Epistemological Disjunctivism: An Analysis and A Critique

    Get PDF
In this dissertation, I focus on the epistemological concerns regarding a disjunctivist theory of perception. More specifically, I focus on a critique of epistemological disjunctivism, a thesis about how our beliefs about the world are supported by perception. In order to explain the possibility of perceptual knowledge, an epistemological disjunctivist argues that one’s epistemic support in a good case, seeing that p (e.g., seeing that there is a lemon on the table), is different in kind from one’s epistemic support in a bad case, seeming to see that p (e.g., seeming to see that there is a lemon on the table). What I present here is the background motivations that support such a position and show that the theory faces various problems and may not clearly offer an adequate account of perceptual knowledge. By providing a critique of epistemological disjunctivism, I aim to show that it may not provide a better position than an alternate, empirically plausible, non-disjunctivist position in accounting for perceptual knowledge. This dissertation constitutes a substantial beginning to this project. The focus of this dissertation addresses a central issue: It considers whether epistemological disjunctivism adequately provides an account of perceptual knowledge against skeptical concerns. I devote four chapters of the dissertation in formulating a critique of the most prominent accounts of epistemological disjunctivism. Since there has been an increased interest in knowledge-first epistemology, I include an addendum discussing a knowledge-first epistemological disjunctivist account and its merits and contrast that with a knowledge-first virtue epistemology position

Background: Abruptio placentae is very frequently seen in our population. Few studies have reported maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality associated with this condition. No work has been done on abruptio placentae in our setup. The data generated will help to improve maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality by planning prompt management of future cases of placental abruption. Objective of this study was to study possible etiological factors of abruptio placentae, analyse maternal outcome, perinatal outcome in the form of maternal morbidity and mortality and discuss possible preventive measures and future management optionMethods: The retrospective observational study it was included all cases presenting with ante partum haemorrhage during the study period. Subjects selected for the study were all cases diagnosed as having abruptio placentae. All other causes of APH like placenta previa and other extraplacental causes were excluded. Results: In the present study incidence of abruptio placentae is higher in 25-30 year that were 42.5% and more in 2nd gravida patient. PIH was accounting for 50%, most of the patients (95%) were anaemic at admission and majority of them required blood transfusion.one maternal mortality (2.5%) occurred, perinatal mortality was 75%.Conclusions: Abruptio placentae serious condition with manifestation of significant maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Complications can be reduced by provisional antenatal care to every woman and with improvement in medical facilities, availability of blood transfusion, proper management of shock. With liberalization of caesarean section, the rate of maternal morbidity and mortality is gradually on the decline

CORRELATION BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND BODY MASS INDEX AMONG CHILDREN

Background: The prevalence of childhood obesity increasing steadily in India. Obesity may results from a complex interaction of endogenous and exogenous causes. Most of them having exogenous causes and physical inactivity is one of them. Increased hours of inactivity due to increasing academic pressure, use of electronics gazettes have all replaced outdoor games and activities which promotes sedentary life. There are very few studies describing the pattern of physical activity of children in India.Aim: The present study aimed to find out correlation between physical activity, BMI and time spend in front of screen among children.Methodology: Study was approved by review board of ethics committee. 312 school going children of various income groups with the age 6-12 years were recruited by purposive sampling method. Informed consent was provided by teachers or parents. Height and weight of children was taken to calculate BMI. Physical Activity Questionnaire for children (PAQ-C) was filled up to assess the physical activity by children. Self-reported hours of time spent in front of the screen was noted. Results: Distribution of obesity and overweight in the sample was 9% and 16%, respectively. There were statistically significant negative correlation between physical activity and BMI (r = -0.619); and Time Spend in front of Screen and physical activity (r = -0.554). There was positive correlation between BMI and Time Spend in front of Screen (r= 0.556).Conclusion: Increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in school going children relate to decreasing physical activity level and increasing time spend if front of TV, video games and computers

Ideology as Political Weapon: How Alamut Challenges the Justice of Plato's Republic

I explore Vladimir Bartol’s Alamut, drawing on its sociopolitical context in 1938 Slovenia, as a cautionary tale about potential unjust consequences of putting into practice Plato’s model of a just city-state, as described in the Republic (380 BC). I also investigate how key structures of Plato’s republic have been applied to ideologically driven European totalitarian states and modern terrorist organizations, such as al-Qaeda, and argue that the injustice of such institutions has its origins in the deception at the core of their guiding creeds. Following the critiques of Jasbir Puar and Amit Rai in “Monster, Terrorist, Fag” (2002), I conclude by addressing how Alamut, as a novel that cautions against ideologies, advances particular racial ideologies itself regarding the Middle East’s relationship to terrorism. I explore key implications of this understanding of the novel as we consider the inherent dangers of the inescapable tool that is ideology.Ope

Files are scattered over multiple machines. In case if user forgets to take file in pen drive or email the file, user is left with no other option. But calling home or respecting location and explaining the person to navigate through the directory and mail the file. Now if the person is not computer educated or does not know how to operate the computer and internet then the situation become more difficult. In this case the user may face many issues as he might not get the required file. To overcome this problem many developers have come up with the mobile application which will remotely connect to your desktop and transfer the file. Now a days loss of contacts has become a major issue. So this app also gives the facility of automatic contact update, even if user doesn’t have any Gmail or any otheraccount on website. In this project we make an application which can search the desktop computer file using SMS as well as automatically update user’s contact

An unusual case of labial fusion in a post pubertal girl

    Get PDF
Labial fusion is defined as either partial or complete adherence of the labia minora. It is also known as vulvar fusion, labial adhesion, labial agglutination or synechia of the vulva. This condition is common in pre-pubertal girls when estrogen levels are low and commonly resolves spontaneously post-puberty. This condition is usually asymptomatic and can be treated with topical application of estrogen or betamethasone cream or by manual or surgical separation of adhesions. We present a case of labial fusion in post pubertal girl which was managed surgically

SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF FEBUXOSTAT AND NAPROXEN IN SYNTHETIC MIXTURE BY REVERSE PHASE HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY METHOD

Objective: To develop simple, precise, rapid, and accurate RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous estimation of Febuxostat and Naproxen in synthetic mixture. To perform complete validation of newly developed analytical methods as per ICH(Q2) R1 [32] Guideline. Methods: In RP-HPLC method for Febuxostat and Naproxen, chromatographic separation was carried out on Shimandzu LC-20AT, Hypersil BDS column (250mm x 4.6mm, 5 μm) using mobile phase ACN: Methanol: Phosphate Buffer (50:35:15 v/v) pH 5, detected at 288 nm, with flow rate 1.0ml/min and injection volume 20 μL. Results: For RP- HPLC Linearity of Febuxostat and Naproxen were found to be 4 – 12 μg/ml and 25 - 75 μg/ml respectively. For both the developed and validated methods the %RSD was found to be less than 2% and the % recovery was found to between 98-102 %. Conclusion: The developed and validated method was found to be simple, accurate, economical, robust and reproducible. There was no interference of any diluent and excipient in the determination of drugs from synthetic mixture. So, the method can be successfully applied for routine Quality control analysis
