Cholesterol Granuloma of the Frontal Sinus: A Case Report
Cholesterol granulomas are common in the mastoid antrum and air cells of the temporal bone. In the paranasal sinuses, especially in the frontal sinus, they have occasionally been mentioned in the literature. The pathogenesis is unknown, but the majority of the authors support the concept of airway obstruction in the cells well pneumatised of temporal bone and paranasal sinuses. The authors report a case of cholesterol granuloma of the frontal sinus treated with radical surgical techniques, and they also recommend an endoscopic approach to frontal sinus to restore or enlarge the nose-frontal canal and promote drainage and ventilation of the frontal sinus
Plants in Menstrual Diseases: A Systematic Study from Italian Folk Medicine on Current Approaches
Background: Plant-based remedies have been used since antiquity to treat menstrual-related diseases (MD). From the late nineteenth to the early to mid-twentieth century, Italian folk remedies to treat “women’s diseases” were documented in a vast corpus of literature sources. Aim: The purpose of this paper is to bring to light the plant-based treatments utilized by Italian folk medicine to heal clinical manifestations of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and menstrual disorders in an attempt to discuss these remedies from a modern pharmacological point of view. Moreover, we compare the medical applications described by Hippocrates with those utilized by Italian folk medicine to check if they result from a sort of continuity of use by over two thousand years. Results: Out of the 54 plants employed in Italian folk medicine, 25 (46.3%) were already documented in the pharmacopoeia of the Corpus Hippocraticum for treating MD. Subsequently, a detailed search of scientific data banks such as Medline and Scopus was undertaken to uncover recent results concerning bioactivities of the plant extracts to treat MD. About 26% of the plants used by Italian folk medicine, nowadays, have undergone human trials to assess their actual efficacy. At the same time, about 41% of these herbal remedies come back to in different countries. Conclusions: Active principles extracted from plants used by Italian folk healers could be a promising source of knowledge and represent strength candidates for future drug discovery for the management of MD
ALK rearrangement in specific subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma: immunophenotypic and morphological features
Lung adenocarcinomas are characterized by a variety of genetic and epigenetic changes that lead to activation of specific signaling pathways. This allowed the classification of lung adenocarcinomas according to genetic alterations and the clinical development of novel anticancer agents that affect the activity of specific oncoproteins. In such a context, chromosomal rearrangements that cause constitutive activation of ALK gene define a category of lung adenocarcinomas that is amenable to targeted therapy with ALK inhibitors. Thus, a major issue of current research is to define the morphological and immunophenotypic features of lung ALK-rearranged adenocarcinomas to improve the selection of tumors suitable for molecular genotyping. ALK status was determined, by immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization, in 94 surgically resected lung adenocarcinomas and correlated with histomorphological parameters. Indeed, ALK rearrangement was observed in 10/94 (11%) lung adenocarcinomas and enriched in tumors with a predominant mucinous (46%; p < 0.05) and solid (29%; p < 0.05) pattern. By contrast, it was lacking or sporadically observed in lung adenocarcinomas with predominant acinar, papillary or lepidic pattern. Moreover, the presence of signet-ring cells was predominantly observed in ALK-rearranged tumors (47%; p < 0.05). These data suggest that ALK rearrangement is associated with specific and distinct clinical–pathological characters compared to other genotypes. Thus, the knowledge of these characteristics can improve the diagnostic accuracy and lead to a better understanding of the behavior of ALK-rearranged NSCLC
Natural and Synthetic Polymeric Biomaterials for Application in Wound Management
Biomaterials are at the forefront of the future, finding a variety of applications in the biomedical field, especially in wound healing, thanks to their biocompatible and biodegradable properties. Wounds spontaneously try to heal through a series of interconnected processes involving several initiators and mediators such as cytokines, macrophages, and fibroblasts. The combination of biopolymers with wound healing properties may provide opportunities to synthesize matrices that stimulate and trigger target cell responses crucial to the healing process. This review outlines the optimal management and care required for wound treatment with a special focus on biopolymers, drug-delivery systems, and nanotechnologies used for enhanced wound healing applications. Researchers have utilized a range of techniques to produce wound dressings, leading to products with different characteristics. Each method comes with its unique strengths and limitations, which are important to consider. The future trajectory in wound dressing advancement should prioritize economical and eco-friendly methodologies, along with improving the efficacy of constituent materials. The aim of this work is to give researchers the possibility to evaluate the proper materials for wound dressing preparation and to better understand the optimal synthesis conditions as well as the most effective bioactive molecules to load
Diffuse Leukoplakia of the Bladder Ostium-Sparing in Patient Treated with Leuprorelin for Breast Cancer
Case. A 55-year-old woman came to our attention in April 2020 referring haematuria, frequency and urgency. The patient referred previous treatment with leuprorelin 3.75 mg/2 ml for breast cancer three years ago. Urine culture was performed and resulted always negative for pathogens. Cystoscopy revealed a whitish plaque lesion on the fundus, dome, trigone, and left lateral wall of the bladder. Histology of the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of leukoplakia of the bladder. The plan is to follow her up repeating a cystoscopy every three months and biopsy in 6 months. Literature search revealed very little information on pathogenesis and prognosis of this condition due to its rare occurrence. The main objective of our case study was to describe individual situation of a woman affected by diffuse leukoplakia of the bladder ostium-sparing with a previous treatment with leuprorelin 3.75 mg/2 ml for breast cancer and to show safety of follow-up by cystoscopy and biopsy. Conclusions. We showed a case of a woman treated with leuprorelin and with diffuse leukoplakia of the bladder. We support the recommended long-term follow-up and surveillance based on the literature review by cystoscopy with or without biopsy

An Urologic Face of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia:Sequential Prostatic and Penis Localization
We report a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in whom a leukemic involvement of prostate and penis occurred in the advanced phase of his disease. Obstructive urinary symptoms were indicative of prostatic CLL infiltration, followed by the occurrence of an ulcerative lesion on the glans. Histologic examination confirmed the neoplastic B-cell infiltration. Both localizations responded to conventional treatments. A review of the literature confirms that leukemic involvement of the genito-urinary system is uncommon in CLL patients. However, such an involvement should be considered in CLL patients with urologic symptoms and a long history of the disease
