    The role of Akt signalling in the mammalian ovary

    The serine/threonine protein kinase Akt is involved in many cellular processes including cell growth, survival, proliferation and metabolism. Akt activity is modulated downstream of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) in response to different extracellular stimuli. In the mammalian ovary, Akt collaborates with other kinases in the regulation of coordinate follicle and oocyte development. Akt determines the pool of primordial follicles and the transition from quiescent to growing phase. In addition, the kinase modulates granulosa cell apoptosis throughout folliculogenesis. In oocytes Akt participates in the control of meiosis resumption and, at metaphase II stage, regulates polar body emission and spindle organization. Its inhibition negatively affects preimplantation embryo development. As a consequence of such a central role, Akt dysregulation is associated with several human diseases including infertility and ovarian cancer.[...

    RT-GENE: Real-time eye gaze estimation in natural environments

    In this work, we consider the problem of robust gaze estimation in natural environments. Large camera-to-subject distances and high variations in head pose and eye gaze angles are common in such environments. This leads to two main shortfalls in state-of-the-art methods for gaze estimation: hindered ground truth gaze annotation and diminished gaze estimation accuracy as image resolution decreases with distance. We first record a novel dataset of varied gaze and head pose images in a natural environment, addressing the issue of ground truth annotation by measuring head pose using a motion capture system and eye gaze using mobile eyetracking glasses. We apply semantic image inpainting to the area covered by the glasses to bridge the gap between training and testing images by removing the obtrusiveness of the glasses. We also present a new real-time algorithm involving appearance-based deep convolutional neural networks with increased capacity to cope with the diverse images in the new dataset. Experiments with this network architecture are conducted on a number of diverse eye-gaze datasets including our own, and in cross dataset evaluations. We demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in terms of estimation accuracy in all experiments, and the architecture performs well even on lower resolution images

    Investigating cooperation with robotic peers

    We explored how people establish cooperation with robotic peers, by giving participants the chance to choose whether to cooperate or not with a more/less selfish robot, as well as a more or less interactive, in a more or less critical environment. We measured the participants' tendency to cooperate with the robot as well as their perception of anthropomorphism, trust and credibility through questionnaires. We found that cooperation in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) follows the same rule of Human-Human Interaction (HHI), participants rewarded cooperation with cooperation, and punished selfishness with selfishness. We also discovered two specific robotic profiles capable of increasing cooperation, related to the payoff. A mute and non-interactive robot is preferred with a high payoff, while participants preferred a more human-behaving robot in conditions of low payoff. Taken together, these results suggest that proper cooperation in HRI is possible but is related to the complexity of the task

    The efficacy and safety of ipriflavone, a new anti-osteoporotic agent, has been evaluated in an open study in 100 osteoporotic women. Ipriflavone was administered as oral capsules dosed at 200 mg, 3 times a day for 12 months. Ninety women completed the study, and the results indicate that the bone mineral density was increased by 2% and 5.8% after 6 and 12 months, respectively. Pain and rachis mobility seemed to be positively influenced by ipriflavone. Only three women complained of side-effects (gastralgia and nausea) and asked to stop the therapy

    Numerous environmental factors such as smoking habits, alcohol intake, economic and social status, and by-product chlorination present in drinking water can determine adverse pregnancy outcomes like a low weight birth, small for gestational age or preterm delivery. In 1998 the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Technological Research (MURST) has financed a multicentric study in order to evaluate the association between exposure to by-products chlorination in drinking water during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes at birth such as preterm delivery and low birth weight. We describe the socio demographics characteristics, personal habits and the health status during pregnancy and exposure to the VOX of 171 women recruited from the Research Unit of Rome and L'Aquila. A case control study with incident cases was performed. Exposure to Chlorination By Products (CBP) and confounding factors for studied outcomes, were assessed by a validated questionnaire. At the same time, collection and analysis of 124 tap water samples were carried out directly at women's home. No association was found between CBPs level and low birth weight or preterm delivery. We found an excess risk statistically significantly between preterm delivery and hypertension (OR = 5.06; IC 95% = 1.70-15.44) an excess risk statistically significantly between low birth weight and smokers (OR = 3.43, IC 95% = 1.15-10.26). The CBPs levels were rather low (range cases = 0.09-6.28 microg/L; range controls = 0.01-6.44 microg/L). The results confirm the literature data and the validity of the epidemiological method adopted. The low CBPs levels, under the Law level, are probably imputable to the good quality of sorgive waters.
