Studies in life history of Murgantia histronics in Tennessee

This thesis consists of the results of a number of studies in the life history of the Murgantia histrionica, Hahn. This insect was chosen first, because of its great economic importance in Tennessee and secondly, because of a lack of knowledge of control methods. It was believed that if more were known about the life history of the insect, better control methods could be worked out. The experiments were all carried on, in glass cages and vials, in room 400 Morrill Hall. The work was started in September 1927, and ended July 25, 1928. It was originally intended that the work cover only eight months, but on account of the poor results obtained in the winter, it was decided to continue the work through June of 1928. The experiments are not as scientific as they should be. on account of not having any way of controlling temperature and humidity in the room where the experiments were conducted. I had no way of telling the daily maximum and minimum temperature, and the humidity of the room. Neither did I have a way of recording the hourly temperature of the room. In the winter the temperature of the room fluctuated a great deal. Sometimes there was practically no heat at all in the room; at other times the temperature was ninety. After the beginning of warm weather in the spring, I used temperature and humidity data furnished me by the Knoxville Weather Bureau

Rates of SNAP Receipt Stabilize or Drop in All Regions for First Time Since Great Recession

From the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007 until 2012, receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits grew steadily. Participation and funding rose to historic levels driven by the changing economy, intensified efforts to enroll eligible populations, and expanded benefits and eligibility via the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Throughout the recovery, SNAP has acted as an economic stimulus and part of a safety net for struggling families. In 2013, SNAP receipt fell slightly—a decline perhaps indicative of a slowly recovering economy. However, substantially more households still reported receiving SNAP benefits in 2013 than before the recession

Social Justice and the ‘good’ nurse

    Get PDF
Inequalities in health between social classes and other groups have been known about for some time but despite attempts to address them, they remain highly visible as a failure of social justice. The Health and Social Care Act 2012 passed into law statutory duties on the NHS to have regard to the need to reduce health inequalities, and the NHS Constitution states that: ‘[the NHS] has a wider social duty to promote equality through the services it provides and to pay particular attention to groups or sections of society where improvements in health and life expectancy are not keeping pace with the rest of the population.’ However this aim is not mentioned in the NHS Outcomes framework, and in the current fiscal climate and associated budgetary pressures, the prospect of progress at the policy level appears slim. This leaves individual practitioners in a difficult situation. In some countries, notably in north America, the advancement of patients’ health via social justice is a stated aim of the nursing profession, and as part of a regulatory Code of Ethics, this appears to be a clear duty for every nurse. No such clause exists in the UK Code, so that action promoting social justice cannot be regarded as a professional duty which must be undertaken by all nurses. This paper argues that although advocating for social justice is therefore not required of all just-good-enough nurses, those practicising just within their Code, it is however a necessary feature of the ‘good’ nurse. The issue is addressed from both education and practice: via conceptual discussion of the ‘good’ nurse from a nurse academic, and illustration of good practice in promoting social justice from a practicing nurse
