    SPAR improved structure/fluid dynamic analysis capability

    The capability of analyzing a coupled dynamic system of flowing fluid and elastic structure was added to the SPAR computer code. A method, developed and adopted for use in SPAR utilizes the existing assumed stress hybrid plan element in SPAR. An operational mode was incorporated in SPAR which provides the capability for analyzing the flaw of a two dimensional, incompressible, viscous fluid within rigid boundaries.     Postbuckling behaviour of beams with discrete nonlinear restraints

    A beam with nonlinearly ‐ elastic lateral restraints attached at discrete points along its span is investigated via analytical and numerical methods. Previous results for the critical moment and the deflected shape based on an eigenvalue analysis of a similar beam with linearly ‐ elastic restraints are discussed, along with a validation of these results against an equivalent finite element model and results from numerical continuation. A beam with nonlinearly ‐ elastic restraints is then analysed with treatments for both quadratic and cubic restraint force–displacement relationships being provided. After formulation of the potential energy functionals, the governing differential equations of the system are derived via the calculus of variations and appropriate boundary conditions are applied. The equations are then solved using the numerical continuation software AUTO ‐ 07p for a standard I ‐ section beam. The variation in elastic critical buckling moment with the linear component of the restraint stiffness is tracked via a two ‐ parameter numerical continuation, allowing determination of the stiffness values at which the critical buckling modes changes qualitatively. Using these stiffness values, subsequent analyses are conducted to examine the influence of the nonlinear component of the restraint stiffness, from which post ‐ buckling equilibrium paths and deformation modes are extracted. The results of these analyses are then compared with an equivalent Rayleigh–Ritz formulation whereby the displacement components are represented by Fourier series. Equilibrium equations are derived by minimizing the potential energy functional with respect to the amplitudes of the constituent harmonics of the Fourier series. The amplitudes are solved for in the post ‐ buckling range by AUTO ‐ O7p and equilibrium paths are produced and compared to the equivalent solutions of the differential equations, with good agreement observed

    Extracting quantum dynamics from genetic learning algorithms through principal control analysis

    Genetic learning algorithms are widely used to control ultrafast optical pulse shapes for photo-induced quantum control of atoms and molecules. An unresolved issue is how to use the solutions found by these algorithms to learn about the system's quantum dynamics. We propose a simple method based on covariance analysis of the control space, which can reveal the degrees of freedom in the effective control Hamiltonian. We have applied this technique to stimulated Raman scattering in liquid methanol. A simple model of two-mode stimulated Raman scattering is consistent with the results.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     A New Component in the Radio Continua of PNe

    A byproduct of experiments designed to map the CMB is the recent detection of a new component of foreground galactic emission. The anomalous foreground at 10–30 GHz, unexplained by traditional emission mechanisms, correlates with 100 mum dust emission, and is thus presumably due to dust.Is the anomalous foreground ubiquitous in the Galaxy? I will present evidence obtained with the CBI and SIMBA+SEST supporting the existence of the new component in the ISM at large, and in specific objects, in the form of a 31 GHz excess over free-free emission in PNe

    A hybrid-stress finite element for linear anisotropic elasticity

    Standard assumed displacement finite elements with anisotropic material properties perform poorly in complex stress fields such as combined bending and shear and combined bending and torsion. A set of three dimensional hybrid-stress brick elements were developed with fully anisotropic material properties. Both eight-node and twenty-node bricks were developed based on the symmetry group theory of Punch and Atluri. An eight-node brick was also developed using complete polynomials and stress basis functions and reducing the order of the resulting stress parameter matrix by applying equilibrium constraints and stress compatibility constraints. Here the stress compatibility constraints must be formulated assuming anisotropic material properties. The performance of these elements was examined in numerical examples covering a broad range of stress distributions. The stress predictions show significant improvement over the assumed displacement elements but the calculation time is increased

    A multi-wavelength view of galaxy evolution with AKARI

    AKARI's all-sky survey resolves the far-infrared emission in many thousands of nearby galaxies, providing essential local benchmarks against which the evolution of high-redshift populations can be measured. This review presents some recent results in the resolved galaxy populations, covering some well-known nearby targets, as well as samples from major legacy surveys such as the Herschel Reference Survey and the JCMT Nearby Galaxies Survey.
