    Cognitive Skills, Non-Cognitive Skills, and the Employment and Wages of Young Adults in Rural China

    The objective of this paper is to examine whether noncognitive skills explain differences in employment status and hourly wages even after controlling for age, experience, schooling and cognitive skills. Of particular interest is to examine the relative magnitudes of the impacts of the cognitive and noncognitive skills on these labor market outcomes. Data used in this paper come from the Gansu Survey of Children and Families (GSCF), which followed a random sample of 2,000 children in rural areas of Gansu Province who were 9-12 years old in the year 2000. Three waves of surveys were completed in 2000, 2004, and 2007-2009.     Predictive Duty Cycle Adaptation for Wireless Camera Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) typically employ dynamic duty cycle schemes to efficiently handle different patterns of communication traffic in the network. However, existing duty cycling approaches are not suitable for event-driven WSN, in particular, camera-based networks designed to track humans and objects. A characteristic feature of such networks is the spatially-correlated bursty traffic that occurs in the vicinity of potentially highly mobile objects. In this paper, we propose a concept of indirect sensing in the MAC layer of a wireless camera network and an active duty cycle adaptation scheme based on Kalman filter that continuously predicts and updates the location of the object that triggers bursty communication traffic in the network. This prediction allows the camera nodes to alter their communication protocol parameters prior to the actual increase in the communication traffic. Our simulations demonstrate that our active adaptation strategy outperforms TMAC not only in terms of energy efficiency and communication latency, but also in terms of TIBPEA, a QoS metric for event-driven WSN

    A Parallel Histogram-based Particle Filter for Object Tracking on SIMD-based Smart Cameras

    We present a parallel implementation of a histogram-based particle filter for object tracking on smart cameras based on SIMD processors. We specifically focus on parallel computation of the particle weights and parallel construction of the feature histograms since these are the major bottlenecks in standard implementations of histogram-based particle filters. The proposed algorithm can be applied with any histogram-based feature sets—we show in detail how the parallel particle filter can employ simple color histograms as well as more complex histograms of oriented gradients (HOG). The algorithm was successfully implemented on an SIMD processor and performs robust object tracking at up to 30 frames per second—a performance difficult to achieve even on a modern desktop computer

    Palliative stenting for oesophagogastric cancer: tumour and host factors and prognosis

    Objectives: Palliative self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) insertion is common in patients not suitable for resection of oesophagogastric (OG) cancer. Factors which may determine survival, however, are not clear. The present study examined the relationship between tumour and host factors, including the systemic inflammatory response and survival of patients undergoing palliative SEMS insertion. Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of OG cancer who were considered suitable for palliative SEMS only without systemic therapy were identified. Patient characteristics including Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, radiological stage and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS: 0—C-reactive protein (CRP) ≀10 mg/L; 1—CRP >10 mg/L; 2—CRP >10 mg/L; albumin <35 g/L) were recorded prospectively. The relationship between such characteristics and 3-month survival was examined. Results: 203 patients were included in the final analysis. All patients died during follow-up, with median survival from diagnosis 75 days (IQR 47–157). 78% of patients were systemically inflamed (mGPS >1). On multivariate analysis, only poor performance status (HR 1.23, p=0.025), metastatic disease (HR 2.27, p<0.001) and mGPS (HR 1.25, p=0.021) were associated with shorter survival. The combination of performance status and mGPS stratified 3-month survival of patients without metastatic disease from 88% to 20% (p<0.001) and patients with metastases from 43% to 6% (p=0.059). Similar results were observed when analysis was restricted to patients with oesophageal and junctional cancer (M0: 83%–20%, p=0.008; M1: 33%–8%, p=0.082). Conclusion: Performance status, metastatic disease and mGPS are independent predictors of survival in patients with OG cancer undergoing palliative SEMS insertion. These routinely available markers provide a rational system on which to base decisions regarding prognosis and treatment

    GENERATION OF RECYCLABLES BY RURAL HOUSEHOLDS

    Rising landfill costs have forced solid waste managers to consider ways to reduce the waste stream. Using survey data, models explaining the weight of recyclables generated by households are estimated for paper and glass. Results indicate that households respond to the time cost of recycling paper but not glass. The waste generation models imply total monthly willingness to pay for recycling is $5.78 per household. Waste managers may increase the weight of recycled waste stream with programs which lower perceived time costs of nonrecyclers and improve the efficiency of recyclers.Consumer/Household Economics, Environmental Economics and Policy,
