    Packaging Film Impact on Food Organoleptic Properties: An Experimental Study

    Most packaged food products deteriorate in quality due to mass transfer phenomena such as moisture absorption, oxygen invasion, flavor loss, undesirable odor absorption and packaging material migration. An approach to increase the shelf life of the packaged food, while exploiting the advantages of flexible packaging, is to use flexible multi-layer polyethylene (PE)-based films including a barrier layer. This paper reviews different oxygen barrier layers used in Doy Pack flexible pouches for fruit puree and presents the impact of storage conditions on the organoleptic properties. In this study, the performances of five types of PE film pouched filled with fruit puree have been studied and compared. Regarding the organoleptic properties, this study focused on the 5 Hydroxy Methyl Furfural (HMF) increase, the L-Ascorbic Acid reduction, the brightness and the yellow color intensity decreases versus storage conditions. From those measurements, kinetic models of these organoleptic characteristics have been extracted and their relative behavior at longer shelf life have been calculated. Those results can be used as a reference by laminates process and development packaging engineers to support PE multi-layer film structure definition according to the targeted food application and shelf life conditions

    Static and dynamic factors in an information-based multi-asset artificial stock market

    3noAn information-based multi-asset artificial stock market characterized by different types of stocks and populated by heterogeneous agents is presented. In the market, agents trade risky assets in exchange for cash. Beside the amount of cash and of stocks owned, each agent is characterized by sentiments and agents share their sentiments by means of interactions that are determined by sparsely connected networks. A central market maker (clearing house mechanism) determines the price processes for each stock at the intersection of the demand and the supply curves. Single stock price processes exhibit volatility clustering and fat-tailed distribution of returns whereas multivariate price process exhibits both static and dynamic stylized facts, i.e., the presence of static factors and common trends. Static factors are studied making reference to the cross-correlation of returns of different stocks. The common trends are investigated considering the variance–covariance matrix of prices. Results point out that the probability distribution of eigenvalues of the cross-correlation matrix of returns shows the presence of sectors, similar to those observed on real empirical data. As regarding the dynamic factors, the variance–covariance matrix of prices point out a limited number of assets prices series that are independent integrated processes, in close agreement with the empirical evidence of asset price time series of real stock markets.     Bioactive sphene-based ceramic coatings on cpTi substrates for dental implants: An in vitro study

    Titanium implant surface modifications have been widely investigated to favor the process of osseointegration. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of sphene (CaTiSiO5) biocoating, on titanium substrates, on the in vitro osteogenic differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (hADSCs). Sphene bioceramic coatings were prepared using preceramic polymers and nano-sized active fillers and deposited by spray coating. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, surface roughness measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed. The chemical stability of the coatings in Tris-HCl solution was investigated. In vitro studies were performed by means of proliferation test of hADSCs seeded on coated and uncoated samples after 21 days. Methyl Thiazolyl-Tetrazolium (MTT) test and immunofluorescent staining with phalloidin confirmed the in vitro biocompatibility of both substrates. In vitro osteogenic differentiation of the cells was evaluated using Alizarin Red S staining and quantification assay and real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). When hADSCs were cultured in the presence of Osteogenic Differentiation Medium, a significantly higher accumulation of calcium deposits onto the sphene-coated surfaces than on uncoated controls was detected. Osteogenic differentiation on both samples was confirmed by PCR. The proposed coating seems to be promising for dental and orthopedic implants, in terms of composition and deposition technology

    Chronic kidney disease and urological disorders: systematic use of uroflowmetry in nephropathic patients

    Background. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a highly prevalent condition. Urologic disorders are known causes of CKD, but often remain undiagnosed and underestimated also for their insidious onset and slow progression. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of urological unrecognized diseases in CKD patients by uroflowmetry. Methods. We enrolled consecutive stable CKD outpatients. The patients carried out two questionnaires, the International Prostate Symptom Score and Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form, and they also underwent uroflowmetry, evaluating max flow rate (Qmax), voiding time and voided volume values. Results. A total of 83 patients (43 males, mean age of 59.8613.3 years) were enrolled. Our study showed 28 males and 10 females with a significant reduction of Qmax (P<0.001) while 21 females reported a significant increase of Qmax (P<0.001) with a prevalence of 49.5% of functional urological disease. Moreover, we showed a significant association between Qmax and creatinine (P¼0.013), estimated glomerular filtration rate (P¼0.029) and voiding volume (P¼0.05). We have not shown significant associations with age (P¼0.215), body mass index (P¼0.793), systolic blood pressure (P¼0.642) or diastolic blood pressure (P¼0.305). Moreover, Pearson’s chi-squared test showed a significant association between Qmax altered with CKD (v2 ¼1.885, P¼0.170) and recurrent infection (v2¼8.886, P¼0.012), while we have not shown an association with proteinuria (v2¼0.484, P¼0.785), diabetes (v2¼0.334, P¼0.563) or hypertension (v2¼1.885, P¼0.170).Conclusions. We showed an elevated prevalence of urological diseases in nephropathic patients; therefore, we suggest to include uroflowmetry in CKD patient assessment, considering the non-invasiveness, repeatability and low cost of examination. Uroflowmetry could be used to identify previously unrecognized urological diseases, which may prevent the onset of CKD or progression to end-stage renal disease and reduce the costs of management

    Can circumcision be avoided in adult male with phimosis? Results of the PhimoStopTM prospective trial

