Statistical Signal Analysis for Systems with Interferenced Inputs

    Get PDF
A new approach is introduced, based on statistical signal analysis, which overcomes the error due to input signal interference. The model analyzed is given. The input signals u sub 1 (t) and u sub 2 (t) are assumed to be unknown. The measurable signals x sub 1 (t) and x sub 2 (t) are interferened according to the frequency response functions, H sub 12 (f) and H sub 21 (f). The goal of the analysis was to evaluate the power output due to each input, u sub 1 (t) and u sub 2 (t), for the case where both are applied to the same time. In addition, all frequency response functions are calculated. The interferenced system is described by a set of five equations with six unknown functions. An IBM XT Personal Computer, which was interfaced with the FFT, was used to solve the set of equations. The software was tested on an electrical two-input, one-output system. The results were excellent. The research presented includes the analysis of the acoustic radiation from a rectangular plate with two force inputs and the sound pressure as an output signal

Applying university strategic objectives at the school level

    Get PDF
University Teachers at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies are working together on the Teaching, Learning and Participation Project. This project encompasses three strands: widening participation, student experience, and innovative learning and teaching; all key aspects of the University’s strategic objectives. The widening participation strand has focused primarily on partnership with local schools. This includes Campus Days whereby pupils who have the ability, but perhaps not the confidence, to enter higher education come to the University's two campuses and experience a day as a student. Additionally this strand is seeking to conduct a comparative study of assessment and feedback processes in secondary and higher education. The student experience strand has concentrated on employability and internationalisation. Examples include working with the local education authority to extend student learning and provide staff CPD opportunities via the establishment of an annual education lecture, and developing opportunities for internships overseas. Finally, the innovative learning and teaching strand has sought to review current teaching practices within the School, and to identify and trial innovative methodologies in an effort to engage learners more fully and thereby to enhance both the student and staff learning experiences

Strangeness contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the nucleon

The strangeness contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the nucleon is presented for momentum transfers in the range 0.45<Q2<1.00.45<Q^2<1.0 GeV2^2. The results are obtained via a combined analysis of forward-scattering parity-violating elastic ep\vec{e}p asymmetry data from the G0G^0 and HAPPEx experiments at Jefferson Lab, and elastic νp\nu p and νˉp\bar{\nu} p scattering data from Experiment 734 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The parity-violating asymmetries measured in elastic ep\vec{e}p scattering at forward angles establish a relationship between the strange vector form factors GEsG_E^s and GMsG_M^s, with little sensitivity to the strange axial form factor GAsG_A^s. On the other hand, elastic neutrino scattering at low Q2Q^2 is dominated by the axial form factor, with still some significant sensitivity to the vector form factors as well. The combination of the two data sets allows the simultaneous extraction of GEsG_E^s, GMsG_M^s, and GAsG_A^s over a significant range of Q2Q^2 for the very first time.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, will appear in AIP Conference Proceedings for PANIC 200

Carbamazepine in Treatment of the Violent Psychotic Patient

    Get PDF
Violence in the psychiatric setting may be perpetrated by patients with a variety of diagnoses including character disorders, episodic dyscontrol syndromes, and drug or alcohol intoxication. The violent behavior of aggressive psychotic patients is typically the most bizarre, unpredictable, and the least responsive to intervention with neuroleptics or lithium carbonate. Carbamazepine, an established anticonvulsant, has achieved growing prominence as an adjunctive measure in treatment of the violent psychotic. This paper will review the literature and summarize the posited pharmacological mechanisms, reported side effects, and clinical experience with carbamazepine in controlling the symptoms of violence and aggression in psychosis

Local cytokine transcription in naïve and previously infected sheep and lambs following challenge with Teladorsagia circumcincta

    Background

The abomasal helminth Teladorsagia circumcincta is one of the most economically important parasites affecting sheep in temperate regions. Infection is particularly detrimental to lambs, in which it can cause pronounced morbidity and severe production losses. Due to the spreading resistance of this parasite to all classes of anthelmintic drugs, teladorsagiosis is having an increasingly severe impact on the sheep industry with significant implications for sheep welfare. Protective immunity develops slowly, wanes rapidly and does not appear to be as effective in young lambs. To investigate the development of immunity to T. circumcincta in sheep and lambs, we used cytokine transcript profiling to examine differences in the abomasal mucosa and gastric lymph node of naïve and previously infected sheep and lambs following challenge.

