The 'Irish' , the 'Scots-Irish' and the United States of America in the Twentieth Century : Some Patterns of Exchange

Historical interactions between the island of Ireland and the United States are represented in academic literature in connections between both the "Irish" and the "Ulster-Scots" (or "Scots-Irish" or "Scotch-Irish") and America. This paper will attempt a comparison, suggesting in particular the similar relationship between dominant constructions of Irish and Ulster-Scots identities and aspects of American nationalism.Les interactions historiques entre l'Irlande et les États-Unis sont représentées dans les travaux des historiens sous la forme de connections entre les «Irlandais » et les Etats-Unis d'une part et entre les «Ulster-Scots » (les «Scots-Irish », ou encore, les «Scotch-Irish ») et les Etats-Unis d'autre part.
