    An Analysis of Extended Strings of Hits and Misses in a Mental Telepathy Task

    The current study was designed to reanalyze archival data from the Eastern Illinois University parapsychology lab to determine the frequency of strings of hits and misses. Four datasets were included in the analyses, comprising a total of 348 participants. It was hypothesized that there would be more strings of hits and/or misses than expected by chance; there would be a difference between the number of strings of hits and the number of strings of misses; and participant scores on a 7-point belief in psi scale would be related to the frequency of hits and misses. Results indicated that no significant variance from chance was found for strings of hits or strings of misses, nor was there a significant difference in the overall number of strings. However, when considering the effect of belief, high belief participants scored significantly more strings of hits while low belief participants scored significantly more strings of misses (strings of two: p = .0016; strings of three: p = .00014). The correlation between belief and psi task performance also increased with longer strings, but tapered off after five consecutive hits or misses. The results of the study suggest that categorizing participants by belief may be an important factor in obtaining significant experimental findings. Additionally, with regard to belief in luck, it is speculated that gamblers may in fact accurately perceive strings of good luck and bad luck, which may promote the desire to gamble

    Assessing the Production Scale and Research and Extension Needs of U.S. Hard Cider Producers

    At CiderCON 2013 and 2014, we assessed the scale of current and projected production, as well as the research and Extension needs of cider apple growers and cider makers. Our findings show that cider producers are diverse in terms of geographic location, scale of operation, and experience. These stakeholders reported a great need for technical assistance from Extension professionals and were interested in having information delivered in a wide range of different platforms. We also found audience response devices to be effective at quickly gathering and analyzing data from a large number of participants

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture May 2004The first of two studies undertaken in this thesis analyzed Washington State?s organic apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) exports to the European Union (EU) as a case study of the internationalization of the organic marketplace. Washington?s organic apple plantings have grown exponentially and as a result price premiums, which traditionally offset the greater costs of production and motivated many Washington growers to certify their apple orchards, have shrunk. At the same time, demand for organic apples in the EU has been outpacing production, thus making EU member states the most important export market for Washington?s organic apples. However, an entanglement of regulatory bodies from around the world are involved in the certification of organic products, therefore making international sales very difficult. In this paper, I explored the expansion in the organic marketplace and the adjustments undertaken by growers, marketers, and regulatory agencies. As part of a long-term comparison of organic, conventional, and integrated apple farm management systems in the Yakima Valley of Washington State, the second study investigated the productivity and fruit quality of ?Gala? apples during the ninth and tenth growing seasons. We found that the technology available for the organic system limited suitable crop load management and, therefore, consistent yields. Pest and weed control and fertility management were more difficult to manage in the organic system, as they all appeared to contribute to its limited productivity. However, organic apples had 6-10 N higher flesh firmness than conventional apples, and 4-7 N higher firmness than integrated apples. Additionally, consumers consistently rated organic apples to be firmer and to have better textural properties. Few consistent results were found for fruit flavor as measured by soluble solids concentration or titratable acidity, and this was also reflected in consumer panels. Total antioxidant activity was 10-15% higher in organic apples than conventional apples and 5-12% higher than integrated apples. The conventional and integrated apple farm management systems were more similar to each other than either was to the organic system throughout this study. Although organic apple production provided more management challenges than conventional systems, the superior quality of organic apples was a notable finding

    Rion – Antirion Bridge Foundations: A Blend of Design and Construction Innovation

    This case history discusses the design and construction of the appropriate foundation scheme for the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. This concession project was financed through a combination of public funds, private equity and bank loans. When completed in 2004, the Rion-Antirion Bridge will connect the Peloponnese, Greece’s southernmost peninsula, with the mainland across the Gulf of Corinth. Alternative foundation concepts that were considered included traditional driven piles, deeply embedded caissons, and soil improvement. The process of how the foundation evolved from schematics to final design, what were the driving forces, how ideas were disseminated among the Design Team, the Design Checker and the Technical Advisors, and the performance of the foundations to date are summarized

    Lobe Advance Velocities in the Extragalactic Compact Symmetric Object 4C 31.04

    We report on the results of a two epoch study of the low power Compact Symmetric Object 4C 31.04. Observations performed with the VLBA at 5 GHz in 1995 and 2000 have yielded images of this source at milliarcsecond angular resolution. A central core is detected, with bright compact hot spots and extended lobes on both sides. Model-fitting and other analysis of the data (brightness profile, difference map) clearly indicate that the source is expanding. We estimate the velocity of this expansion to be (0.085 +/- 0.016) mas/yr, i.e. (0.33 +/- 0.06) c in both hot spots. Assuming a constant expansion velocity, we estimate the kinematic age of the source at 550 yrs. We also study the spectral index using VLBA observations at 1.3 GHz and MERLIN at 22 GHz. The derived spectral age is 3000-5000 years in equipartition conditions. The two estimates are discussed and found to be in agreement, given present uncertainties.Comment: 9 pages, 8 .eps figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    The National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anesthesia Plan (NSOAP): Recognition and Definition of an Empirically Evolving Global Surgery Systems Science Comment on “Global Surgery – Informing National Strategies for Scaling Up Surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa”

    bstract In 2015, the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCoGS) working groups developed a National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anesthesia Plan (NSOAP) framework to guide national surgical system development globally predicated on six data points (indicators) which can assess surgical systems. Zambia as well as other subSaharan Africa (SSA) countries have forged ahead in designing and implementing interventions based on LCoGS indicators collected to inform NSOAP. Concurrently, the Zambian team and others have recognized the need for rigorous scientific inquiry to assess and iteratively improve upon the NSOAP process and outputs. Based on the Zambian experience, as well as that of ours in Colombia, we have identified “core principles” through convergent works which inform a scientific framework through which NSOAP can be evaluated. We propose that when contextualized, participatory action research (PAR) and dissemination and implementation science are methodologies upon which a robust framework can be developed to achieving objective and iterative NSOAP evaluation, and ultimately universal health coverage as envisioned by the World Health Organization (WHO)
