    SPATIAL AND SUPPLY/DEMAND AGGLOMERATION ECONOMIES: AN EVALUATION OF STATE-AND-INDUSTRY-LINKAGES IN THE U.S. FOOD SYSTEM

    In this paper we postulate, measure, and evaluate the importance of cost-impacts from spatial and industrial spillovers for analysis of economic performance. To accomplish this, we incorporate measures of "activity levels" of related states and industries in a cost function model, and estimate their associated thick market and agglomeration effects in terms of shadow values and elasticities. We focus on the food processing sector, the proximity of own-industry activity in neighboring states, and the supply- and demand- side "drivers", associated with urbanization and localization economies (represented by the GSP and agricultural intensity in the own and neighboring states). We find significant cost-savings benefits to a states food processing sector of being close to other food manufacturing centers (high levels of food processing activity in neighboring states). We also find it beneficial to be in a state with high purchasing power (demand), and to have neighboring states that are agriculture-based (supply). However, it also seems costly to actually be located in a heavily agricultural or rural state, possibly due to diseconomies from "thin markets" associated with infrastructure support and labor markets.Productivity Analysis,

    Communication Development and Its Disorders: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

    There is a reciprocal relationship between the study of language disorders and research in normal language development. Recent studies in normal acquisition have led to a model of language development that includes not only linguistic achievements, but the development of social and cognitive abilities that lay the basis for the transition from prelinguistic communication to the use of conventional forms. This model has been applied to the study of developmental disorders of language learning. Such a model allows the more puzzling disorders of language development, such as childhood aphasia and primary autism, to be placed in a framework that predicts language disruption when underlying perceptual, cognitive, or social abilities are lacking. Assessment procedures that can be drawn from the model of language disorders are presented. It is argued that the study of these disabilities is important in the building of theoretical models of intact language processing that specify more precisely the contribution of underlying skills to overall functioning. Questions for future research that serve this reciprocal purpose are discussed

    Method and apparatus for assessing cardiovascular risk

    The method for assessing risk of an adverse clinical event includes detecting a physiologic signal in the subject and determining from the physiologic signal a sequence of intervals corresponding to time intervals between heart beats. The long-time structure of fluctuations in the intervals over a time period of more than fifteen minutes is analyzed to assess risk of an adverse clinical event. In a preferred embodiment, the physiologic signal is an electrocardiogram and the time period is at least fifteen minutes. A preferred method for analyzing the long-time structure variability in the intervals includes computing the power spectrum and fitting the power spectrum to a power law dependence on frequency over a selected frequency range such as 10.sup.-4 to 10.sup.-2 Hz.     RX J0911+05: A Massive Cluster Lens at z=0.769

    We report the detection of a massive high-redshift cluster of galaxies near the quadruple quasar RX J0911+05, using the LRIS instrument on the Keck-II telescope. The cluster is found to have a mean redshift of =0.7689+/-0.002 and a velocity dispersion of sigma=836{+180-200} km/s, based on redshift measurements for 24 member galaxies. This massive high-redshift cluster is the origin of the unusually large external shear required by lensing models of the quadruple quasar system. We predict the expected time delay depending on the exact contribution of the cluster. A measurement of the time delay and further deep lensing and X-ray observations will unravel useful properties of this serendipitously discovered high-redshift cluster, and may put interesting cosmological constraints on H0.Comment: Submitted to ApJL, 7 pages, 5 figure

    In Vivo Colonization of the Mouse Large Intestine and In Vitro Penetration of Intestinal Mucus by an Avirulent Smooth Strain of Salmonella typhimurium and Its Lipopolysaccharide-Deficient Mutant

    The relative abilities of an avirulent Salmonella typhimurium strain with wild-type lipopolysaccharide (LPS) character, SL5319, and a nearly isogenic LPS-deficient mutant, SL5325, to colonize the large intestines of streptomycin-treated CD-1 mice in vivo and to penetrate colonic mucus in vitro were studied. Previously it had been shown that, when fed simultaneously to streptomycin-treated mice (approximately 1010 CFU each), the S. typhimurium strain with wild-type LPS colonized at 108 CFU/g of feces indefinitely, whereas the LPS-deficient mutant dropped within 3 days to a level of only 104 CFU/g of feces. In the present investigation, when SL5325 was allowed to colonize for 8 days before feeding mice SL5319 or when it was fed to mice simultaneously with an Escherichia coli strain of human fecal origin (1010 CFU each), both strains colonized indefinitely at 107 CFU/g of feces. Moreover, when the wild-type and LPS-deficient mutant strains were fed to mice simultaneously in low numbers (approximately 105 CFU each) the strains survived equally well in the large intestines for 8 days, after which the LPS-deficient mutant was eliminated (less than 102 CFU/g of feces), whereas the wild-type colonized at a level of 107 CFU/g of feces. In addition although both strains were able to adhere to mucus and epithelial cell preparations in vitro, the wild-type strain was shown to have greater motility and chemotactic activity on CD-1 mouse colonic mucus in vitro and to more rapidly penetrate and form a stable association with immobilized colonic mucosal components in vitro. Based on these data, we suggest that the ability of an S. typhimurium strain to colonize the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine may, in part, depend on its ability to penetrate deeply into the mucus layer on the intestinal wall and subsequently, through growth, colonize the mucosa

The article presented preliminary results suggesting the possible usefulness of fenfluramine (a substituted phenylethylamine widely used as an appetite suppressant) in the treatment of infantile autism (July 15, 1982, issue). The rationale for the use of this agent rests on its ability to lower peripheral-blood levels of serotonin and on the observation that a substantial minority of autistic persons have elevated peripheral-blood serotonin levels. The report emphasized the preliminary nature of the results in a small sample of three young autistic boys with elevated serotonin levels
