Relational pedagogy for student engagement and success at university
The Australian Government's policy to transform higher education by 2020 includes plans to significantly raise the levels of undergraduate enrolment by people of low socio-economic status. In light of this policy direction, this article examines how a group of undergraduate students of low socio-economic status work to maintain their desire for learning and to remain included in the university system despite experiencing cultural processes of exclusion. As the students reflect on the cultural and pedagogical conditions that promote, support and enhance their participation and engagement in higher education, a picture emerges of the importance of students' relationships with academics. Whilst positive relationships help students to remain engaged, negative experiences work against continuing participation and engagement. Given the desire of the Australian government to increase participation in higher education by students from under-represented groups, this research identifies some challenges and possibilities for both universities and academics
A marine environmental monitoring and assessment program
The need for the use of modern, extremely sensitive techniques to aid in rapidly and synoptically assessing the relative health and production of coastal waters and estuaries is reported. Major emphasis is placed on establishing a solid foundation for the use of remote sensing in basic oceanographic studies and the management of human wastes
On the structure of the scalar mesons and
We investigate the structure of the scalar mesons and
within realistic meson-exchange models of the and
interactions. Starting from a modified version of the J\"ulich model for
scattering we perform an analysis of the pole structure of the
resulting scattering amplitude and find, in contrast to existing models, a
somewhat large mass for the ( MeV,
MeV). It is shown that our model provides a description of
data comparable in quality with those of
alternative models. Furthermore, the formalism developed for the
system is consistently extended to the interaction leading to a
description of the as a dynamically generated threshold effect
(which is therefore neither a conventional state nor a
bound state). Exploring the corresponding pole position the
is found to be rather broad ( MeV,
MeV). The experimentally observed smaller width results from the influence of
the nearby threshold on this pole.Comment: 25 pages, 15 Postscript figure
Rocket measurement of nitric oxide between 60 and 96 kilometers
Nitric oxide airglow in gamma bands measured by sounding rocket
Direct measurements of the polarization of terrestrial kilometric radiation from Voyagers 1 and 2
Terrestrial radiation measurements obtained with planetary radio astronomy experiments on Voyager-1 and 2 during the early portions of each flight show the signals to be predominantly left-hand circularly polarized. Since these emissions were most probably generated above the Northern Hemisphere auroral zone, it is concluded that the radiation is emitted primarily in the extraordinary mode
Simulation of associative learning with the replaced elements model
Associative learning theories can be categorised according to whether they treat the representation of stimulus compounds in an elemental or configural manner. Since it is clear that a simple elemental approach to stimulus representation is inadequate there have been several attempts to produce more elaborate elemental models. One recent approach, the Replaced Elements Model (Wagner, 2003), reproduces many results that have until recently been uniquely predicted by Pearce’s Configural Theory (Pearce, 1994). Although it is possible to simulate the Replaced Elements Model using “standard” simulation programs the generation of the correct stimulus representation is complex. The current paper describes a method for simulation of the Replaced Elements Model and presents the results of two example simulations that show differential predictions of Replaced Elements and Pearce’s Configural Theor
Saffron thistle
Saffron thistle is a declared primary noxious weed in Western Australia and is especially troublesome in the northern agricultural areas.
Field trials aimed at finding the cheapest and most effective method of controlling the weed have shown that 2,4-D applied at the correct stage is the best chemical to use
The Heat Capacity and the Free Energy Formation of Naphthalene
Because of work in project it became necessary to determine the heat capacity of compounds and solutions at low temperatures. To test the apparatus and method we have determined the heat capacity of napthalene at temperatures from liquid air to 25°
The control of annual (Wimmera) ryegrass in cereal crops
The annual ryegrasses are valuable pasture plants in Western Australia, yet have become one of the major weed problems in cereal crops.
The key to cultural control of annual ryegrasses in cereal crops is an understanding of the factors which govern germination of the seed.
Covering the seed with soil keeps out light and provides a more stable moisture supply, bringing about a faster rate of germination. This is the basis of control programmes recommended in this article.
Recommendations for chemical control are also included
Refined conformal spectra in the dimer model
Working with Lieb's transfer matrix for the dimer model, we point out that
the full set of dimer configurations may be partitioned into disjoint subsets
(sectors) closed under the action of the transfer matrix. These sectors are
labelled by an integer or half-integer quantum number we call the variation
index. In the continuum scaling limit, each sector gives rise to a
representation of the Virasoro algebra. We determine the corresponding
conformal partition functions and their finitizations, and observe an
intriguing link to the Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz sectors of the critical dense
polymer model as described by a conformal field theory with central charge
