Extragalactic Relativistic Jets and Nuclear Regions in Galaxies
Past years have brought an increasingly wider recognition of the ubiquity of
relativistic outflows (jets) in galactic nuclei, which has turned jets into an
effective tool for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies. A
brief summary is given here of recent results from studies of jets and nuclear
regions in several active galaxies with prominent outflows.Comment: 5 pages; contribution to ESO Astrophysical Symposia, "Relativistic

Compact jets as probes for sub-parsec scale regions in AGN
Compact relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei offer an effective tool
for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies. The emission
properties, dynamics, and evolution of jets in AGN are closely connected to the
characteristics of the central supermassive black hole, accretion disk and
broad-line region in active galaxies. Recent results from studies of the
nuclear regions in several active galaxies with prominent outflows are reviewed
in this contribution.Comment: AASLaTeX, 5 pages, 4 figures. Accepted in Astrophysics and Space

Active Galactic Nuclei at the Crossroads of Astrophysics
Over the last five decades, AGN studies have produced a number of spectacular
examples of synergies and multifaceted approaches in astrophysics. The field of
AGN research now spans the entire spectral range and covers more than twelve
orders of magnitude in the spatial and temporal domains. The next generation of
astrophysical facilities will open up new possibilities for AGN studies,
especially in the areas of high-resolution and high-fidelity imaging and
spectroscopy of nuclear regions in the X-ray, optical, and radio bands. These
studies will address in detail a number of critical issues in AGN research such
as processes in the immediate vicinity of supermassive black holes, physical
conditions of broad-line and narrow-line regions, formation and evolution of
accretion disks and relativistic outflows, and the connection between nuclear
activity and galaxy evolution.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures; review contribution; "Exploring the Cosmic

Beyond the Libet clock: modality variants for agency measurements
The Sense of Agency (SoA) refers to our capability to control our own actions and influence the world around us. Recent research in HCI has been exploring SoA to provide users an instinctive sense of “I did that” as opposed to “the system did that”. However, current agency measurements are limited. The Intentional Binding (IB) paradigm provides an implicit measure of the SoA. However, it is constrained by requiring high visual attention to a “Libet clock” onscreen. In this paper, we extend the timing stimulus through auditory and tactile cues. Our results demonstrate that audio timing through voice commands and haptic timing through tactile cues on the hand are alternative techniques to measure the SoA using the IB paradigm. They both address limitations of the traditional method (e.g., lack of engagement and visual demand). We discuss how our results can be applied to measure SoA in tasks involving different interactive scenarios common in HCI
Defining Haptic Experience: Foundations for Understanding, Communicating, and Evaluating HX
Haptic technology is maturing, with expectations and evidence that it will contribute to user experience (UX). However, we have very little understanding about how haptic technology can influence people’s experience. Researchers and designers need a way to understand, communicate, and evaluate haptic technology’s effect on UX. From a literature review and two studies – one with haptics novices, the other with expert hapticians – we developed a theoretical model of the factors that constitute a good haptic experience (HX). We define HX and propose its constituent factors: design parameters of Timeliness, Density, Intensity, and Timbre; the cross-cutting concern of Personalization; usability requirements of Utility, Causality, Consistency, and Saliency; and experiential factors of Harmony, Expressivity, Autotelics, Immersion, and Realism as guiding constructs important for haptic experience. This model will help guide design and research of haptic systems, inform language around haptics, and provide the basis for evaluative instruments, such as checklists, heuristics, or questionnaires. We acknowledge the support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), [funding
