Magnetic tight-binding and the iron-chromium enthalpy anomaly
We describe a self consistent magnetic tight-binding theory based in an
expansion of the Hohenberg-Kohn density functional to second order, about a non
spin polarised reference density. We show how a first order expansion about a
density having a trial input magnetic moment leads to the Stoner--Slater rigid
band model. We employ a simple set of tight-binding parameters that accurately
describes electronic structure and energetics, and show these to be
transferable between first row transition metals and their alloys. We make a
number of calculations of the electronic structure of dilute Cr impurities in
Fe which we compare with results using the local spin density approximation.
The rigid band model provides a powerful means for interpreting complex
magnetic configurations in alloys; using this approach we are able to advance a
simple and readily understood explanation for the observed anomaly in the

The stabilizing role of itinerant ferromagnetism in inter-granular cohesion in iron
We present a simple, general energy functional for ferromagnetic materials
based upon a local spin density extension to the Stoner theory of itinerant
ferromagnetism. The functional reproduces well available ab initio results and
experimental interfacial energies for grain boundaries in iron. The model shows
that inter-granular cohesion along symmetric tilt boundaries in iron is
dependent upon strong magnetic structure at the interface, illuminates the
mechanisms underlying this structure, and provides a simple explanation for

Star Formation Histories of the LEGUS Dwarf Galaxies (I): recent History of NGC1705, NGC4449 and Holmberg II
We use HST observations from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey to
reconstruct the recent star formation histories (SFHs) of three actively
star-forming dwarf galaxies, NGC4449, Holmberg II and NGC1705, from their UV
color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We apply a CMD fitting technique using two
independent sets of stellar isochrones, PARSEC-COLIBRI and MIST, to assess the
uncertainties related to stellar evolution modelling. Irrespective of the
adopted stellar models, all the three dwarfs are found to have had almost
constant star formation rates (SFRs) in the last 100-200 Myr, with modest
enhancements (a factor of 2) above the 100 Myr-averaged-SFR. Significant
differences among the three dwarfs are found in the overall SFR, the timing of
the most recent peak and the SFRarea. The Initial Mass Function (IMF) of
NGC1705 and Holmberg II is consistent with a Salpeter slope down to 5
M, whereas it is slightly flatter, s, in NGC4449. The SFHs
derived with the two different sets of stellar models are consistent with each
other, except for some quantitative details, attributable to their input
assumptions. They also share the drawback that all synthetic diagrams predict a
clear separation in color between upper main sequence and helium burning stars,
which is not apparent in the data. Since differential reddening, significant in
NGC4449, or unresolved binaries don't appear to be sufficient to fill the gap,
we suggest this calls for a revision of both sets of stellar evolutionary

Boron in copper: a perfect misfit in the bulk and cohesion enhancer at a grain boundary
Our ab initio study suggests that boron segregation to the Sigma 5(310)[001]
grain boundary should strengthen the boundary up to 1.5 ML coverage (15.24
at/nm^2). The maximal effect is observed at 0.5 ML and corresponds to boron
atoms filling exclusively grain boundary interstices. In copper bulk, B causes
significant distortion both in interstitial and regular lattice sites for which
boron atoms are either too big or too small. The distortion is compensated to
large extent when the interstitial and substitutional boron combine together to
form a strongly bound dumbell. Our prediction is that bound boron impurities
should appear in sizable proportion if not dominate in most experimental
conditions. A large discrepancy between calculated heats of solution and
experimental terminal solubility of B in Cu is found, indicating either a sound
failure of the local density approximation or, more likely, strongly
overestimated solubility limits in the existing B-Cu phase diagram.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure
Comprehensive study of the magnetic stars HD 5797 and HD 40711 with large chromium and iron overabundances
We present the results of a comprehensive study of the chemically peculiar
stars HD 5797 and HD 40711. The stars have the same effective temperature, Teff
= 8900 K, and a similar chemical composition with large iron (+1.5 dex) and
chromium (+3 dex) overabundances compared to the Sun. The overabundance of
rare-earth elements typically reaches +3 dex. We have measured the magnetic
field of HD 5797. The longitudinal field component Be has been found to vary
sinusoidally between -100 and +1000 G with a period of 69 days. Our estimate of
the evolutionary status of the stars suggests that HD 5797 and HD 40711, old
objects with an age t \approx 5 \times 108 yr, are near the end of the core

The tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) belongs to a family of proteins which are composed of one immunogiobulin variable domain and a varying number of immunoglobulin constant-like domains. Most of the membrane-bound members, which are anchored either by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol moiety or a transmembrane domain, have been shown to convey cell adhesion in vitro. Here we describe two splice variants of CGMI. a transmembrane member of the CEA family without immunoglobulin constant.like domains. CGM1a and CGM1c contain cytopiasmic domains of 71 and 31 amino acids, respectively, The cytoplasmic region of CGM1a is encoded by four exons (Cyt1-Cyt4). Quantifying neutralising antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2 in dried blood spots (DBS) and paired sera
The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was initially managed by non-pharmaceutical interventions such as diagnostic testing, isolation of positive cases, physical distancing and lockdowns. The advent of vaccines has provided crucial protection against SARS-CoV-2. Neutralising antibody (nAb) responses are a key correlate of protection, and therefore measuring nAb responses is essential for monitoring vaccine efficacy. Fingerstick dried blood spots (DBS) are ideal for use in large-scale sero-surveillance because they are inexpensive, offer the option of self-collection and can be transported and stored at ambient temperatures. Such advantages also make DBS appealing to use in resource-limited settings and in potential future pandemics. In this study, nAb responses in sera, venous blood and fingerstick blood stored on filter paper were measured. Samples were collected from SARS-CoV-2 acutely infected individuals, SARS-CoV-2 convalescent individuals and SARS-CoV-2 vaccinated individuals. Good agreement was observed between the nAb responses measured in eluted DBS and paired sera. Stability of nAb responses was also observed in sera stored on filter paper at room temperature for 28 days. Overall, this study provides support for the use of filter paper as a viable sample collection method to study nAb responses
The Blue Stragglers of the Old Open Cluster NGC 188
The old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188 has yielded a wealth of astrophysical
insight into its rich blue straggler population. Specifically, the NGC 188 blue
stragglers are characterized by: A binary frequency of 80% for orbital periods
less than days;Typical orbital periods around 1000 days;Typical
secondary star masses of 0.5 M; At least some white dwarf companion
stars; Modestly rapid rotation; A bimodal radial spatial distribution;
Dynamical masses greater than standard stellar evolution masses (based on
short-period binaries); Under-luminosity for dynamical masses (short-period
binaries). Extensive -body modeling of NGC 188 with empirical initial
conditions reproduces the properties of the cluster, and in particular the
main-sequence solar-type binary population. The current models also reproduce
well the binary orbital properties of the blue stragglers, but fall well short
of producing the observed number of blue stragglers. This deficit could be
resolved by reducing the frequency of common-envelope evolution during Roche
lobe overflow. Both the observations and the -body models strongly indicate
that the long-period blue-straggler binaries - which dominate the NGC 188 blue
straggler population - are formed by asymptotic-giant (primarily) and red-giant
mass transfer onto main sequence stars. The models suggest that the few
non-velocity-variable blue stragglers formed from mergers or collisions.
Several remarkable short-period double-lined binaries point to the importance
of subsequent dynamical exchange encounters, and provide at least one example
