stazione video, ormai obsoleto e mal funzionante, non garantiva un servizio continuo, affidabile e qualitativamente accettabile.
Contemporaneamente è stato progettato e messo in opera al Centro Marcello Carapezza di Vulcano un nuovo sistema automatico di acquisizione, digitalizzazione, salvataggio su memoria di massa e trasferimento in internet ed in intranet delle immagini dei vulcani Stromboli e Vulcano. Ciò è stato effettuato utilizzando un software appositamente realizzato ed una linea trasmissione dati dedicata che hanno permesso di superare i continui inconvenienti nel trasferimento di tali immagini da Lipari
Rockfall Episodes from Visual and Seismic Data Analysis at Stromboli Volcano, Italy
On 30 December, 2002, huge subaerial and submarine landslides (Bonaccorso et al., 2003) occurred at Stromboli volcano, Italy, two days after a renewal of the effusive activity. As a consequence of the landslides and concurrent tsunami waves, which threatened the safety of the inhabitants of the island (Pino et al., 2004), the attention of the scientific community has been drawn on sliding processes affecting the instable
flanks of the Sciara del Fuoco in the western part of the volcano (e.g., Maiolino et al., 2004). We analyze rockfall episodes which have been continuing to occur despite the end of the lava effusion in July 2003. Particularly, we propose a comparative analysis of visual and seismic data recorded in 2004. Our data set encompasses records of the seismic network, along with concurrent visual images of permanent video cameras - in continuous acquisition - run by INGV, pointing from a site at 400 m above see level to the summit part of the volcano. Excluding night-time hours and days with bad weather conditions and/or when the vapor emission hindered the view, we find that only a few seismic traces refer to rockfall episodes which are not visible on the field. This finding allows us to explore the characteristics of the rockfalls in a new perspective, integrating visual and seismic data. Additionally, this comparative analysis sheds light on the sliding process, considering the material involved and possible cause-and-effect relationships with seismic-shaking and eruptive activity
Ensemble averageability in network spectra
The extreme eigenvalues of connectivity matrices govern the influence of the
network structure on a number of network dynamical processes. A fundamental
open question is whether the eigenvalues of large networks are well represented
by ensemble averages. Here we investigate this question explicitly and validate
the concept of ensemble averageability in random scale-free networks by showing
that the ensemble distributions of extreme eigenvalues converge to peaked
distributions as the system size increases. We discuss the significance of this
result using synchronization and epidemic spreading as example processes.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Implementing Intensive Family Preservation Services: A Case of Infidelity
The importance of treatment fidelity in evaluations of all human service programs, including intensive family preservation services (IFPS), is examined in this article. Special attention is focused on the issue of treatment fidelity in IFPS programs attempting to adhere to a specific program model (Homebuilders©), and on the problems that lack of treatment fidelity has caused for research that has been conducted on this and other program models. Attempts to address the issue of treatment fidelity in other program areas offer models for constructing treatment fidelity assessment tools for IFPS. The authors suggest a schema for assessing treatment fidelity in evaluations of IFPS programs that should help to explore relationships among different approaches to IFPS, the consistency with which they are being implemented, and the outcomes that result
Longitudinal Variability in Hydrochemistry and Zooplankton Community of a Large River: A Lagrangian‐Based Approach
The variability in water quality and zooplankton community structure during downstream transport was investigated in the Po river (Italy) using for the first time a Lagrangian sampling approach. Two surveys were conducted, one in spring under relatively high discharge levels, and one at low flows in summer. Twelve stations along a 332‐km stretch of the river’s lowland reach and four major tributaries were sampled. A hydrodynamic modelling system was used to determine water transport time along the river, with a satisfying fit between simulated and observed discharge values. No clear downstream trend in phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations was found. Conversely, a marked longitudinal decrease in dissolved silica supports the hypothesis of increasing downstream silica limitation during the phytoplankton growing season.In spring, at low residence time, no apparent plankton growth was observed during downstream transport. In summer, higher temperatures and lower turbulence and turbidity associated with longer residence time stimulated algal growth and in‐stream reproduction of fast‐growing rotifer taxa, with the gradual downstream development of a truly potamal assemblage and the increase of the ratio of euplanktonic to littoral/epibenthic rotifer taxa. Crustacean zooplankton density was generally low. The importance of biotic interactions within the zooplankton in driving community abundance and composition appeared to increase in the downstream direction, paralleled by a decrease in the influence of physical forcing. Tributary influence was especially evident where severe anthropogenic alterations of river hydrology and trophic status resulted in enhanced plankton growth, ultimately affecting zooplankton structure in the main river.