    Background: Circumcision as surgical treatment of adult phimosis is not devoid of complications. Efficacy of alternative non-surgical options is unclear. PhimoStop (TM) is a therapeutic protocol which involves the use of appropriately shaped silicone tuboids of increasing size to obtain a non-forced dilation of the prepuce. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and durability of results of PhimoStop (TM) device for the treatment of adult male phimosis.Methods: A prospective trial was conducted between 2018 and 2020 on 85 consecutive adult male patients affected by phimosis and with an indication for circumcision. Patients were treated with PhimoStop (TM) protocol and they were evaluated at baseline and after treatment through a subjective (patient self-reported information on various domains of his sexual function) and an objective assessment (evaluation of phimosis severity grade according to the Kikiros scale pre- and post-treatment, re-assessment of indication for circumcision post-treatment and validated questionnaires scores). Primary endpoint was to avoid the scheduled circumcision in 33% of the patients enrolled.Results: Seventy-one patients (84%) completed the device usage phase as per study protocol. Median duration of tuboid application was 60 days. Thirty-seven patients (52.1%) had no indication for circumcision after treatment. Even considering patients lost to follow-up as failures, primary endpoint was reached in 43.5% of cases. There was a significant reduction of the grade of phimosis after treatment (P&lt;0.001). Moreover IIEF-5 showed a statistically significant improvement after treatment (P&lt; 0.001). Thirty/37 patients who met the primary endpoint (81%) still have a successful resolution of their phimosis avoiding circumcision at a median follow-up of 24 months.Conclusions: PhimoStop (TM) device is effective for the treatment of adult male phimosis of Kikiros grade &lt; 2. The results seem to be durable in most patients at a median follow-up of 24 months. Randomized clinical trials are necessary in order to confirm our results and assess cost-efficacy

    SLUG: a new target of lymphoid enhancer factor-1 in human osteoblasts

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lymphoid Enhancer Factor-1 (Lef-1) is a member of a transcription factor family that acts as downstream mediator of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway which plays a critical role in osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. In a search for Lef-1 responsive genes in human osteoblasts, we focused on the transcriptional regulation of the SLUG, a zinc finger transcription factor belonging to the Snail family of developmental proteins. Although the role of SLUG in epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cell motility during embryogenesis is well documented, the functions of this factor in most normal adult human tissues are largely unknown. In this study we investigated SLUG expression in normal human osteoblasts and their mesenchymal precursors, and its possible correlation with Lef-1 and Wnt/β-catenin signalling.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The experiments were performed on normal human primary osteoblasts obtained from bone fragments, cultured in osteogenic conditions in presence of Lef-1 expression vector or GSK-3β inhibitor, SB216763. We demonstrated that the transcription factor SLUG is present in osteoblasts as well as in their mesenchymal precursors obtained from Wharton's Jelly of human umbilical cord and induced to osteoblastic differentiation. We found that SLUG is positively correlated with RUNX2 expression and deposition of mineralized matrix, and is regulated by Lef-1 and β-catenin. Consistently, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay, used to detect the direct Lef/Tcf factors that are responsible for the promoter activity of SLUG gene, demonstrated that Lef-1, TCF-1 and TCF4 are recruited to the SLUG gene promoter "<it>in vivo</it>".</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These studies provide, for the first time, the evidence that SLUG expression is correlated with osteogenic commitment, and is positively regulated by Lef-1 signal in normal human osteoblasts. These findings will help to further understand the regulation of the human SLUG gene and reveal the biological functions of SLUG in the context of bone tissue.</p

    Ab initio calculation of the β\beta decay spectrum of 6^6He

    We calculate the β\beta spectrum in the decay of 6^6He using Quantum Monte Carlo methods with nuclear interactions derived from chiral Effective Field Theory and consistent weak vector and axial currents. We work at second order in the multipole expansion, retaining terms suppressed by O(q2/mπ2)\mathcal O(q^2/m_\pi^2), where qq denotes low-energy scales such as the reaction's Q\mathcal Q-value or the electron energy, and mπm_\pi the pion mass. We go beyond the impulse approximation by including the effects of two-body vector and axial currents. We estimate the theoretical error on the spectrum by using four potential models in the Norfolk family of local two- and three-nucleon interactions, which have different cut-off, fit two-nucleon data up to different energies and use different observables to determine the couplings in the three-body force. We find the theoretical uncertainty on the β\beta spectrum, normalized by the total rate, to be well below the permille level, and to receive contributions of comparable size from first and second order corrections in the multipole expansion. We consider corrections to the β\beta decay spectrum induced by beyond-the-Standard Model charged-current interactions in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, with and without sterile neutrinos, and discuss the sensitivity of the next generation of experiments to these interactions

    In vitro evaluation of granules obtained from 3D sphene scaffolds and bovine bone grafts: chemical and biological assays

    Sphene is an innovative bone graft material. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the physicochemical and biological properties of Bio-Oss® (BO) and in-lab synthesized and processed sphene granules. BO granules of 1000-2000 μm (BO-L), 250-1000 μm (BO-S) and 100-200 μm (BO-p) for derived granules, and corresponding groups of sphene granules obtained from 3D printed blocks (SB-L, SB-S, SB-p) and foams (SF-L, SF-S and SF-p) were investigated. The following analyses were conducted: morphological analysis, specific surface area and porosity, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), cytotoxicity assay, Alizarin staining, bone-related gene expression, osteoblast migration and proliferation assays. All pulverized granules exhibited a similar morphology and SF-S resembled natural bone. Sphene-derived granules showed absence of micro- and mesopores and a low specific surface area. ICP-MS revealed a tendency for absorption of Ca and P for all BO samples, while sphene granules demonstrated a release of Ca. No cellular cytotoxicity was detected and osteoblastic phenotype in primary cells was observed, with significantly increased values for SF-L, SF-S, BO-L and BO-p. Further investigations are needed before clinical use can be considered
