The Role of Remotely Sensed and Relayed Data in the Delaware River Basin

    Get PDF
The planned integration of the existing water quality monitoring and data processing systems in the Delaware River Basin with a data relay experiment proposed for the ERTS-1 is discussed. The experiment is designed to use ERTS-1 as a data relay link for a maximum of 20 hydrologic stations in the basin, including stream gaging, reservoir level, ground water level, and water quality monitoring stations. This experiment has the potential for reducing the time lag between data collection and dissemination to less than 12 hours. The experiment will also provide impetus to develop an operational system of real time data processing and dissemination to handle the large quantity of data that will be obtained from the stations in the basin. The results of this experiment will demonstrate the relative merits of satellite relay of data versus conventional means of data telemetry and will provide a basis for the development of operational satellite relay of hydrologic data

Regeneration experiments below 10K in a regenerative-cycle cryocooler

    Get PDF
At temperatures below 10K, regenerative cycle cryocoolers are limited by regeneration losses in the helium working fluid which result from the decreasing heat capacity of the regenerating material and the increasing density of helium. Experiments examining several approaches to improving the low-temperature regeneration in a four-stage regenerative cycle cooler constructed primarily of fiberglass materials are discussed. Using an interchangeable fourth stage, the experiments included configurations with multiple regeneration passages, and a static helium volume for increased heat capacity. Experiments using helium-3 as the working fluid and a Malone stage are planned. Results indicate that, using these techniques, it should be possible to construct a regenerative cycle cooler which will operate below 6K

Investigation Of Microstructural Alterations In M50 And 52100 Steel Using Nanoindentation

    Get PDF
Bearing steels are used in rolling elements and are designed to withstand heavy loads for an extended period of time. At the end of life, microstructural alterations within the material have been observed and are linked to failure. In this study, a three ball-on-rod fatigue tester was used to test M50 and 52100 steel cylindrical rods at differing loads of 4.0 GPa, 4.5 GPa, and 5.0 GPa and in lubricated and unlubricated conditions to 10 8 cycles in an attempt to produce microstructural alterations. Microstructural alterations characterized as butterflies were observed and investigated further in two M50 samples that were tested at 4.5 GPa to 10 8 cycles in the lubricated and unlubricated condition. Microstructural alterations characterized as dark etching regions (DER), and white etching bands (WEBs) were not observed. Additionally, hardness was investigated cross sectionally as a function of depth and location within the wear track produced by the fatigue test. No conclusive evidence was derived from the hardness measurements as a function of depth in relation to the formation of microstructural alterations or the stress experienced subsurface within the material. Hardness measurements performed specifically within a butterfly wing, however, returned hardness values significantly higher than the matrix hardness values

Recognizing, Empathizing, And Strategizing Tools For Teachers And Schools To Increase Academic Success For Homeless Highly Mobile (HHM) Students

    Get PDF
The homeless highly mobile (HHM) student population can easily be overlooked and begin to fall through the cracks within the school system. As a result, the achievement gap for this vulnerable population has grown at a disproportionate rate. Because of this, the author’s research question was: How can schools streamline academic success for homeless highly mobile (HHM) students? An examination of existing studies and literature demonstrates that the issue of the HHM student population having an achievement gap can be seen in schools across the country. However, research does show that there are strategies and resources for schools to implement, so that HHM students have their needs met and become more successful in their academics. A professional development (PD) series was created for teachers and schools to recognize their HHM students, empathize with them, then come up with a strategy to increase their academic performance overall