Results

The results of these experiments demonstrated that the abomasal mucosa is a major source of cytokines during abomasal helminth infection. A local Th2-type cytokine response was observed in the abomasal mucosa and gastric lymph node of the previously infected sheep and lambs when compared with those of the naïve during the early stages of infection. In contrast, a pro-inflammatory component more was evident in the abomasal mucosa and gastric lymph node of the naïve sheep when compared with those of the previously infected, which was not observed in the lambs.

Conclusions

The greater levels of Th2-type cytokine transcripts in both the abomasum and gastric lymph node of the previously infected compared with naïve sheep and lambs emphasises the importance of these mechanisms in the immune response to T. circumcincta infection. Younger lambs appear to be able to generate similar Th2-type responses in the abomasum suggesting that the increased morbidity and apparent lack of resistance in younger lambs following continuous or repeated exposure to T. circumcincta is unlikely to be due to a lack of appropriate Th2-type cytokine production

A Model for Developing Interdisciplinary Research Theoretical Frameworks

    Get PDF
Embedded in interdisciplinary research, just as in disciplinary research, are statements of purpose, theoretical frameworks, research questions, reviews of literature, methodology, findings, recommendations, and more However, one of the least understood aspects of interdisciplinary research is the interdisciplinary research (IDR) theoretical framework. This article is intended to serve as a platform for dialogue within and across disciplines about interdisciplinary research and interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks. In addition, it provides a model for developing an IDR theoretical framework through an illustrative example of how an IDR theoretical framework was created and used within a dissertation study. We conclude the article noting critical elements about IDR and IDR theoretical frameworks for students and researchers to consider for enhancing their research

With the rapid advancements in technology and the democratization of media topology in Nigeria, many people are increasingly gaining access to the media and becoming empowered to actively participate in public debate about issues affecting them in addition to having a great deal of online social interactions. However, people’s access to and interactions with technology and other media have given rise to a host of malicious effects – propagation of doubtful and fabricated content. This has been shown to have the potential to adversely influence people’s lives and sense of judgment, especially regarding democratic processes such as political campaigns during which many malicious fabricated contents are disseminated. In recent history, from 2016, election campaigns in various countries across the world have highlighted how fake news can be targeted at specific people or individuals to influence and misguide them, and even influence polls results. Ever since, issues surrounding fake news and its impacts on democratic and social settings have been gaining pervasive research attention. Hence, the urge to explore the concepts of misinformation and democracy from a Nigerian context through a review of extant literature. In conclusion, several propositions were made, and a conceptual framework was designed for future research to explore the concept and empirically proffer solutions to the growing menace. Dissolution of Marriage (Divorce) under Islamic Law

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to be acquainted with the modalities of separation in marriage under Islamic law. The Holy Prophet (SAW) declared that among the things which have been permitted by law, divorce is the worst. Divorce being an evil, it must be avoided as far as possible. But in some occasions this evil becomes a necessity, because when it is impossible for the parties to the marriage to carry on their union with mutual affection and love then it is better to allow them to get separated than compel them to live together in an atmosphere of hatred and disaffection. The basis of divorce under Islamic law is the inability of the Spouses to live together rather than any specific cause (or guilt of a party) on account of which the parties cannot live together. A divorce may be either by the act of the husband or by the act of the wife. There are several modes of divorce under the Muslim law. Which will he discuss hereafter. In Islam, the husband pronounces the phrase “I divorce you” (in Arabic, talaq) to his wife. A man may divorce his wife three times, taking her back after the first two (reconciling). After the third talaq they can’t get back together until she marries someone else. Some do a “triple talaq”, in which the man says in one sitting “I divorce you” three times (or “I divorce you, three times”, “you’re triple divorced”). Many Islamic scholars believe there is a wailing Period involved hem between the three talaqs, pointing to various hadiths. However the practice of “triple talaq” at one sitting has been “legally recognized historically and has been particularly practiced in Nigeria
