Radial honeycomb core
Core alleviates many limitations of conventional nacelle construction methods. Radical core, made of metals or nonmetals, is fabricated either by joining nodes and then expanding, or by performing each layer and then joining nodes. Core may also be produced from ribbons or strips with joined nodes or ribbons oriented in longitudinal planes
Development and flight tests of vortex-attenuating splines
The ground tests and full-scale flight tests conducted during development of the vortex-attenuating spline are described. The flight tests were conducted using a vortex generating aircraft with and without splines; a second aircraft was used to probe the vortices generated in both cases. The results showed that splines significantly reduced the vortex effects, but resulted in some noise and climb performance penalties on the generating aircraft
Direct reaction measurements with a 132Sn radioactive ion beam
The (d,p) neutron transfer and (d,d) elastic scattering reactions were
measured in inverse kinematics using a radioactive ion beam of 132Sn at 630
MeV. The elastic scattering data were taken in a region where Rutherford
scattering dominated the reaction, and nuclear effects account for less than 8%
of the cross section. The magnitude of the nuclear effects was found to be
independent of the optical potential used, allowing the transfer data to be
normalized in a reliable manner. The neutron-transfer reaction populated a
previously unmeasured state at 1363 keV, which is most likely the
single-particle 3p1/2 state expected above the N=82 shell closure. The data
were analyzed using finite range adiabatic wave calculations and the results
compared with the previous analysis using the distorted wave Born
approximation. Angular distributions for the ground and first excited states
are consistent with the previous tentative spin and parity assignments.
Spectroscopic factors extracted from the differential cross sections are
similar to those found for the one neutron states beyond the benchmark
doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
On the Existence of Undistorted Progressive Waves (UPWs) of Arbitrary Speeds in Nature
We present the theory, the experimental evidence, and fundamental physical
consequences concerning the existence of families of undistorted progressive
waves (UPWs) of arbitrary speeds , which are solutions of the
homogeneous wave equation, Maxwell equations, and Dirac and Weyl equations.Comment: 77 pages, Latex article, with figures. Includes corrections to the

Understanding Face and Shame: A Servant-Leadership and Face Management Model
Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Prior to this study, to my knowledge, no hermeneutic phenomenological research of face management has been conducted in a church setting. Through a review of the literature, four areas are explored: face and shame, face management, servant-leadership, and face, shame, and face management within the church. This study obtained approval from the Institutional Review Board and informed consent from the participants. Three Chinese and three American Christian ministers were chosen to complete a question sheet and participate in two semi-structured interview sessions. A first cycle of open coding and second cycle of pattern coding were used during data analysis. Face experiences are discussed in light of eight major themes: body, triggers, becoming, face concepts, strategies, emotions, servant-leadership, and the church. Findings from the study help build a servant-leadership and face management model, which can offer an anchored approach for clergy and pastoral counselors to address face and shame and to develop therapeutic interventions
Astrometry with Hubble Space Telescope: A Parallax of the Fundamental Distance Calibrator RR Lyrae
We present an absolute parallax and relative proper motion for the
fundamental distance scale calibrator, RR Lyr. We obtain these with astrometric
data from FGS 3, a white-light interferometer on HST. We find mas. Spectral classifications and VRIJHKTM and DDO51 photometry of
the astrometric reference frame surrounding RR Lyr indicate that field
extinction is low along this line of sight. We estimate =0.07\pm0.03 for
these reference stars. The extinction suffered by RR Lyr becomes one of the
dominant contributors to the uncertainty in its absolute magnitude. Adopting
the average field absorption, =0.07 \pm 0.03, we obtain M_V^{RR} = 0.61
^{-0.11}_{+0.10}. This provides a distance modulus for the LMC, m-M = 18.38 -
18.53^{-0.11}_{+0.10} with the average extinction-corrected magnitude of RR Lyr
variables in the LMC, , remaining a significant uncertainty. We compare
this result to more than 80 other determinations of the distance modulus of the
LMC.Comment: Several typos corrected. To appear in The Astronomical Journal,

The National Ignition Facility: The World's Largest Laser
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a 192-beam laser facility presently under construction at LLNL. When completed, NIF will be a 1.8-MJ, 500-TW ultraviolet laser system. Its missions are to obtain fusion ignition and to perform high energy density experiments in support of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. Four of the NIF beams have been commissioned to demonstrate laser performance including target and beam alignment. During this time, NIF demonstrated on a single-beam basis that it will meet its performance goals and demonstrated its precision and flexibility for pulse shaping, pointing, timing and beam conditioning. It also performed four important experiments for Inertial Confinement Fusion and High Energy Density Science. Presently, the project is installing production hardware to complete the project in 2009 with the goal to begin ignition experiments in 2010. An integrated plan has been developed including the NIF operations, user equipment such as diagnostics and cryogenic target capability, and experiments and calculations to meet this goal
