Emerging Readers: A Look into Emergent Literacy Scores of Kindergarten Students Who Attended an Urban School District Pre-Kindergarten and Their Classmates
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pre-kindergarten on emergent literacy scores of children at an urban school. The need for the study was prompted by experts in early childhood about whether children that attended prekindergarten had an advantage over their peers that entered kindergarten without the prekindergarten experience.
Forty-seven kindergarten students who attend school in an, urban school district in upstate New York were the subjects in the study. Twenty-three of those students attended pre-kindergarten and twenty-four entered kindergartens without prekindergarten. The Emergent Literacy Survey was administered to all forty-seven subjects in September and November. The data were then analyzed to see if there was a significant difference between the two groups.
A test of the null hypothesis found that there was not a statistically significant difference between literacy scores of pre-kindergarten and traditional kindergarten students

A rapid ethnographic study of breastfeeding in the North and South of Italy
BACKGROUND: The past ten years have witnessed a rising trend in the prevalence and duration of breastfeeding in Italy, but breastfeeding rates increase in an unequal way; they are higher in the North of Italy than in the South. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences, expectations and beliefs of a sample of mothers, and to identify differences, if any, between the North and the South of Italy. METHODS: The study was conducted in two regions of Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia in the Northeast and Basilicata in the South. Two hundred and seventy-nine mothers of infants and children 6 to 23 months of age were interviewed using an 85-item questionnaire including closed and open questions on infant feeding experiences and beliefs, sources of information and support, reasons for intended and actual choices and practices, and some demographic and social variables. Face-to-face interviews were conducted between May 2001 and September 2002. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The distribution of the mothers by age, education, employment and parity did not differ from that of the general population of the two regions. The reported rates of initiation and duration of breastfeeding were also similar: 95% started breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding was 32% at three and 9% at six months, with 64% and 35% of any breastfeeding, respectively. Some differences were reported in the rates of full breastfeeding, reflecting different ages of introduction of non-nutritive fluids. These, as well as nutritive fluids – including infant formula – and complementary foods, were introduced far too early. Advice on infant feeding was generally provided by health professionals and often was not based on up-to-date recommendations. Mothers were generally aware of the advantages of breastfeeding, but at the same time reported problems that they were not able to solve alone or through social and health system support. Most mothers would welcome the support of a peer counsellor. More mothers in Basilicata than in Friuli Venezia Giulia reported difficulties with breastfeeding related to returning to work and were not familiar with their rights on breastfeeding and maternity leave. CONCLUSION: Programmes for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in these and similar regions of Italy should concentrate on better training of health professionals with regards to lactation management, communication, and counselling skills. The addition of trained peer counsellors could reinforce the work done by the health system and, through community involvement, could help change social prejudice in the mid- and long-term. The differences between regions should be taken into account in formulating these programmes to avoid increasing, and possibly to decrease, the current gaps

The doctrine of divine healing a training seminar for laity and church leaders in the Northeastern Section of the Southern New England Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God
This project challenged pastors and leadership staff members within the Northeastern Section of the Southern New England Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God to engage in an ongoing ministry of teaching with strong emphasis on the doctrine and history of divine healing. The objective was to equip church leaders and, in turn, their parishioners, to withstand the winds of erroneous teachings on healing as propagated by the Word of Faith evangelists. The biblical analysis (chapter 2) centered on four theological themes: sin, the atonement, faith, and grace. The section on the atonement included an exegetical (linguistic) review of Isaiah 53:4-5; 1 Peter 2:24; and Matthew 8:17. The historical-foundational aspect of divine healing in the Word of Faith Movement (chapter 3) included a review of the philosophical-metaphysical-theological teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, and Mary Baker Eddy. A review of the doctrine of Essex W. Kenyon provided an understanding of how metaphysics influenced the doctrine of divine healing in twentieth-century Pentecostalism. This project is a teaching tool for Pentecostal leaders in the local church; it assists them in refuting Kenyon and his followers' theology of healing. The project seminar executed for this study evaluated questionnaire responses of thirty-one attendees regarding their attitudes concerning and understanding of divine healing. On the whole, the project seminar was effective. It affirmed and validated the belief and feelings of the presenter that a need exists in Pentecostal churches to clarify the doctrine of divine healing

Identifying OSA Risk in the General Adult Primary Care Population
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to illustrate the need for the implementation of a novel screening tool for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the primary care setting. Background: OSA has been associated with numerous comorbidities including hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and stroke. Despite these associations, the condition continues to be widely underdiagnosed in the general adult population. Methods: Using the seven-step process outlined in the Knowledge to Action framework, a research translation project implementing the NAMES OSA screening tool in a community-based primary care setting was conducted. Implications: Implementation of a novel screening tool in the primary care setting consisting of patient history, symptoms and physical exam findings in the form of a paper questionnaire may increase the detection rate of OSA. Conclusions: The implementation of the NAMES2 assessment tool resulted in increased awareness of OSA risk presentation as evidenced by a 5% increase in OSA screening rates in the involved primary care practice site. Consequently, increased detection of OSA risk in the adult primary care setting can potentially increase treatment in those affected with this condition thereby decreasing the incidence of existing or developing comorbidities in this population.Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practione
