Kirschner, P. A., & Van Merriënboer, J. J. G. (2008). Ten steps to complex learning: A new approach to instruction and instructional design. In T. L. Good (Ed.), 21st century education: A reference handbook (pp. 244-253). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. The subject of this chapter, ten steps to complex learning (van Merriënboer & Kirschner, 2007), was recently published as a practical and modified version of the four-component instructional design (4C-ID) model originally posited by van Merriënboer in 1997. These ten steps are mainly prescriptive and aim to provide a practicable version of the 4C-ID model for teachers, domain experts involved in educational and/or training design, and less experienced instructional designers. The model described will typically be used to develop educational or training programs aimed at the acquisition of complex cognitive skills (in this chapter referred to as complex learning) which can have a duration ranging from several weeks to several years

EU accession and income growth:An empirical approach

    Get PDF
The dynamic effects from EU membership are crucial for the new member states to catch up with the average income level in the old member states. To gauge the dynamic effects we follow a two-step procedure in which a gravity equation for bilateral trade shows the trade effect of EU membership and a growth regression yields the income effect of trade. Shared EU membership is found to increase trade between two of its member states with about 27%. EU membership may contribute to trade by inducing countries to improve the quality of their institutions. Trade increases by another 23% if institutions improve, yielding a total trade increase of 50%. Improved openness increases income by 38% according to our estimates. Adding a small direct effect of improved institutions on income, the total income effect of EU membership is 40% for the 12 new members and Turkey. This implies that EU membership, or its effect on trade and institutions, could lead to large economic gains for the new member states, but does not bring them economically on par with the old member states.</p

The development and application of a simple methodology for recording rock art using consumer-grade digital cameras

A simple methodology for recording rock art has been recently developed in Australia and tested on aboriginal rock art, including both petroglyphs and pictographs (engraved and painted images respectively). The approach was based upon commercial photogrammetric software and consumer-grade digital cameras, because it was believed that archaeologists, conservators and site managers need simple and cost-effective methods to record and document rock art. This methodology has been adopted subsequently by the Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Project working in conjunction with English Heritage, to assist in recording 1500 prehistoric engraved panels located across the north-east of England. Significantly, the field work is carried out by enthusiastic volunteers, willing to sacrifice their weekends to capture imagery suitable for digital photogrammetry. This paper explains briefly how the recording technique was developed in Australia before indicating how expertise and equipment was integrated to allow UK-based volunteers to carry out data acquisition and, perhaps surprisingly, also the photogrammetry. This will demonstrate the value of mobilising the voluntary sector for heritage recording, which is feasible only if recording methodologies are based on cheap and simple instrumentation

Free motion time-of-arrival operator and probability distribution

We reappraise and clarify the contradictory statements found in the literature concerning the time-of-arrival operator introduced by Aharonov and Bohm in Phys. Rev. {\bf 122}, 1649 (1961). We use Naimark's dilation theorem to reproduce the generalized decomposition of unity (or POVM) from any self-adjoint extension of the operator, emphasizing a natural one, which arises from the analogy with the momentum operator on the half-line. General time operators are set within a unifying perspective. It is shown that they are not in general related to the time of arrival, even though they may have the same form.Comment: 10 a4 pages, no figure

Het ene oordeel is het andere niet: Kwantitatieve analyse van de variatie bij IGZ-Inspecteurs

    Get PDF

Strings on type IIB pp-wave backgrounds with interacting massive theories on the worldsheet

We consider superstring theories on pp-wave backgrounds which result in an integrable N=(2,2){\cal N}=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theory on the worldsheet. We obtain exact eigenvalues of the light-cone gauge superstring hamiltonian in the massive and interacting world-sheet theory with superpotential Z3−ZZ^3-Z. We find the modes of the supergravity part of the string spectrum, and their space-time interpretation. Because the system is effectively at strong coupling on the worldsheet, these modes are not in one-to-one correspondence with the usual type IIB supergravity modes in the p−→0p_{-} \to 0 limit. However, the above correspondence holds in the α′→0\alpha'\to 0 limit.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure; minor changes, comments adde
