Using sentence combining in technical writing classes

    Get PDF
Sentence combining exercises are advanced as a way to teach technical writing style without reliance upon abstractions, from which students do not learn. Such exercises: (1) give students regular writing practice; (2) teach the logic of sentence structure, sentence editing, and punctuation; (3) paragraph development and organization; and (4) rhetorical stance. Typical sentence, paragraph, and discourse level sentence combining exercises are described

Use of synchrotron tomographic techniques in the assessment of diffusion parameters for solute transport in groundwater flow

This technical note describes the use of time-resolved synchrotron radiation tomographic energy dispersive diffraction imaging (TEDDI) and tomographic X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) for examining ion diffusion in porous media. The technique is capable of tracking the diffusion of several ion species simultaneously. This is illustrated by results which compare the movement of Cs+, Ba2+ and La3+ ions from solution into a typical sample of English chalk. The results exhibited somewhat anomalous (non-Fickian) behaviour and revealed heterogeneities (in 1D) on the scale of a few millimetres

High-precision measurements of seawater Pb isotope compositions by double spike thermal ionization mass spectrometry

A new method for the determination of seawater Pb isotope compositions and concentrations was developed, which combines and optimizes previously published protocols for the separation and isotopic analysis of this element. For isotopic analysis, the procedure involves initial separation of Pb from 1 to 2 L of seawater by co-precipitation with Mg hydroxide and further purification by a two stage anion exchange procedure. The Pb isotope measurements are subsequently carried out by thermal ionization mass spectrometry using a Pb-207-Pb-204 double spike for correction of instrumental mass fractionation. These methods are associated with a total procedural Pb blank of 28 +/- 21 pg(1sd) and typical Pb recoveries of 40-60%. The Pb concentrations are determined by isotope dilution (ID) on 50 mL of seawater, using a simplified version of above methods. Analyses of multiple aliquots of six seawater samples yield a reproducibility of about +/- 1to +/- 10%(1sd) for Pb concentrations of between 7 and 50 pmol/kg, where precision was primarily limited by the uncertainty of the blank correction (12 +/- 4 pg; 1sd). For the Pb isotope analyses, typical reproducibilities (+/- 2sd) of 700-1500 ppm and 1000-2000ppm were achieved for Pb-207/Pb-206, Pb-208/Pb-206 and Pb-206/Pb-204, Pb-207/Pb-204, Pb-208/Pb-204, respectively. These results are superior to literature data that were obtained using plasma source mass spectrometry and they are at least a factor of five more precise for ratios involving the minor Pb-204 isotope. Both Pb concentration and isotope data, furthermore, show good agreement with published results for two seawater intercomparison samples of the GEOTRACES program. Finally, the new methods were applied to a seawater depth profile from the eastern South Atlantic. Both Pb contents and isotope compositions display a smooth evolution with depth, and no obvious outliers. Compared to previous Pb isotope data for seawater, the Pb-206/Pb-204 ratios are well correlated with Pb-207/Pb-206, underlining the significant improvement achieved in the measurement of the minor Pb-204 isotope

Approaching multichannel Kondo physics using correlated bosons: Quantum phases and how to realize them

We discuss how multichannel Kondo physics can arise in the setting of a localized level coupled to several bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid leads. We propose one physical realization involving ultracold bosonic atoms coupled to an atomic quantum dot, and a second, based on superconducting nanowires coupled to a Cooper-pair box. The corresponding zero-temperature phase diagram is determined via an interplay between Kondo-type phenomena arising from the dot and the consequences of direct inter-lead hopping, which can suppress the Kondo effect. We demonstrate that the multichannel Kondo state is stable over a wide range of parameters. We establish the existence of two nontrivial phase transitions, involving a competition between Kondo screening at the dot and strong correlations either within or between the leads (which respectively promote local number- and phase-pinning). These transitions coalesce at a self-dual multicritical point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

SGLT-2 Inhibitors: A Novel Mechanism in Targeting Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

OBJECTIVE: To review the chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy, tolerability, dosing, drug interactions, and administration of canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin, and comparing the benefit and risk aspects of using these agents in the older adult diabetes patient population. DATA SOURCES, STUDY SELECTION, DATA EXTRACTION, AND DATA SYNTHESIS: A search of PubMed using the terms SGLT-2 inhibitors, canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, efficacy, and tolerability was performed to find relevant primary literature on each of the sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors currently approved for use in type 2 diabetes. Phase III trials for all agents were included. All English-language articles from 2010 to 2015 appearing in these searches were reviewed for relevance to this paper. In addition, related articles suggested in the PubMed search were also reviewed. The SGLT-2 inhibitors have shown a reduction in hemoglobin A1c values and fasting plasma glucose levels with a low incidence of hypoglycemia. The incidence of mycotic infections is increased in patients taking an SGLT-2 inhibitor. CONCLUSION: SGLT-2 inhibitors may be a viable treatment option for patients not controlled on other oral agents. The risk of hypoglycemia is small. However, the clinical efficacy and tolerability of these agents has not been fully elucidated in older and frail patients
